The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations

8 Caring 4 You 15

Abbeyfield’s Diamond Jubilee

Caring 4 Gardens Sustainable Sussex

From the Editor Many of you will remember our commemorative edition of the Queen’s Jubilee in 2012, and maybe kept it as a souvenir. Now, to celebrate her 90th birthday, we’ve commissioned this lovely cover by local artist Sue Harding, which is a bit quirky and different, so could well be collectible in time if you hang on to your copy. This event has reminded me of the time I worked at Guy’s Hospital in London and Her Majesty visited to open the new wing. ‘The Towering Infirmary’ we cheekily nicknamed it. There was a buzz of excitement that morning – we were all dressed up and instructed to stand outside in good time to greet her entourage. I was one of the first to the front, and was pressed against the barriers as she

came by looking radiant and charismatic. I remember her giving me eye contact and smiling. Later as we dispersed and slowly dawdled back to work, I discovered two white gloss paint marks across the front of my new pale blue velvet top – my overzealous employers had painted the barriers just before her arrival! Well, in those days there were no thoughts of litigation – I remember sadly putting it in the bin that evening. It’s interesting that an event like an anniversary can evoke a memory from long ago and make you smile. Although I didn’t laugh at the time. We hope you enjoy the events listed in this issue, and don’t forget all our back copies are available online to view if you missed something helpful or of interest.

Banners, bouquets and Nicola Sheeran takes a look at the Queen’s official 90th birthday celebrations Our spring edition of Caring4Sussex looked back briefly through the 90 years since the Queen was born. With many events planned around the country for the Queen’s ‘official’ birthday, we will see how some areas of Sussex will be celebrating with Her Majesty. Readers will have seen the media coverage of the Queen enjoying the crowds in the glorious sunshine on her birthday walkabout in Windsor in April, collecting flowers and good wishes from the public – a large majority of whom had been waiting since the early

hours to catch a glimpse of her on her special day. The Queen celebrates two birthdays each year. She was born on 21st April 1926 and prefers to celebrate her birthday privately at Windsor. Her ‘official’ birthday falls on a Saturday in June. This isn’t a modern idea, but a custom dating back over 250 years to the reign of George II, who combined his official birthday with a military parade where all the regiments displayed their flags or colours. Since George II’s reign, all subsequent monarchs have chosen an

official date to mark their celebrations with Trooping the Colour. It is an occasion of pomp and ceremony as only the British can do, with the eyes of the world on London. As the United Kingdom’s longest serving monarch, what more excuse is needed to throw a huge birthday party for the Queen? In London, a series of events are planned – a service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral on 10th June, Trooping the Colour on 11th June and ‘The Patron’s Lunch’, a sit-down celebratory street party for 10,000 people along The Mall on 12th June, which will see London awash with banners and bunting. In Sussex, birthday celebrations began with the lighting of beacons along the coast in April. The sense of community spirit is clearly alive and well, with various organised public events planned. Here is a small selection in our sunny county. Villages within Chichester District Council have planned plenty of fun celebrations including street parties, community picnics and tea parties, village hog roasts and barn dances. In Plaistow (near Ifold, West Sussex) on the village green, the Parish Council has organised ‘A Right Royal Do’ – a vintage and royalthemed picnic event on Sunday 12th June from 2.30pm – 7.00pm. Haywards Heath Town Council will also be celebrating on 12th June with a family picnic at Beech Hurst Gardens between 12.00 noon and 4.00pm with some sportsthemed activities suitable for all ages.

The South of England Show at Ardingly, West Sussex, will be one of the largest events taking place in our region on the Queen’s birthday weekend on 9th, 10th and 11th June. There will be an ‘Ardingly Eye’ – a 32 metre high giant wheel, which promises spectacular views over the showground and surrounding countryside. On offer will be agriculture, equestrianism, country crafts and stalls, sports and leisure, as well as delicious food and drink. The event is organised by the South of England Agricultural Society, whose patron is Her Majesty the Queen. For something a little different, head to the Parish Church of the Holy Cross at Woodingdean. There is a Flower Festival from Friday 10th June to Sunday 12th June with the theme of the Celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday and life over 90 years. Throughout the festival, there will be refreshments served in the adjoining parish room. In Henfield, St Peter’s Church will be running a special exhibition throughout June celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday with key events in her life, and how Henfield has changed in ninety years. On Saturday 11th June there is a Family Fun Day and hog roast at The Royal Oak in Wineham, just outside Henfield, from 12.00 noon.

