JFK Street Parklet Massachusetts College of Art and Design Spring 2015 Building Components & Details The goal of this project was to create a parklet, a small built seating area or green space accessible to the public which takes the place of a typical street parking space. I elected to situate my parklet in Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts in front of a used book store and bubble tea cafe which I often frequent. The design links two different types of seating groups - private and semi-private at street level (for patrons of the book store) and public with table space at a slightly raised plane (for patrons of the tea cafe).

House in the Woods Massachusetts College of Art and Design Fall 2015 Architectural Design IV The purpose of this studio project was to convert an abandoned grainery in the woods of Massachusetts into a residential home while maintaining the feeling of the original structure. My approach to this task was to design a house in which one could escape at times from the distractions of every day life to pursue personal projects in relative privacy in harmony with their natural surroundings.

Things Shaped in Passing: Kangerdlugssuaq Station

Massachusetts College of Art and Design

Fall 2015 - Spring 2016 Architecutral Degree Project I & II How do humans react, adapt, and tame the extreme environments of Earth? How can they both survive and thrive in such a setting?

My degree project at Massachusetts College of Art and Design focused on these questions.

After exploring several different avenues, I focused upon a research station and artist residency on the quickly shrinking Greenland ice shelf.

Site Plan Meters, oriented to North

8

Doppelgänger The relationship between man and the extreme environments which we have attempted to tame and understand mirrors the relationship between the arts and the sciences: different, but equal. In this way, I determined a research lab and artist residency is the most appropriate use for a station on the site.

Extremities To encourage interaction between both sides of the station, common elements in the center must be established

Elevation The building is clad in insulated metal paneling to keep the arctic at bay. Perforations in the paneling over the windows blocks the harsh glare that is caused by the ice and snow

Section The building is split between scientific and artistic functions by a communal lobby that allows observation and study above and below the ice. Additionally, the hydraulic feet that the building sits upon allows it to respond to seasonal changes in the elevation of the ice.

These sketches represent the original concept for my degree project at Massachusetts College of Art and design, from the ashes of which the final project grew. The original intent of the project still dealt with humanity surviving in extreme environments but specified that environment as outer space. The ideas of interaction between disparate groups in a confined space as well as those groups not being able to readily leave the building in which they reside were the most important concepts that were carried over to the final project and were permitted to germinate in an interesting way in the context of deep space. Although the site and scope of the project may have been ultimatly altered, the essence expressed in these sketches remained a vital driver for the remainder of the project.

Colombia Road Development Vanko Studio Architects Spring 2017

This project represents my favorite amongst the plethora of multi-family developments that I worked on as a designer at Vanko Studio Architects under and alongside the principal architect, Peter Vanko. The focus was a large new multi-family residential building along Colombia Road in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts with a strong theme of public integration and participation. My role in the project was as a participant in the initial design charette in addition to leading the process of the creation of schematic design drawings under the guidance of the principal architect, Peter Vanko.

13

Site The building bends back from the main thoroughfare of Colombia Road. This both adds a dynamism to the massing as well as lessens its impact as it engages the street.

Public & Private The main draw and conceptual “selling point of the building stems from the integration between public and private space. At each exterior deck level as well as the common upper roof deck, the public is encouraged to climb and utilize these common outdoor areas while still maintaining the privacy of the residential units within the building.

14

Experience At each common junction of the building, meaningful interaction between members of the public as well as building residents in promoted and encouraged.

High Street Development Vanko Studio Architects Fall 2018

Working alongside Peter Vanko and Sergio Afonso at VankoStudio Architects, we were tasked to fit a minimum of 60 residential units onto a site in south Dorchester on a street consiting primarily of triple decker dwellings. The challenge and focus of the project lay in designing comapct yet livable units as well as justifying the massing and appearance of the building in regards to its context. My role on the project consited of participating in the initial design charette as well as working on the creation of presentation drawings and documents to be shown to the client and the Boston Planning & Development Agency.

Meditation Cabin Personal Work Summer 2016, Summer-Fall 2018 The concept for this project grew from the brief for the previous House in the Woods project and was informed by two separate design competition briefs calling for hiking and mediation cabins. The commonality lay within the desire for a simplified space, accessible in nature by hikers that once could “escape to. Although it ultimatly was never submitted for review, it was an enjoyable set of problems to consider and work through.

The roof form, which most contributes towards defining the massing of the building is clad in dark corrugated metal and pierced by 6 skylights to give a clear view of the sky.

The Pantheon Massachusetts College of Art and Design Fall 2014 Iron Casting This sculpture project draws from my life long love of mythologies and toys to create a series of effigies depicting imagined deities. Each was sculpted from wax cast second-hand toy parts before being cast in iron and finished with an oil patina and stands about 12.
