Rationale

We are providing eco-friendly clothes to the youth of our society and inculcating

to them the importance of sustainable apparel. Our materials help the environment by reducing harmful emissions and waste. As a major athletic company we have to expand our childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s line and acknowledge the sustainability of our environment. This is crucial to our survival and will help our company lead the way in our industry. Under Armour realizes the low profit margin that will be taken from EcoArmour Play but the importance of the line has a greater positive affect on our existing customers.

New Business Strategy Overview

As a new line we began to construct a new business strategy for further

execution of these new products. Generally, we will be offering eco-friendly, sustainable sportswear for girls and boys. Our targeted children will be ages 6-9 & 9-12, sizes 4-7 & 8-12 with the hope that these are the ages when children are not only running around the most but they are also getting involved in all sorts of different sports. Our unique selling proposition is that of selling eco-friendly childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s active wear, which is a extremely niche market but also a pretty wide market because there will always be children within this age range. Within the active wear our product mix will include shirts (t-shirts & base layers), pants (shorts & sweatpants), outerwear (windbreakers, hoodies, jackets & zip ups). These products will be moderately priced to coincide with the price points Under Armour already holds.

We will distribute this new line first in the Brick & Mortar store because we figure

that loyal Under Armour customers shop at their stores and are more likely to purchase from this new line for their children. These people are most likely active and somewhat concerned about the environment, especially if they spend time outside being active. Products will also be distributed in select national department/specialty stores such as Dicks Sporting Goods. Cities will be selected based upon their size and their environmental awareness based on completed research. This line will also be available on the Under Armour website to consumers who may not be in an area where the product is available but still may want to purchase it.

Tangible benefits for this new product line include quality, price, whickering and

dry fit within the products. Children will be able to have the luxury of Under Armour products but also be economically responsible. Intangible benefits include helping the environment, feeling a warm fuzzy feeling on the inside and also building a lifestyle from childhood.

We set company goals to have 50-75% of eco-materials and recycled materials

used. We would also like to use ways of construction and development to be ecofriendly as well.

Target Market Report

ECOArmour :Play is targeted toward eco minded parents and grandparents,

while the main focus is mothers and grandmothers. Women contribute to 80 percent of US spending (Continum), and women ages 55-59 are the leaders in environmentally friendly purchases (Older Demographics Biggest Users of Green Products ). We are immediately having an environmental impact with lower carbon dioxide output, while simultaneously supporting healthy behaviors and character traits that will continue throughout our children’s future (Tasmin Pesso). Consumers in our market agree that spending a little more for sustainably sound products is important and that teaching their children about the effects humans have on the environment is imperative. Buying eco friendly products, “teaches them to be responsible, respect and preserve (natural resources in) their environment,” - Catrina Henderson.

The direct competition to our line would be Nike and Patagonia. Both companies

share a sustainable product assortment, quality and pricing strategy. Although both companies have high brand recognition, neither offer sustainable products in their children active wear product assortment. Our products would not only be unique in the aspect of sustainable fibers, but in price, with lower prices than products sold by Patagonia. EcoArmour: Play also has the unique ability to fit within the high performance expectations of Under Armour.

With an increase in green initiatives, there is also an increase in sustainable

fibers for active wear. “Spending a little extra on fabrics like wool, bamboo and coconut is common place in the eco-minded younger generations. Companies are infusing fabrics with naturals like coconut shells, soy and aloe to keep (consumers) dry, comfortable” (Thera Gear ). Also the ability to recycle man made fibers such as polyester and spandex has created a larger ability to create sustainable active wear, which meets the consumer’s needs.

Sourcing

We will be using different manufacturers for our fabric, construction and

trimmings. Our fabrics will come from Milliken & Company and we will be using their innovative VisaEndurance fabric, which has moisture management, stain releasing, antimicrobial odor control, antimicrobial plus odor adsorption, and safe for the environment (Visa Endurance, 2012). The fabric will be sourced from a Milliken manufacturing plant in Brazil, Fab industries in New York and Teijin in Japan. The manufacturing plant we will be using is located in Colombia, where they produce woven and knit garments. The United States and Colombia has a trade agreement so all apparel shipments to the United States will be tariff free. We will source our zippers from a U.S. company called ideal fastener, which is located in the United States but the production of their eco zippers is made in Asia. The drawstrings and elastic is manufactured in the United States.