5

bunting Horam village near Heathfield in East Sussex is having a street party at the old station on 12th June at 2.00pm. Bring your own picnic – chairs and tables are provided – and there will be music from through the ages. If you fancy a bit of a ‘do’ near the coast, then look no further than Proms on the Lawn Big Band Party at Beach Green in Lancing on 12th June 1.00pm to 6.00pm, where ninety glorious years will be celebrated with the Tony Strudwick Band and the Worthing Silver Band, with fun for all the family including tombola, stalls, raffles and a children’s fancy dress competition. Shoreham is holding a Queen’s Lunch and Tea Party on Coronation Green on Sunday 12th June, where you can bring your own food, or buy from food-on-the-go providers. More details will be confirmed nearer the date, so check online or in the papers. On Sunday 12th June from 12.00pm – 5.00pm, Arundel is having a picnic in Arundel Park, and the invitation is for residents, friends and family to bring food and enjoy the afternoon. More details will be on Arundel town council’s website. The Tony Strudwick Big Band is helping Bognor celebrate on Saturday 11th June at the Regis Centre in Belmont Street. The Band will recreate well-loved songs from the past 90 years, from the Charleston through to Glen Miller and from Duke Ellington to the 60s, 70s, 80s and the present day. The event starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £12, concessions £11. In Worthing, there is a free Queen’s 90th birthday picnic in Steyne Gardens on 11th June from 12.00 noon until 3.00pm.

Bring your own picnic and blankets, and be entertained by ‘Circus Seen’ circus teaching skills, with live music, ice cream, coffee vans and free union jacks for the first 100 people to arrive. On 16th July in The Barn at The English Martyrs Church in Goring, there will be a celebration party from 7.30 to 10.30pm, with music provided by duo accordionists ‘Two in Accord’. Tickets are £10 and the price includes a buffet meal, glass of wine and fruit drinks. Eastbourne is having its Sunshine Carnival with the Queen’s 90th birthday as its theme on 11th June. A carnival procession will walk from Western Lawns to Princes Park between 3.00pm and 6.00pm – sure to be a flag waving extravaganza. There will be some road closures in place. Please check the local press nearer the big birthday weekend for further events and timings. If that is not enough to whet your appetite, David Cameron has announced that pub opening hours have been extended on 10th and 11th June until 1.00am, coinciding with England and Wales’ first games in the European football championships. Plenty of time to toast the Queen’s birthday and support the country’s football teams in your Sussex local! Hopefully, celebrations of the Queen’s 90th birthday, waving flags, putting up bunting, having parties will all be the start of a lovely summer in glorious Sussex, giving everyone the ‘feel-good’ factor. However you choose to celebrate Her Majesty’s birthday, be it a cream tea or a banquet, at Caring4Sussex we hope you all enjoy whatever you have planned. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of the Royal House of Windsor is a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who just happens to be our Queen.

Mindfulness How often do you lay in bed, unable to sleep, wrestling with your thoughts? Have you ever sat in the sunshine with a new book, unable to take in a word as you are plagued with worries about your ever expanding task list? If so you are not alone. According to the 2011 Great British Sleep Survey, more than 50% of us fail to get enough sleep. Figures published by the Office for National Statistics in 2013 showed that a fifth of adults in the UK suffer anxiety and depression, with the highest indication in the 50-54 age group. But in the fast paced society in which we live today, what can be done to help? There are a number of ways in which stress, anxiety and depression can be treated, but one increasingly popular way is through the practice of mindfulness. It’s a buzz word that you may have heard bandied about, but what exactly does it mean and how can it be used? Mindfulness is a way of living in the moment, of harnessing our ‘butterfly’ minds and truly being in the here and now. Research by Oxford University and a number of other institutions has found that it is a

