Hilltopper Sports is on the Air! The West Liberty University television station, WLUTV-14, brings all the action of every West Liberty men’s basketball game to Hilltopper fans everywhere as part of the West Liberty Sports Network (WLSN). Executive Director Theresa Gretchen and Senior Producer Jared Thompson lead a talented crew of West Liberty University broadcasting students who consistently deliver professional-quality telecasts. Todd Ullom serves as the “Voice of the Hilltoppers.” The West Liberty Sports Network provides live coverage of virtually all Hilltopper football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball games throughout the year to more than 100,000 Xfinity cable subscribers in northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio on the WLUTV-14 cable channel. Several WLUTV-produced telecasts of Hilltopper sporting events have been shown on local NBC affiliate WTOV-TV9 in Steubenville, Ohio and beamed to more than 2 million cable homes on ROOT Sports-Pittsburgh (now AT&T SportsNet). WLUTV-14 has also produced numerous live local telecasts for the Wheeling Nailers professional hockey team, the ECHL affiliate of the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

THIS IS WEST LIBERTY ! West Liberty University (WLU), a public coeducational school and West Virginia’s oldest institution of higher education, is situated on 290 hilltop acres in a rural setting just an hour from Pittsburgh. A satellite campus located at The Highlands Shopping Complex sits adjacent to Interstate 70, minutes from the Pennsylvania and Ohio borders in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle. Established in 1837, more than 2,500 students are enrolled. Elementary education and secondary education are the most selected majors but WLU provides a wide spectrum of more than 70 academic majors in its five Colleges: the Gary E. West College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Arts and Communication, the College of Education, and the College of Sciences. West Liberty also offers numerous graduate programs in a variety of disciplines along with degree completion programs for nontraditional students. Students both commute and live in residence halls on campus. Among the more recent additions to the campus infrastructure is the Campbell Hall of Health Sciences. The 72,000 square-foot multi-story building united the university’s science and health care majors – Dental Hygiene, Physician Assistant Studies, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Speech Pathology/Audiology, and Chemistry – under one roof. There has always been a strong athletic tradition at West Liberty. The Hilltoppers’ men’s basketball team has been ranked No. 1 in the nation at some point in each of the last eight seasons and has made five NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearances, including a run to the 2014 national championship game. The WLU football program made history in 2009 and 2010 as the only NCAA Division II team ever to lead the nation in scoring and total offense in consecutive seasons. Grammy Award-winning country music singer-songwriter Brad Paisley is one of West Liberty’s many distinguished alumni. The University website is www.westliberty.edu, Twitter feed is wlumedia and Facebook account is www. facebook.com/westliberty.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

WLU SOFTBALL COMPLEX ASRC

(ACADEMIC, SPORTS AND RECREATION COMPLEX) The 145,000-square foot Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex has been praised as one of the nation’s top NCAA Division II multi-purpose athletic facilities since it opened its doors during the 2000-01 school year. The 1,200-seat arena is the home of West Liberty’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, wrestling and acrobatics & tumbling teams and has been selected to host multiple NCAA Division II regional championship events for wrestling and men’s basketball. With three Mondo surface basketball courts, a 160-meter indoor track, a well-equipped fitness center, a conference center, full athletic training facilities, administrative offices and numerous classrooms, the facility is a hub of campus activity throughout the year.

WEST FAMILY STADIUM Renamed in 2014 to honor the generosity of WLU alumni Gary and Flip West, a series of recent upgrades have turned West Liberty's football home into an NCAA Division II showcase. Recent additions include the installation of new grandstand seating and expanded press box which provides full radio/TV broadcast capability along with wireless internet service for all working media. Other recent improvements included an impressive new lighting system along with enhanced landscaping and design elements, all of which combine to make the 4,000-seat facility one of the top NCAA Division II stadiums in the region. The player-friendly MondoTurf playing surface, which hosted two NCAA Division II playoff games in 2009, is surrounded by a cushioned walking and jogging track used by students, faculty, staff and community members throughout the year.

WEST FAMILY ATHLETIC COMPLEX Fueled by a generous gift from WLU alumni Gary and Flip West, the newest addition to West Liberty's impressive athletic facilities lineup is nearing completion on the Hilltopper campus. The West Family Athletic Complex will be the state-of-the-art home for WLU’s men's and women's soccer, track and crosscountry squads. Featuring a player-friendly artificial turf soccer field with a full 8-lane all-weather track built to NCAA specifications, Phase One of the project is expected to be completed in time for competition during the 2018-19 academic year. The second phase of construction will add lights along with upgraded parking and access roads with the third and final phase providing a brand-new field house.

