Kaze for solo Clarinet

Matthew A. Bardin Kaze Solo Clarinet 2021

Performance Notes: •

If possible, Kaze should be performed in a venue with a naturally long reverb. A three second or longer decay time on most sounds is ideal. Less reverberant spaces are acceptable, but not preferred.

Kaze can be performed on any clarinet desired by the performer. Potential recommended options are Bb Soprano, Eb Soprano, or Bb Bass.

All indicated tempos are approximate, but changes between tempos should be kept proportional. Don’t be afraid to take extra time between phrases.

Accidentals carry through the system, but not the octave.

Grace notes should occur before the beat.

Notation Guide: •

Crescendo from / Descrendo to as soft of a dynamic as physically possible by the performer.

Exaggerated vibrato over the duration indicated by the line.

Blow air sounds through the instrument with no pitch.

Transition between air sounds and pitch over the duration of the note.

Slap Tongue. If this technique is not possible, then as hard of an articulation as is physically possible by the performer.

Indicates a transition from one register to another (with the same fingering). The change from the first note to the second should be as smooth as possible, causing the second note to emerge from the first, rather than have a distinct beginning.

Glissando between the first and second note. The second note occurs on the beat. This effect should be primarily done with the fingers

Fermatas should be held for various durations based on their indicated length: o “Long”: 5 or more seconds o No mark: 3-4 seconds o “Short”: 2-3 seconds Any questions can be directed to the composer at matthewbardin.com

Program Note: Kaze is inspiration comes from two fronts: The first being the movement and lightness of a breeze. Kaze was also inspired by recordings of various Japanese Shinto chants; a few fragments of which are included in the musical material. When listening, the music should hopefully evoke a feeling of lightness and an almost playful energy as the line transitions between slower and more active sections, repeats, and twists upon itself; as if a breeze, or Kaze (かぜ) in Japanese, has begun to blow through the performance space.

This work is dedicated to the memory of one my first composition teachers, Dr. Sydney Hodkinson who passed away in January of 2021. It was thanks to encouragement, advice, and at times brutally honest feedback that I was able to continue on to where I am now and will help me to keep moving forward. Thanks Syd.

Kaze was premiered in the Spring of 2021 by Hali Alex at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA.