an ancient way to peace and contentment

highly effective way of treating anxiety, stress and depression, tackling overwhelming thoughts and allowing us to find peace and contentment in today’s frantic world. It is an intentional, nonjudgemental awareness of experience which has been practised since ancient times in both East and West. A typical mindfulness meditation focuses full attention on the breath, so that you are fully aware as it flows in and out of your body. As you do so, thoughts and anxieties will arise in your mind, but when they do, you do not berate yourself for having these thoughts, but instead observe them and little by little allow them to go. This process allows you to understand that thoughts are fleeting – they come and go – and that you are not your thoughts. It also allows you to truly ‘be’ in the moment – leading to a more pleasurable and enjoyable life. It’s not so much about changing your experience – it’s more about noticing and accepting whatever arises. Claire Griffin, who runs weekly Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) courses

Care Networking Event Lancing Parish Hall, South Street, Lancing, West Sussex BN15 8AJ 14th June 2016. 1pm to 3.30pm. Free entry This event will be a good opportunity to explore a variety of activities that are available in the local area which are specifically designed to help those who suffer with dementia.

in Shoreham and mindfulness training sessions for organisations in Sussex says, “Practising mindfulness is more than just noticing things around us that we hadn’t noticed before (although this too can be a welcome benefit for people who are often too busy, too anxious or too distracted to notice many of the enjoyable things in life). It is about learning to become aware of the particular mode of mind which gets us stuck when applied to ourselves and our own stress. For many people, practising mindfulness helps to create a welcome shift in perspective and a new sense of calm in the midst of busyness and stress. It’s not about ‘tuning out’ on life – rather about ‘tuning in’ in a more skilful way.” There are numerous ways that you can learn the practice

of mindfulness. If you search on the internet, there are many practitioners throughout Sussex, or you could join a group where you can meet others who are benefiting from this practice. If you prefer to try it at home, there are CDs and books such as the best seller ‘Mindfulness – a practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world’ by Mark Williams and Danny Penman, available online and in good bookshops. If you want to read more about mindfulness in general, visit the Sussex Mindfulness Centre website at: www. sussexpartnership.nhs.uk/ mindfulness In the words of Rumi, a 13th century Persian poet, “Let go of your mind and then be mindful. Close your ears and listen!”

Friends of Sussex Hospices support St Wilfrid’s St Wilfrid’s Hospice is delighted to have been included by the charity Friends of Sussex Hospices in the support they give across West and East Sussex. This charity, run entirely by volunteers, has been raising funds for hospices across both counties for 21 years, and to date has distributed £1.5 million through their many and varied fundraising activities. Their work complements the hospices’ own fundraising initiatives needed to provide their vital services to the community. To celebrate their 21st anniversary, the Friends are planning an exciting new project to raise awareness of all the 12 hospices in the area. The Sussex Hospices Trail is a unique walking trail that links the hospice areas through some of the most beautiful countryside Sussex has to

offer. The Trail can be used for fundraising events or simply enjoyed by walkers on public footpaths and bridleways. More information can be found on the Charity’s website www.friendsofsussexhospices. org.uk and an App of the five footpaths already completed is available to download from the iFootpath website. There are two routes starting in Chichester, heading east through Barnham, then on to Arundel, and a third which loops to the north to Halnaker. Intrepid walkers are invited to download the App, walk the route and feed back to iFootpath any additional details, instructions and points of interest to help future walkers enjoy the route even more! Chichester Ship Canal passes through 4 miles of farmland from the Basin to Chichester Harbour at Birdham. It’s a very attractive stretch of water for rowing, canoeing, angling and walking. At the Basin, there’s Chichester Canal Centre which offers local residents and visitors refreshments, souvenirs, educational and tourist information and boat trips. This is one of the most beautiful locations in the city centre to relax and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. The cafe also offers hot and cold light refreshments, ice creams and confectionery. There’s ample indoor and outdoor seating, both with good views of the activities in the Basin. Adjacent to the cafe there’s a Visitor Centre located in a 19th century old stable which has been refurbished to provide information about the canal and its history. Boat trips also depart from the Basin. As well as scheduled daily trips, the boats are available for charter for social occasions including lunch, dinner and evening cruises. Passengers of all abilities are welcome and there is disabled access on both boats. Watch out for our Fish and Chip cruise, sailing Friday evenings and some Wednesday lunchtimes in the summer.