6

The WLU Softball Complex has been hailed as one of the premier NCAA Division II softball facilities in the region ever since its debut in the spring of 2010. Located adjacent to West Family Stadium, the softball complex is completely enclosed with fans afforded a great view of the action from the elevated bleachers. Other features include modern dugouts, a pro-style backstop, large electronic scoreboard, full-size dual batting cages and an independent irrigation system.

KOVALICK FIELD Honoring the memory of WLU Hall of Famer George Kovalick, Kovalick Field is home to one of the region’s most tradition-laden baseball programs. Situated in a natural amphitheater with raised bleacher seating, the stadium features a natural grass playing surface with a large electronic scoreboard located behind the fence in right-center field. Modern dugouts complete with safety railings and a new press box are recent additions, making Kovalick Field one of the MEC’s top baseball venues.

H. EDGAR MARTIN TENNIS COMPLEX Honoring the memory of legendary West Liberty coach and athletic director H. Edgar Martin, the Martin Tennis Complex has been recognized as one of the region’s premier college tennis facilities for years. The modern complex features eight regulation courts, all with a competition surface engineered to USTA standards. The Martin Tennis Complex is home to the Hilltoppers’ regionally-ranked men’s and women’s tennis teams and is also open for recreational play to students, faculty, staff and the public.

BELMONT SAVINGS BANK

INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY

Fueled by a generous lead gift from Belmont Savings Bank, ground was broken in August for a 14,400-square foot indoor practice facility adjacent to the WLU Softball Complex near Beta Hall. The vinyl-covered steel frame building is being manufactured and installed by ClearSpan, a leading fabric structure corporation headquartered in Connecticut. Measuring 120 x 120 feet, the heated and insulated facility will be completely covered by an artificial turf playing surface and will provide an upgraded practice experience for all WLU athletic teams throughout the year. The addition of the indoor practice facility benefits all students on campus as it allows the baseball and softball teams to remove their batting cages and equipment from the Blatnik Hall gym, freeing that facility up completely for intramural competition. The entire project was expected to be completed and the building fully operational by the end of October.

SECTION II: 2018-19 SEASON PREVIEW

SECTION II: 2018-19 SEASON PREVIEW

SEASON PREVIEW Everybody knew Ben Howlett had some big shoes to fill when the former West Liberty University standout replaced the highly-successful Jim Crutchfield at the Hilltopper helm a year ago. Apparently, Coach Howlett has some pretty big feet. West Liberty’s new coach didn’t miss a beat in his debut season with the perennial NCAA Division II powerhouse. Howlett was honored as the Mountain East Conference Coach of the Year after leading WLU to its eighth MEC championship in the past nine seasons, its 10th national scoring title in the last 13 years and a ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. While Howlett prefers to credit his players and staff for those accomplishments, he’s already turned his attention to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

“It was a learning experience on several levels but I was blessed to go through it with a great group of guys, most of whom I had the privilege of recruiting,” Howlett said. “I have five great seniors back and a lot of new faces so I can’t wait to get started.” Howlett must replace two starters as All-American Dan Monteroso is now playing professional ball in Europe while Australia native James Griffin transferred to Hawaii-Hilo in order to be closer to home for his final season. With three starters and several lettermen back, Howlett’s cupboard is far from bare but the returning player everyone wants to see didn’t play a single minute of basketball last season.

“If there’s one guy who personifies the West Liberty press, it’s Brady,” Howlett said. “He creates chaos out there and we love it. Eric is the best passing big guy I’ve been around. He had a great junior season and is primed for another big year. Evan and Tyler have played in a lot of big games and will see their roles increase along with Nate, who is ready to take that next step.” Behind the seniors are five players back for their second seasons at WLU. Two are returning starters in 6-4 guard Dalton Bolon and 5-11 guard Luke Dyer while 6-3 guard Keegan Saben and 6-5 forward Marlon Moore Jr. gained valuable experience. Will Yoakum, a 6-5 guard, developed in practice as a redshirt. Bolon made his mark at the national level, leading all NCAA Division II freshmen with 93 3FGs and ranking among the top five in scoring (16.7 ppg.). Dyer, a pass-first point guard, started all but one game and ranked among the top 15 nationally with a 2.97 Assist/Turnover Ratio while Saben and Moore each improved over the course of the season. Yoakum looks ready to contribute after adding 10 pounds of muscle during the off-season.

