WORRY QUEST A prototype for a smartphone app that translates anxiety therapy and self-care techniques into fun adventure games.

App screenshots I designed an animated prototype that showed a user journey through the Worry Quest app. During the development process, I conducted extensive user research, including participatory research prompts and personal interviews.

The Exhibition The Worry Quest exhibition presented the prototype video in an immersive environment. Participants drew their own anxiety triggers, and viewed other fears hanging from the clouds.

The following are some explanatory graphics from my time at The Globe and Mail, the national newspaper of Canada.

The Deciding Votes I worked with editors and writers to determine that undecided voters were an important narrative in the 2012 U.S. election. We created five different voter personas based on our data and research. I delegated duties to team members, designed the layout & visualized all the data.

Mobile graphics I was chosen as the graphics director of The Globe’s mobilefirst design initiative. Throughout the day, we checked performance metrics for each mobile graphic to see what performed best on our website, and resonated with our users.

We adjusted our future plans and designs accordingly.

All About Fracking What experts say we don’t know: leaks from wells, the effects of natural gas leaking into groundwater and whether there are health risks associated with shale gas development.

Health, Science and Tech My areas of expertise (or “beats”) for making graphics were science, tech and health. I enjoy learning about heady topics to make them more accessible to the public.

MB mbambach.com is an entire overhaul of how I display my work online. I wanted to design it to be bright, airy and flexible enough to tell the story behind each of my projects.

Most people at Michigan State ride their bike on the sidewalk, which is illegal and dangerous. I set out to address this through user research and design thinking.

Interactive Data Explorer The map shown here is a visualization of a survey I conducted on campus that collected information about preferred methods of transportation and attitudes about bike safety. A microsite allowed users to explore my research and data.

Motion Graphics This animation outlines issues with safe cycling on the MSU campus.

Data Visualization I collected and mapped data sets to help define a problem and reveal any spatial patterns. In this map, I visualized accident data by intersection.

Hi-Fidelity Wireframe I designed a portal that allowed users to access my research, delivered via motion graphics, data visualization and brief written summaries.

A curator approached me with a wacky idea for a new museum—the Tiny Dinosaur Museum. The catch: these “dinos” are actually chickens. I set out to design the museum experience without giving away the silly secret.

The Facility The Tiny Dinosaur Museum is a community hub that hopes to educate residents about the economic, environmental and social benefits of tiny dinosaurs. It is located in the Midway neighborhood of East Baltimore.

An exhibit on MICA’s campus introduced the museum to everyday people. I included a variety of interactive, tactile experiences such as 3D-printed fossils, a real dino egg and a dino dig that puts visitors in the shoes of a scientist.

Lake to Lille How might we persuade everyday people to drink more tap water instead of expensive, wasteful bottled water?

Lille, France is a city full of underestimated treasures—including the remarkably pure municipal water. Lille’s water is a healthy, economic and sustainable choice, but many citizens distrust it and drink expensive, wasteful bottled water instead.

Our team set out to change the perception of Lille water by creating something exciting that builds trust in the water’s drinkability and celebrates its high quality. Our solution: a mobile, interactive exhibit that takes primary school students through the journey of tap water. It is contained in two trailers driven by a biodiesel-fueled truck that travels between schools. (above: takeaway poster)

Collection Children enter from the rear door of the truck, and walk through a “lake” filled with balls of various colors and sizes. Blue balls represent clean water, while others represent impurities found in unfiltered water. The water and its “impurities” are collected & carried into the next stage.

Filtration They pass through layers of transparent walls speckled with progressively smaller holes that represent different filtration processes.

The water balls of appropriate size are pushed through these holes; by the end, only the clean blue ones remain.

Delivery With clean water in hand, children enter this phase on a slide then race to quickly pump the “water” through pipes and into homes & businesses.

Water use Finally, they enter the kitchen of a home to see how water helps daily life. They discuss its importance to the body, community & the planet.

When I lived in Toronto, I regularly designed materials for my band’s tours. All of them were self-initiated passion projects.

Tour Posters For the poster on the left, I displayed the geographic shape of my band’s tour route as a constellation. The poster on the right is a fun visualization of our band’s ‘data’.

Hoarder to Order I used design to discover and assume an “alter ego� based on a blend of fiction & fact.

Video Sequences My alter ego was a hoarder who seeks salvation in culling, cleaning out and simplifying key areas of his life. These sequences trace a transformation from hoarder to order.

The Installation Each video looped on its own 46� screen. The sequences represent material consumption, digital distractions & obsessive thinking.

In fall 2015, I worked at the famous Globe Collection & Press, and was tasked with internal and external letterpress & screen printing projects.

Sun Ra Arkestra Poster Collaboration with Celebrated Summer Records, for the Sun Ra Arkestra concert at the Ottobar in Baltimore.

Sold in the record store and at the show.

Mini-posters Inspired by Globe’s work for the Baltimore Uprising. Handed out at MICA Graphic Design Type Nite 2015, hosted by Ellen Lupton.

Notebooks I designed, printed & assembled these books that were sold by Globe at the 2015 MICA Art Market. They sold out pretty quickly!

I teamed up with a local business (record store Flat, Black & Circular) to re-imagine the browsing experience in an iPad application.

App Prototype The final deliverable was an interactive prototype which shows specific moments of interaction as outlined by the user goals.