Maybridge Keystone Club needs volunteers

The Maybridge Keystone Club is thriving in the Maybridge community, with lots of great, fun loving, well behaved children. We now need more volunteers to help out because our usual supporters have grown up and left the nest. Have YOU got a few hours spare to help some young people? Maybridge Keystone Club invites enthusiastic, young at heart and active volunteers to help out on a Friday night between 5pm and 6.30 pm for the under 12s and/or 7pm – 9pm for our seniors. A new school holiday group is planned for August.

We have plenty of activities for the young people – sportbased, arts and even gardening as we hope to start our veggie patch for kids (of all ages) soon in partnership with Breathing Spaces and Oakgrove College. We are looking for friendly faces and people with a range of skills including IT, crafts, and environmental. Whatever your skills, we can help and support you to enjoy the company of young minds. If you are aged 16 to 18, you could use this volunteering towards a LIONS International Silver or Gold certificate which could help your CV and to get a job. Any volunteer post will be subject to the usual DBS checks. We also hoping to find Trustees to strengthen our Management Committee. We meet regularly every two months and it is not onerous or boring!

We are strong through our partnerships – help us to be stronger still.

Saved… again St Paul’s Church survives to begin a new era

To many Worthing residents, St. Paul’s is “that big stone church with the pillars”. Those who grew up in the town will also remember the joy of running up and down its well-worn steps. But now it has so much more to offer including a café with plenty of space to meet friends, hold a business meeting or grab a lunchtime snack. St. Paul’s was opened in 1812 as the Chapel of Ease, and

extended in 1893 when, due to restrictions of available land, it was turned the wrong way round, so that the altar was at the western end. It served as a parish church for another hundred years and was finally forced to close in 1996 as it was unsafe. The building was taken over by a board of trustees with the aim of turning it into a community space to include craft fairs, concerts and weddings. After major renovation, the doors opened to the public in Summer 2009 for social and community events. Towards the end of 2015, the venue was threatened with closure, but following huge public support

Aiming for Rio

and a new Board of Trustees, the future is looking bright. It is hoped the balcony seating area will one day be opened when funds allow for refurbishment. There’s always plenty going on, so look at the website for details www.stpaulsworthing.co.uk Photo © West Sussex County Council Library Service www.westsussexpast.org.uk Balcony photo (left) by Dan Thompson

Delicious Polish food in Worthing We explore the delights of Lavenda’s new menu When the Hairy Bikers declared Bigos and Pierogi to be their favourite Polish dishes, many of their viewers probably wanted to try them but weren’t brave enough to make them. Well now you don’t have to. Both are available at Lavenda. The Pierogi with duck, served with a duck and beetroot consomé is offered as a main course, and Bigos traditional sauerkraut, meat and polish sausage stew – can be either a starter or main. Adam tells us, “We’re introducing some new dishes including rabbit, with white wine and tarragon, and a traditional Polish recipe for goose with pumpkin purée, cider sauce and potato dumplings, created for a king.” “I’m also experimenting with flavoured vodka. We have twelve so far, including lavender and vanilla, but hope to have seventeen altogether.”

For a non-alcoholic drink, Frugo is refreshing and comes in red berry or green berry versions. We can thoroughly recommend the delicious Shepherd’s Pancake with pulled lamb. The herb-flavoured pancake is crisp and the filling rich and moreish. Even the bread offered with your meal is an adventure. The pumpkin, sunflower and linseed bread gives flavour and texture and can be eaten with butter or dripping. After a short holiday, Adam will open Lavenda for dinner only on Friday 10th June when the new garden eating area will be launched. From Saturday 11th it’s business as usual for lunch and dinner. Lavenda is at 28 High Street, Worthing. Phone 01903 366370, email info@lavenda-restaurant. co.uk The new menu can be found on www.lavenda-restaurant.co.uk