“Dalton had a great year and is coming off an incredible summer,” Howlett said. “He’s relentless and makes everybody around him better. Luke was really good, too. Assist/Turnover Ratio is a stat we really track so I know our team is in good hands when Luke’s on the floor. Keegan came on late and I look for him to play a bigger role this year. Marlon worked on his body this summer and is bigger and stronger. He will help us inside. I’m very excited about Will. We’ve had great luck with past redshirts and Will could fit that mold.” Five new faces – a trio of college transfers and two outstanding high school recruits – have joined the mix.

The most experienced player on last year’s roster, Brady Arnold was primed for a big senior season until he found himself facing a much more important challenge.

Ariel Watson is a 6-3 junior guard who earned NJCAA All-America honors at Garrett (Md.) College last year as one of the Top 20 junior college scorers in the nation.

The week before practice began, Arnold was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. An aggressive treatment plan proved successful and Arnold – now cancer-free – is back on the court but Howlett admits it was a tough pill for his team to swallow.

Nick Greely is a 6-7, 235-pound sophomore who saw limited action at NCAA Division I Campbell due to injury but was a first-team All-Stater at Bridgeport (W.Va.) High School.

“Losing Brady right before practice started and seeing what he was going through hit our team extremely hard and not just from a basketball standpoint,” Howlett said. “Seeing him back this year after beating cancer really gave us a lift. Brady picked up right where he left off in terms of leadership, keeping the guys accountable in the weight room and everything but forget basketball. It’s just great to have him back.” The 5-10 Arnold is one of the five seniors forming the leadership core for this year’s team. He’ll be joined by 6-5 forwards Eric Meininger and Tyler Primmer, 6-4 forward Evan French and 6-4 guard Nate Allen.

“I love both these guys,” Howlett said. “Yahel’s a really gifted competitive guard whose offensive and defensive game fits us to a T. He will be a serious guard for us. Jon played in a very strong league and worked really hard to get his body college-ready. Both of these guys could push for playing time as freshmen and that doesn’t happen very often here.”

Meininger started every game last season, averaging just under 10 points and 6 rebounds a night while Primmer was a key contributor off the bench, hitting double-figures 7 times. French, an NCAA Division II Academic All-American, is a deadly perimeter shooter who averaged 8.2 ppg. off the bench last year with 15 double-figure scoring games – including a 21-point night with 7 3FGs vs. W.Va. Wesleyan.

12

“Ariel is a serious scorer who can play multiple positions in the backcourt. He can really help us. Nick is a big-body post who gives us much-needed size and presence in the paint. Preston will learn our system and make everyone better in practice this year. We’re ecstatic to have him as part of our program and looking forward to seeing him in Black and Gold.” Howlett’s two freshman recruits are Jon Alessandro, a 6-7 forward from Beavercreek (Ohio) High School, and Yahel Hill, a 6-0 guard from Cleveland Heights (Ohio) High School.

Arnold has played in nearly 100 games, scoring more than 600 points and draining 92 3-point bombs but it’s his speed and tenacity in the vaunted WLU press that has made him a crowd favorite.

Arnold, Meininger, Primmer and French are all in their fifth year with the program. Allen just transferred to WLU last year but impressed with his athleticism as he grew more comfortable with the system.

Preston Boswell is a 6-2 junior guard who comes to the hilltop after scoring nearly 1,000 points in his first two seasons at Wheeling Jesuit. The All-MEC guard will have two years of eligibility at WLU after sitting out a transfer season this winter.

Howlett is quick to point out that coaching – especially at the NCAA Division II level – is anything but a one-man show.

"I'm very fortunate to be supported by an outstanding staff," Howlett said. "Dr. Aaron Huffman has been a huge part of our success for the last six years. A former head coach with a great basketball mind, I've leaned on his expertise so many times. BRADY ARNOLD

"I was excited to welcome Mike Lamberti back to the hilltop. Mike was with us for five years as a player and did a great job as a GA at Embry-Riddle (Fla.). When the assistant job came open over the summer, I knew Mike would do a great job and he has exceeded expectations since Day One."

