Question Seven –

looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? Throughout the beginning of this course, I was heavily by driven by Narrative, I felt that it helps to 'make or break' a movie and I'm sure that these words have been used in the exact context before. When planning for our preliminary task, I felt that this was probably one of our most dominate elements throughout the entirety of the process. I felt that the idea of confining these two characters in an isolated environment just reached out to me! The relation between James and the Doctor was dependent on acting as well as camera work. I found that building a connection between these two characters that can be recognised (as in they have previously met before) would be ideal as it indicates that this is not the 'first' for James as he’s mental health has acted upon him before. The use of a third party which acted alone as a hidden antagonist was also a favourable moment within the film however, all of these elements I felt could have been executed to a higher standard as I feel that the use of the footage itself let the idea spiral downwards. Never the less, the group and I wanted to maintain this story and re imagine it in such a way that it adds a new layer of depth to the characters. Yet with the direction taken, we found that the we kept the character James and reintroduced him before he’s sanity was lost. We were in love with this idea however, there was a major continuity fail as a switch in actors was put in place. We also removed all dialogue to create more tension throughout the film. I personally felt that this was a step in the right direction as the consumers themselves can’t tell that the story was supposed to follow, instead it looks as though it’s a standalone film.

looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? In terms of camera work, there was a diverse amount of techniques used throughout or most recent footage. Compared to our preliminary task, we were kept somewhat confined due to the lack of room. Whereas when filming within our most recent setting, we had room to experiment with different shots which in return resulted in some interesting shots. However, when filming our previous film the enclosed area meant that creativity was scarce as there was not much room for experimentation. For the editing process, it’s clear to see that more effort went into our recent footage as the group and I where more engaged when re-visiting our work.

looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? For our character design, we felt that the ‘costumes’ used throughout our more recent film came across more relatable as well as portraying more relevance to the character themselves. It was clear to see what type of roles the actors where trying to achieve throughout the footage. It also helped to shape the stereotypes that we were trying to create which then lead to a greater ‘twists’ as the change in roles was unexpected when viewing the film. It also added some depth to the characters as we were able to gain some insight to what they are like just by the use of clothing. When comparing this to our preliminary task, it is clear that the same goal was in mind however, the costume design for ‘James’ didn’t exceed the expectorations that we were trying to achieve. It’s obvious when consumers are viewing the footage because the scenario that was being created meant that James’s ‘look’ was extremely out of place. The lighting was also a greater improvement when looking back between both films. It’s clear that the lighting scenario throughout the preliminary task was by far inadequate as it lacked in range. What I mean by this, is that when viewing the film, it’s clear to see that the condition of the lighting is somewhat poor and it doesn’t suit the overall mood that we were trying to portray. However, when comparing this to “Consumed” you can see that there is a larger amount of consideration gone into the use of lighting. This in return, helped to add emphasis on the overall mood and it also managed to create confusion as the use of lighting meant that we make both character roles look equally as bad as another by adjusting the lighting situation.

looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the as the use of clothing progression from it to the full product? When working as a group, the planning stage itself, had its own improvements compared to the preliminary task. It’s clear, that the planning was somewhat rushed when confiding I ideas for ‘the meeting’ The time scale itself meant that production was to some degree ‘sped up’ and in return the quality of the film dropped significantly. However, when conducting the research into our newest film, the group and I where more cooperative and the communication between tasks had been improved. This meant that ideas where fresh and the shared conversations between our group meant that combining ideas into one film resulted in a more intriguing plot. It almost meant that preparation for the filming itself was thought through whereas the preliminary task was slightly ‘rushed’ This then meat that the quality of the film was overall improved when comparing the two, as time wasn’t too much of an issue This of course has meant that I have investigated into different means for horror learning about the different techniques and sub genres within them. I have also found that the group and I have developed in skill when it comes to filming as we now have a better understanding of the different editing and filming techniques that help shape a Horror. This was then introduced into our own work meaning we had now used a variety of different shots, angles and techniques to portray tension throughout of product. This experimentation and investigation has meant I have more of an understanding of the different mediums throughout the Genre we have been studying. Also, my understanding of the different Macro and Micro techniques meant that they could be implemented in our own work thus making for a more overall improved horror movie.