Everybody… have you heard? There’s so much to see at Mockingbird

So, what is it you want? An unusual gift, souvenir or antique? Maybe you’d like to buy some Sussex honey, jam or a piece of local artwork – and we mean genuine British art made by the artist in this country – and in particular – this county. It’s a unique collection of hand-crafted items produced by British crafts people, ranging from fused glass, wood turning, mosaics, pottery and ceramics to embroidered towels, stationery, soaps and wooden toys. You’ll find candles, soft furnishings and cosmetics produced from local beehives, water colours, painted glass, silk prints, pen and ink drawings, photography and even mixed media pieces.

There are antiques and vintage collectibles on display, art workshops, talks, creative writing and meditation classes. Take time to wander round and discover the huge range of beautiful and unusual items on offer and you might like a piece of cake and a cup of tea or coffee while you decide. There’s a real feeling here that they care about the people whose work adorns the shelves. A really welcome addition to the town.

Mockingbird Arts, Hand Crafted & Antiques Café is at 20-22 Brighton Road, Worthing, BN11 3ED (opposite the Fish Factory). email mockingbirdarts@outlook.com

Gardening for well-being with Sustainable Sussex

Volunteers at Field Place

Recent research has shown that gardening can significantly improve our mood and even help us through difficult periods in our life, through the combination of physical activity and the satisfaction of tending plants and watching them grow. One such organisation which actively promotes the value of gardening is volunteer-led community project Sustainable

Sussex, the brainchild of former Royal Air Force photographer Keith Collins. Operating out of Worthing Leisure Centre, the group carries out gardening, growing, DIY and other sustainable tasks at a variety of sites, working with local organisations such as The Community House and the Aldingbourne Trust. Sessions are people focused – more

Their hardworking, friendly and professional team are also decking and fencing installation experts. With over 15 years of landscaping experience,

than work or task focused – so things get done slowly while participants gain confidence and ownership of the project, learning skills at their own pace. Keith says, “We work with our founding partner, South Downs Leisure, to look after grounds, improve their systems and increase positive environmental impact. We have amazing support from local businesses like Pixel by Pixel who designed our new website and Wyevale Findon who donate waste plants. South Downs Leisure has been our biggest supporter – allowing us to use land, gardens, offices and outbuildings as the home of Sustainable Sussex.” Keith set up the group after suffering both mental and physical health issues, including chronic pain, after serving in the Royal Air Force.

He says, “I slowly came to the realisation that the problem was not my pain, but how I reacted to my pain. Sustainable Sussex was born out of the need to design my own workplace to suit my needs and to create opportunities for others.” Sustainable Sussex has recently launched a new group for over fifties and with physical limitations, aimed at encouraging people to get outside, make new friends and learn new skills. Volunteers will help to create miniature gardens for a planned working model eco-village, around the model railway at Field Place. So why not roll up your sleeves, get outdoors and help the local environment as well as improving your mental and physical well-being?

High fliers Julie Singleton discovers more about the beautiful peregrine falcon Photo courtesy of the RSPB, Carnyx and David Shaw Wildlife

Above Chichester’s magnificent 900-year-old cathedral, a powerfully built falcon can be seen scything through the skies. Reaching mind-blowing speeds of around 200mph (with the highest recorded speed of 242mph in 2005), it is the world’s fastest animal, catching prey on the wing with pinpoint accuracy. It is of course, the peregrine falcon. These spectacular birds of prey have chosen to nest

in one of the towers of the cathedral since 2001. Visitors across Sussex and beyond come every year to see the peregrine family grow and fledge from the tower, with HD footage beamed from the nest to the Cathedral’s Cloisters Café, where a special viewing area is being run by the RSPB. The original pair, who nested in the tower from 2001 to 2013, successfully raised fortyfive chicks – an admirable