THE COACHES

SECTION III: THE COACHES

HEAD COACH: BEN HOWLETT Heading into his second year as head coach of the West Liberty University men’s basketball team, Ben Howlett is coming off one of the most impressive debut seasons in the nation. The former Hilltopper standout was honored as the Mountain East Conference Coach of the Year after leading West Liberty to a 26-4 season that included its eighth conference championship in the past nine seasons and a ninth consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament berth. Howlett’s Hilltoppers led the nation in scoring for the 10th time in the last 13 seasons while also ranking No. 1 nationally in assists per game, turnover margin and assist/turnover ratio. His West Liberty team spent several weeks ranked No. 1 in the national coaches’ poll – the eighth straight year WLU has reached the No. 1 spot – while extending its NCAA Division II record of consecutive Top 25 rankings to 126 weeks. That success extended off the court, as well. Along with being honored as a first-team NCAA Division II All-American, Dan Monteroso was named the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Academic All-American of the Year. Evan French also earned Academic All-America honors – making West Liberty the only men’s basketball program in the nation with at least one Academic All-America selection in each of the past six seasons. The 31-year-old Howlett brought an incredible track record to the position when he became West Liberty’s 16th head basketball coach prior to the 2017-18 season. He had served as lead assistant coach under former head man Jim Crutchfield for the previous six years, helping lead the Hilltoppers to six NCAA Division II Tournaments, five Sweet 16s, four Elite Eights, two Final Fours and the 2014 national championship game. West Liberty averaged more than 30 wins a year (184-21, .898) during those six seasons as Howlett helped develop 9 first-team All-Conference selections, 4 Conference Players of the Year and 4 Atlantic Region Players of the Year. Alex Falk, Cedric Harris and Seger Bonifant were consensus first-team NCAA Division II All-Americans with Falk being named the 2013 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year and Bonifant earning back-to-back National Player of the Year honors in 2015 and 2016. Howlett was a standout guard on four consecutive 20-win teams under Crutchfield from 2005-09. He was the nation’s fourth-leading scorer (23.0 ppg.) as a senior and finished his career ranked among the school’s Top 15 alltime scorers with 1,663 career points while shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor. He stayed on campus as a student assistant for the 2009-10 season, helping guide WLU to a Top 10 national ranking and their first WVIAC championship in 50 years, before spending 2010-11 as an assistant coach at Ohio Valley University. Working primarily with the guards, Howlett helped OVU rank fourth in the 15-team WVIAC in assists before accepting Crutchfield’s offer to return to his alma mater as an assistant coach. A native of Marietta, Ohio, Howlett is single and resides in West Liberty.

SECTION III: THE COACHES

SECTION III: THE COACHES

ASSISTANT COACH: MIKE LAMBERTI Former West Liberty University standout Mike Lamberti returns to the Hilltopper bench as he embarks on his first season as an assistant coach with the Black and Gold. The Western Pennsylvania native spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., helping the Eagles complete a successful transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II affiliation. The 6-5 wing checked off a lot of boxes during his playing days on the hilltop. The four-year letterman played in 123 games from 2012-16, racking up more than 700 points and 400 rebounds while dishing out nearly 200 assists for his career. Lamberti’s versatility contributed to the team’s success as the highpowered Black and Gold won three national scoring titles and was ranked No. 1 in the nation at some point in each of his four seasons. West Liberty posted an eye-popping 123-14 record (.898) during Lamberti’s varsity career. The Hilltoppers won four straight conference championships, claimed a trio of NCAA Division II Atlantic Region crowns, played in three NCAA Division II Elite Eight national championship tournaments and came within a few minutes of winning the 2014 national title, falling by an 84-77 count to Central Missouri in the 2014 national championship game. The newest Hilltopper assistant matched his on-court success with some equally impressive academic accomplishments. He graduated from West Liberty with honors while carrying a double-major in Business Administration and Accounting. He also holds a master’s degree in the Science of Leadership from Embry-Riddle. Lamberti was a rare three-time All-Pennsylvania standout during his high school days at South Fayette High School. As a junior, Lamberti poured in a game-high 17 points in the 2010 Pennsylvania state championship game to lead South Fayette to a state title. The Lions made another deep tournament run during his senior campaign only to bow out in the state semifinals. Lamberti is the leading scorer in South Fayette history with more than 1,700 points and nearly 1,000 rebounds. A native of McDonald, Pa., Lamberti is single and resides in West Liberty.