Patrick Lamson-Hall wrote an article in the Sourcing Journal in February of this

year that highlights the Colombia market, where we will be manufacturing the eco line. Lamson-Hall (2012) states that Colomiba â&#x20AC;&#x153;is a net importer of textiles and a net exporter of finished apparel. The textile and clothing sector accounted for 12% of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s manufacturing GDP in 2007 (the most recent statistic available), and over $2 billion in exports.â&#x20AC;?. Trade agreements, Duty and Quota for merchandise

In 2012 the U.S. Columbia Trade Promotion Agreement was passed and

allowed many products, especially apparel to be imported to the United States from Colombia for free (U.S. -C olumbia Trade Promotion Agreement, 2012). This trade agreement will help both the United States and Colombia economy by eliminating big percentages of tariffs and duty because both countries depend on each other for certain goods such as fruit for the United States and corn for Colombia (U.S. Colomiba Trade Agreement, 2012). Before the trade agreement was passed the rate was around 18%

There is also a stipulation that the textiles must be made and produced in the U.S. or Colombia for the tariff free rate unless it is unattainable in the country (U.S. Colomiba Trade Agreement, 2012; U.S. Colomiba Trade Agreement, 2012). Infrastructure of the target countries support plan?

The infrastructure of this country has a stable currency unlike some of the

neighboring countries. Lamson-Hall (2012) states that the Colombian “economy is diversified, and extremely macro economically stable, with a young and growing population. Even these currency difficulties are symptomatic of a trend that will eventually help lift the Colombian garment and apparel sector”.

The Economist wrote an article about Colombia in 2011 that was about their

roads the article described how the one downfall for the infrastructure of Colombia is their roads. This is because of the corruption of the country, although the president, Juan Manuel Santos’, “plans to increase infrastructure spending and reduce corruption”. In the same article it presents the fact, that “The World Economic Forum ranked Colombia’s infrastructure at 79 out of 139 countries. It mentions the cost of transporting goods from inland cities to ports can be more costly than shipping them halfway around the world from Colombian ports.” Work is already being done to improve this infrastructure problem. In Infrastructure Construction an article titled, Infrastructure focus was written in 2012 and there is the fact that,

In Colombia for example, the government has announced plans to invest US$

8.8 billion per year on infrastructure between 2014 and 2018. Representing about 3% of the country’s GDP, the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) hopes this will see the construction of some 1100 km of dual carriageway roads, 1000 km of railways and increase port capacity by 250 million tones per year.

Sourcing Are there portions of your plan that require investment or improvements?

Yes, the improvement can be made that Under Armour needs to join other

competitors in the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC). The mission of this organization as stated on the SAC (2012) official website is, “Through multi-stakeholder engagement, the Coalition seeks to lead the industry toward a shared vision of sustainability built upon a common approach for measuring and evaluating apparel and footwear product sustainability performance that will spotlight priorities for action and opportunities for technological innovation”. This will ensure the credibility and further strive to not harm the environment. Discuss how you plan to make sure sustainable production is being used.

Milliken is where we will be producing the majority of our fabric. This company

has a dedication to more sustainable fabrics. One of the fabrics we will be using is called Visa Endurance. Milliken (2012) states that the line has been approved by the FDA to be “human safe”. This line has also been under a study that explored the silver amount during a home wash and found that, “when VisaEndurance is laundered at home it does not pose a significant threat to the environment (About Us: Overview, 2012). Milliken (2012) also has a “global environmental policy” which was started in 1990. The goal of this policy is that Milliken wants to not only reduce “solid waste, hazardous wastes and emission” but to completely eliminate them. Milliken (2012) explains the update of their success that they “divert 99%” of the harmful substances “away from landfills and to places where it could be re-used or recycled”. From the official Milliken (2012) website is states that, “In addition, we actively seek and use alternative energy to power our manufacturing plants, such as methane gas produced by local landfills”. This company has even been awarded for their sustainability success by receiving the “coveted ISO 14001 certification — the highest global standard for environmental responsibility, the Malcom Baldridge Quality and TPM awards - as well as

Sourcing the European Quality Award, the British Quality Award and the Canadian Quality Award.” This company has a negative carbon dioxide release because what they release they get rid of because they create more forests, actually 130,000 acres (About Us: Overview, 2012).

