SUPERIORITY IN QUALITY Our goal is to get all the macro and micro nutrients (minerals) as high in the plant as possible in a short period of time. We do this while maintaining a proper mineral balance. If one mineral is much higher than another, there can be problems. For example, if nitrogen is out of balance (too high) compared to potassium and calcium in the plant, fire blight will be a problem. We monitor many other mineral levels and make adjustments based on our findings. Having plants that are not mineral deficient or unbalanced will help repel insects and disease organisms. A strong and healthy root system is also important because it is the root system that delivers the nutrients to the plant.

5

HOW DO WE ACHIEVE OUR GOAL?

We regularly perform a comprehensive soil audit that monitors all the macro and micro nutrients, pH, organic matter and type of soil. A water solubility test of the soil is performed which gives us insight into soil structure and availability of the major nutrients. These nutrients can be present but unavailable for many reasons. Earth worms, beneficial bacteria and fungi are the workers that take the fertilizer that is added to the soil and convert it into a form that the plant can use. They also protect the roots from soil born plant diseases like fusarium, pythium, phytophthora and even harmful nematodes. Once we know what is needed, fertilizer is applied in 4 stages as follows:

Our residue spray program on the soil feeds the beneficial soil microbes. We use a combination of molasses, liquid fish, Agri-Gro (bio-stimulant), organo liquid hume. A granular carbon is applied to increase organic matter and to add trace minerals. In doing so, it creates an environment to help support soil life and help hold onto applied fertilizers to prevent leaching. This fertilizer program is sustainable and prevents ground water and run-off contamination.

From the soil analysis, missing macro and micro nutrients are added, building up soil fertility.

A low salt drip irrigation fertilizer is also mixed with organic substances that help prevent leaching. This keeps the fertilizer in the root zone where it is needed and also reduces the amount needed because of efficiency. Roots do not like salt and most commercial fertilizers are laden with them.

A foliar fertilizer program is added to the pesticide applications to increase efficiency. Adding natural chelating agents in the fertilizer maximizes absorption plus it is beneficial to the soil and soil life as the over spray comes in contact with it. Drift becomes less of an issue and more of a benefit. Organic Gem Fish fertilizer as a foliar spray is full of macro and micro nutrients that the plant leaf can absorb and internalize, thus helping to strengthen the plants immune system. It’s entirely natural and safe. There are also beneficial micro-organism colonies that live in a plant’s canopy that help protect from leaf disease. Fish fertilizer supports this relationship by keeping the colonies healthy so they can perform their function.

Our whole program, is based on being as environmentally friendly as possible. It is geared to support life in the soil that is instrumental in producing a strong, healthy plant that has good energy in it that can carry on into a new environment until it is established.

WE ARE ABLE TO BRANCH ONE YEAR OLD TREES AS A RESULT OF OUR CAREFULLY DESIGNED CHEMICAL BRANCHING PROGRAM. THROUGH OUR FERTILIZATION PROGRAM, WE ARE ABLE TO ACHIEVE THESE SUPERIOR ROOTS.

GENEVA速 APPLE ROOTSTOCK The joint Cornell University and United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) Apple Rootstock Breeding and Evaluation Program develops new rootstock cultivars with an emphasis on productivity, yield efficiency, ease of nursery propagation, fire blight resistance, tolerance to extreme temperatures, resistance to the soil pathogens and tolerance to apple replant disorder.

In many trials in North America and other worldwide locations all of the released GENEVA® rootstocks have demonstrated a “per acre productivity” and “tree yield efficiency” similar or higher than current commercial standards M.9 and M.26.

HAROVIN SUNDOWN™

ROOTSTOCKS Bartlett Seedling Seedlings produce vigorous trees. Adaptable to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions. Susceptible to fire blight. Trees of Bartlett on Bartlett seedling rootstock moderately vigorous and strong.

OHxF 87 Proven to be the most precocious of rootstocks. Excellent early production imparts some early spurring and growth control with the Anjou variety. This enables a grower to plant slightly closer in the row than the OHxF 97 and Bartlett Seedlings.

OHxF 97 Similar in size to Bartlett seedling and has proven to be very productive, but gives no growth control. Liked for its early fruiting, its excellent vigour (especially for red pears and other less vigorous varieties) and its good anchorage. Responds well to limb manipulation.

HAROVIN SUNDOWN™ PEAR ORIGIN OF THE HAROVIN SUNDOWN™ PEAR This new pear, with its improved fruit quality and tolerance to fire blight, a major pear disease worldwide, provides growers with a later ripening pear that stores well. This will allow Canadian pear lovers to enjoy a great tasting local pear well past Christmas.

The Sundown Pear was born out of Agriculture Canada’s breeding program in Harrow, Ontario. It dates back to 1972 when a blight was annihilating pear crops and scientists were trying to create a pear that could resist bacterial disease. A Bartlett pear was crossed with a pear from a breeding program in the U.S. and the pear known as HW614 was discovered. With the help of The Vineland Research & Innovation Centre the sundown pear was selected out of more than 50 varieties because of its excellent consumer and agronomic traits. The pear is a delicious variety with light green skin, firm flesh and a unique sweetnes. First commercial planting went into Canadian soil in the Niagara Peninsula in the spring of 2010.