ature N 4 Caring achievement compared to the average number of sixteen chicks in a peregrine’s lifespan. The male lost its territory in 2013 and then, in 2014, a new pair took up residence and have been there ever since. This year, all four chicks hatched on the same day – 26th April – something that hasn’t happened before. “It is really exciting to see the new pair raise four chicks,” says Mark Weston, Senior Events Officer for the RSPB’s South East Regional Office. “If this isn’t enough to keep them busy, they have also had to defend the nest against buzzards, red kites and other peregrines that have passed too close.” Live footage of the peregrines can be viewed on the RSPB website (http://www.rspb.org. uk/datewithnature/146937chichester-cathedral-peregrines) and many have been following the peregrine family story

online, with one father commenting, “Up until Saturday (23rd April) my son was obsessed with ‘Minecraft’ (a computer game). Since coming to your project he is now obsessed with the peregrines at Chichester and our laptop is now set up on the kitchen table so he can see what is going on. He will be delighted when he gets home from school to find that one of the eggs has just hatched!” The chicks fledge from six weeks old and the RSPB will be running its special viewing area until 10th July. Entry is free through the Cathedral’s Cloisters Café where you can combine peregrine viewing with a look around the Cathedral which also offers free entry, free guided tours and special trails for children. A true story of a little boy on a big quest By Toby Little Published by Michael Joseph Price £12.99 Hardcover: 320 pages

The ArdingTon hoTel

It really is jolly good!

ISBN-10: 071818338X ISBN-13: 978-0718183387 Over the years, we have featured many books by members of West Sussex Writers, some from new authors, others best-sellers. Alison Hawes has been writing educational books – children’s readers – for a number of years without due recognition. One of her stories, A Letter to New Zealand, inspired a small boy to write his own book. He set out to write a letter to every country in the world, so we wanted to encourage him by featuring his book on this page. “It is rare to get any feedback on my books,” says Alison, “and when I wrote A Letter to New Zealand, I didn’t for one second imagine what it might lead to.”

Among the photos are some taken for the BBC book of the series In The Country. Howard went to school and art college in Worthing going on to work in the film industry, but also dedicating his time to rare breed farming. Throughout his career he was also a professional photographer and has contributed to Caring 4 Sussex, though now resident in Dorset. www.howardjpayton.com

Toby tells us, “I did the project because I wanted to learn more about the world, and make the world a better place. If people know how other people live all over the world, then they can understand each other better, and they can be friends.” Mum, Sabine, adds, “It was really hard choosing the letters to go into the book, we tried to find a balance of continents, age of respondents, jobs, religions… each letter exchange has a little background story attached. We could have included so many more.” Perhaps there will be a second volume.

A subject close to my heart It’s Saturday afternoon at the checkout of your local supermarket. It’s busy. You are absentmindedly leafing through the pages of a magazine wondering what you’ll have for lunch. There’s a sudden gasp and a crash and you wheel round, dropping the magazine to see the portly gentleman who had been grumbling behind you clasp his fist to his chest and fall like a massive felled tree. As his head cracks on the floor, his mouth gapes like a goldfish in his red, then blue face. Then silence. What do you do? Because I’m nice, you won’t be required to do anything in this scenario. Yet. An off-duty doctor was in the queue next to yours, and an offduty paramedic in the queue next to that. Together they promptly recognise what has happened, start CPR and delegate roles for other bystanders and store employees. The superstore does have an AED (automated electronic defibrillator). By the time the ambulance arrives a few minutes later, the man’s heart is beating and he will soon be on his way to

hospital in the hands of an experienced crew. Now replay the scenario: No doctor or paramedic, no nurse or police officer, no firefighter or first-aider. Just you. Do you know how to do CPR? Do you want to be the weak link in the chain of survival? Of all the bees in the hive in my bonnet, this is one of the biggest. Possibly even the queen. There is undisputed evidence that early bystander CPR/ defibrillation impacts directly on survival of out of hospital cardiac arrests. Many countries ensure their citizens are trained in the Basic Life Support skills that could make all the difference. Most children in this country attend state funded education. Most adults hold a driving licence. Most adults work for an employer. How many opportunities do we need to miss over the course of an individual’s lifetime to teach these simple but essential skills? The Government doesn’t consider it is important enough – a fact I struggle to get my head around. Good quality CPR training is provided by various organisations. If you would like to feel more equipped to deal with a first aid