Fab Industries, which is located in the United States lives up to EPA guidelines so they are not harming the environment. When they dye the fabric they are monitoring the water that is released from the manufacturing plant. Specifically, Fab Industries (2012) is praised for have a “scrubbing system” that gets rid of many pollutants that would be otherwise polluting out air. The company also ensures that the goods they use to produce the fabric is not on any “restricted substance list”.

Sourcing and is called Teijin. This company wants to “reduce waste and emissions of CO2, chemical substances, as well as managing waste more effectively” (Corporate Social Responsibility, 2012) They provided these great graphs that show Japan’s general decrease in pollutants compared to other countries. Other trimming and findings we are using that are eco friendly include our zippers. The company is Ideal Fastener Corporation and the line is called Ideal Earth (Sustainable Zippers, 2012). Lead times, shipping, quality, minimums and type of goods being produced

We have chosen the majority of our fabric, manufacturing and trimmings in close

proximity to be able to produce the garments quicker. This also cuts down on shipping costs especially the long lead times that come with producing in a far away country. Our fabric will come from the U.S. and Brazil, but is a U.S. company, with only a small part coming from Japan. The quality of using these American companies for our fabric is that it will be excellent and they have enforced sustainable policies. The zippers are coming from an American company but they are actually produced in Asia. The garments will be manufactured in Colombia so the distance from Colombia to the U.S. is a shorter distance, which will benefit the company by receiving finished product faster than the competitor. Marketing Plan Packaging

Eco-Armour has designed a logo specifically for this sub—brand under the Under

Armour parent company. It will be featured on the hangtags of garment, pricing tags and potentially a part of the design when deemed necessary. This logo comes in two different forms. One holds just the Under Armour Logo and an arrow in the form of an oval. This circle is specific to this brand communicating the sustainability of the line. It will also be the logo that is likely to be featured on any garments because it is truly recognizable but distinguishable. The second logo holds the line’s name “Eco-Armour Play,” allowing the customer to begin recognition that this is a sustainable brand within Under Armour. The fonts used are Helvetica and {skinny} jeans. Helvetica is certainly a recognizable font to the general public and those in marketing, as it is a font most people see many times a day and will not have a hard time adjusting looking at the logo. In addition, it is a font that is easily read. {Skinny} jeans is a decorative font that is both legible but playful. We chose to use it because it completes the logo and is effective in communicating the message to our customer. This line is for active children and it is also sustainable. Promotion

Our marketing strategy will be mostly towards the parents & grandparents but

subconsciously to the children. We will feature a series of commercials comparable to that of what Under Armour already does, featuring intense competition among athletes. We also plan on marketing by using the geo-tagging methods so that children can track where their garment was made and what it is made of. This will be featured as a tab on the Under Armour website as a way to bring more traffic to the site and also an interactive component for marketing this new product line. In addition to these forms of marketing press releases will be given to different media outlets such as WWD, blogs and any other source of media that our target market may encounter. EcoArmour will also have specific displays for the brick-and-mortor stores as well

as the specialty reatail stores that the line will be sold in. It will be a reccomendation to have girls and boys in separate sections as it already is, but there will also be a table whith signange. This signage will explain what EcoArmour is and on the table will be boys & girls hoodies. Below is a snapshot of what it may look like. There is a lot more room in this shot, the childrens will have less room and will be more concise for people to see everything.

EcoArmour “Early Bird” will be launched on January 15, 2013 and “It’s Getting

Green” will be launched on March 1, 2013. In addition to advertising on the companies website. We will be taking advantage of internet advertising beginning on Thanksgiving to make shoppers aware of something new coming. It will be available for pre-order via the Under Armour website on December 1st. Also released on Thanksgiving are the commercial campaigns for the line via youtube and tv. These will be on a heavy schedule before Christmas as well as after Christmas before the launch. After the launch the commercials will just be on a flighted schedule. We really want to take advantage of reaching the parents by scheduling advertisements around sporting events. The Super Bowl will be an time to advertise heavily as well as March Madness, for our second release date.

Upon the first launch, the geotagging feature will be available for kids to track

their garment, with parents permission of course, on the company website. All the while e-mails will have been sent as reminders to those that subscribe to Under Armours’s specials every week and a half to two weeks to let them know about purchasing the product.
