In Physics a Phase Shift is defined as a measurable change in the wavelength of a sound wave, and is represented with a lower case greek letter phi. The musical intention of this short work is to represent this phenomenon. By begining with a simple repetitive theme, and offsetting it in pitch and rhythm from itself, altering the dergree to which notes alternate, adding more timbres and octaves via new organ stops and couplings, and adding in more voices, the theme is continually added to and changed. Akin to a sound wave being contunually played as its phase changes are played on top of it, this piece contunies to become more and more offset from itself until it reaches the point where it has returned to where it began and the simple melody returns.
Stops are to be programed into the organ prior to playing, and the appropriate changes are to occur right before the beat that they are indicated so that the change in sounds occur on the specified beat. M.B. Composed between 10/1 and 10/27/2014