ASSISTANT COACH: DR. AARON C. HUFFMAN A highly-successful head coach in his own right, Aaron Huffman brings nearly two decades of elite basketball coaching experience to the West Liberty men’s basketball staff for the eighth straight year. His primary duties with the WLU men focus on individual skill development along with game preparation, recruiting and academic counseling. Working with head coaches Ben Howlett and Jim Crutchfield, Huffman has helped guide West Liberty to six conference championships, five NCAA Division II “Sweet 16” berths, four NCAA Division II Atlantic Region titles, three league tournament crowns and a trip to the 2014 National Championship Game. The Hilltoppers have been the nation’s highest-scoring team throughout Huffman’s time on the sidelines and lead all NCAA Division II squads in wins and winning percentage – 210-25 (.894) – during that span. A 3-time PAC Coach of the Year as head men’s basketball coach at Bethany College from 2002-08, Huffman went 112-53 (.679) with the Bison, leading them to three PAC regular-season and tournament crowns along with a trio of NCAA Division III tournament bids and an ECAC tournament invitation. Huffman began his coaching career at West Liberty as a women’s basketball assistant under WLU Hall of Famer Lynn Ullom from 199901, helping the Lady Hilltoppers reel off back-to-back WVIAC regular season and tournament titles. He spent the 2001-02 season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with Hilltopper men’s coach Dan Petri before accepting the head coaching job at Bethany in 2002. Huffman rejoined Ullom with the WLU women’s team in 2008-09, helping the Lady Hilltoppers to three 20-win seasons and two NCAA Division II tournament bids before returning to the men’s side. An Associate Professor of Education (including Physical Education, Health Education, and Exercise Physiology) in the WLU College of Education, Huffman is a graduate of Waynesburg (Pa.) Central High School. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and a Mathematics minor. He earned his master’s in Athletic Coaching Education from WVU in 2000. Huffman went on to earn his doctorate in Higher Education Administration from WVU in 2013, minoring in Higher Education Technology and Physical Education Teacher Education. Huffman also has extensive administrative experience at the collegiate level. He served as West Liberty’s Director of Athletics for the 2015-16 academic year and was WLU’s NCAA Compliance Coordinator and Athletic Facilities Building Supervisor from 2000-02. He served two separate stints as NCAA Compliance Coordinator at Bethany from 2002-04 and was Bethany’s Summer Athletic Facilities Supervisor from 200308. Huffman is nationally licensed as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Huffman and his wife, Courtney, a Professor of Dental Hygiene at WLU, reside in West Liberty with their three children, Jacob, Jillian and Joshua.

SECTION V: 2017-18 REVIEW

SECTION V: 2017-18 REVIEW

HILLTOPPERS 'HIT THE WALL' - AGAIN! WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's basketball program “hit the wall” multiple times in the 2017-18 season. But in a good way. Over the summer, head coach Ben Howlett and assistant coach Mike Lamberti added four more NCAA Division II national statistical championship plaques to the impressive display on the wall facing the Hilltoppers' men's basketball office at the ASRC. Dating back to the 2008-09 campaign, West Liberty has now claimed a staggering 51 national statistical titles – by far the most of the 300-plus NCAA Division II men's basketball programs. The Black and Gold are well known for their scoring and 3-point field goal prowess – no NCAA Division II program has scored more points or made more 3-pointers over that span – but the Hilltoppers' dominance encompasses all facets of the game. Included alongside the numerous scoring and 3-point championships are multiple plaques denoting national season bests in Total Assists, Assists/Game, Total Steals, Steals/Game, Assist/Turnover Ratio, Turnover Margin and Free Throw Percentage. Don't forget about the victories. When the curtain dropped on the 2017-18 regular season, West Liberty had won more games (271), lost fewer games (27) and posted a higher winning percentage (271-27, .909) than any NCAA men's basketball program at any level during the current decade (2010-18). To put that in perspective, an NCAA Division II program that has never played more than 28 regular season games still managed to average more than 30 wins a season for the past nine years. Kansas and Kentucky were close behind at 270 and 269 wins, respectively, while Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) was West Liberty's closest NCAA Division II challenger but that’s a relative term. The Railsplitters ended the 2017-18 regular season with 247 wins in the decade. “A lot of the categories we rank highly in – scoring, assists, 3-pointers, shooting percentage, steals – are crucial to winning basketball games and that's what we've always been about at West Liberty,” Howlett said. “We've won a lot of statistical championships but we've also won a lot of basketball games. That's a tribute to the great players we've had here who have totally bought into the system.” That was certainly the case a year ago as Howlett was voted MEC Coach of the Year in his first season at the WLU helm after leading the Hilltoppers to their eighth conference title in the past nine years and a ninth consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament berth with a sparkling 26-4 record. West Liberty not only led the nation in scoring for the 10th time in the past 13 seasons, it finished the year ranked No. 1 nationally in assists per game, assist/turnover ratio and turnover margin. Last year's Hilltoppers also finished in the Top 5 in a dozen separate categories, ranging from scoring margin and 3-point field goals to rebounds per game, offensive rebounds per game, steals per game and total steals. It seems old habits are harder to break than old records.
