THE COMPANY

The company

MateriaBrasil is a company focused in two main fields of expertise, design and consultancy. We are considered a reference centre in materials, systems, design, manufacturing processes and consumption with high levels of social environmental responsibility.

As a business, our main goals are: to spread valuable information about sustainability, to foster the values to a more sustainable economy, to provide responsible choices for professionals and users and to develop projects that generate positive impact.

With a multidisciplinary team that goes from engineers to biologists, from designers to economists we are able to achieve those goals working mainly with:

All the services listed above are guided through: innovative business and production models, networking teams (collaboration is the key to our company), search for continuous innovation and sustainable development.

The platform

In 2012 we launched our biggest project, our open source, collaborative and free material library. We now have the largest library of low social-environmental impact, responsible and high social impact materials, products and services available in Brazil. Believing in the open dissemination of knowledge to achieve the changes we want to see in the world, our main goal with this platform is to share all the information we have, help people make conscious, responsible choices and foster sustainable development in the country.

Through six sustainability drivers created by our experts team, we analyse each and every product available to the public, letting them know the impact caused by the material they are choosing. With that we believe people can make more conscious choices in their lives.

Besides the online information we are frequently doing exhibitions through out the country in which we have connected with more than 200.000 people.

The graphic we present with each material focus on the positive impact caused by that choice. Each axis of it represents one of the drivers and the level achieved depends on the actions taken by the supplier in each one of them.

How to use the booklet Hello dear partner!

Here is a quick presentation on how to use our material booklet.

With our work we aim to translate technical content provided by manufacturers into an easily understandable language, and to offer clear parameters so you can chose for yourself what sustainability aspects more relevant to your project.

Each material has a file. On the cover you find a photo of the material, the name of the manufacturer, its contacts and the commercial representative in the country (in this case France).

The transparent file contains a positive impact graphic, a brief

description, the material properties, usage and the drivers. By overlapping the files you can compare the positive impact smudge between two or more materials.

Knowing the most important elements of your project you can decide what material is more appropriate for you based on the shape of the smudge. If you want more information, on the right column you have the six drivers listed and what specific topics the material meets.

For example, maybe Material “A” has a smaller positive impact in energy terms than Material “B”. But Material “A” works with woman’s cooperative and for your project the most relevant aspect is to empower woman. So you will chose Material “A” instead of Material “B” because for that project it makes more sense.

We use binders when delivering a material booklet because you can just update it with new materials. So, if you have any new material that you want us to review please talk to us. Just email to contato@materiabrasil.net with the title [POC21_PARTICIPANT]MATERIAL_SUGGESTION and our team will analyze and generate one new file that you can print at home.

By the end of this booklet you will find all the technical and safety sheets provided by the manufacturers and used for assembling this booklet. For more specific information you can take a look up there.

We also have some blank pages and we encourage you to complete them with your comments and impressions regarding the usage of any material and you experience with the booklet. This way you can exchange information with your co-campers!

Moulded wood BOIS MOULEE Description Bois Moulee is a technical composite made out of wood and polyurethane, suitable for many applications. Areas of furnishings and packaging for which it is already widely used and indispensable , the molded wood is now moving into new areas where technical and aesthetic advantages allow the creation of new products. This technology allows the production of formed parts that integrate many functions. The molds are made ​​from CAD file , according to requirements.

These molds have a life span of about 250 000 pieces, if made out of steel XC 48..

Liquid wood ARBOFORM Description Mixing lignin with natural fibers (flax, hemp or other fiber plants) and some natural additive, Tecnaro produces a fiber composite that can be processed at raised temperatures and, just like a synthetic thermoplastic material, can be made into mouldings, plates or slabs on conventional plastic processing machines. So this allows products such as computer, television or mobile phone casings to be made from “wood”. These granules made from biorenewable materials are named ARBOFORM® (arbor, Latin = the tree).

ARBOFORM® is a high-quality thermoplastic engineering material for applications that demand high technological standards. It combines the positive properties of natural wood with the processing capabilities of thermoplastic materials.

Hybrid wood SELUN BIO-BASED HYBRID WOOD Description Selun is a 100%bio-based material made from 60% wood flour and 40% cellulose acetate, has a very natural appearance close to the timber.

It exhibits the same natural properties, warmth, elegance as wood. The thermoformability is its main advantage. In a spirit of sustainable development, it offers a greater freedom of creativity to wood furniture makers and interior designers. It is VOC-free, recyclable and biodegradable as wood.

The use of cellulose acetate which is a thermoplastic material, gives to SelunÂŽ its recyclability properties. The thermoformability that allows to transform boards (2D shape) into volumes (3D shape) by a simple heating and compression in a mould, is also obtained thanks to the thermoplasticity of cellulose acetate. As machinable as wood with conventional wood tools, the thermoforming allows a greater freedom in volume for designers.

Colored wood agglomerate VALCHROMAT Description Wood fiber panels bonded with synthetic resin and organic pigments, manufactures in Portugal from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certificated farming. Valchromat is available in several colors with excellent usage properties. Due to its differential composition and manufacturing process, the panel has higher density and mechanic properties than MDF, with higher flexibility and load resistance. As it is entirely colored, it is easily fished in case of damage.

Fiber FLAX FIBERS FOR COMPOSITES Description Procotex recycles both natural, synthetic and technical textile waste. 80% of the world’s production of scutched flax fibers are originated from Europe, and France is the world leader. As a 100% renewable raw material with low water and chemicals use during production, these sustainable fibres are also perfectly recyclable, biodegradable and compostable. Furthermore, they are at the same time exceptionally strong yet very lightweight. Flax fibre is characterised by high rigidity and vibration absorption and low density (1.4 p (g/cm³)) compared to glass fibre (2.54 p (g/cm³)) and other composite fibres. As thermal and acoustic isolator, it offers many ecological benefits and its impact on the environment is limited. Its low abrasion is also a strength not to be denied.

Applicability/Usage Can be used for lamination with thermorigid or thermoplastic polymers, same way as synthetic fibers ( Glass, Carbon, PP, Aramid, Acrylic) **The best mechanical properties in composites are achieved by using full uni-directional layers. So it’s not by applying yarns, fabrics or flax rovings. The mechanical properties of the uni-directional layers are high because of the absence of twist and shrinkage. A crossply laminate of UD layers of flax and a PP matrix offers rigidity of more than 10 GPa in a fibre volume fraction of 35%. In a composite, this has a strength of 130 MPa and a density of 1.05 g/cm³.

Pipes PPR PIPES Description Tubes produced with Polypropylene, uses less energy in its fabrication then PVC or metal pipes, and it is 100% recyclable. It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t releases harmful chemicals (non toxic material even in hot water) and the used process for conectors is fusion, so it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to weld, glue or anything making it easier and cleaner to recycle.

3D FILAMENT HIPS RECICLÉ Description Fiament made out of Recycled HIPS, the material is a recycled product from the 2D print industry : empty printer ink cartridges turned into filament processed originally in France (Bretagne) High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) is a great support material for ABS parts as it is very similar to ABS in its properties, but works with different solvents (Limonene for HIPS vs acetone for ABS). Experiments are ongoing for HIPS as a support material due to Limonene being biodegradable and produced from natural sources, not affecting ABS, and has a similar cost (vs double for PVA). HIPS can be easily torn from the ABS leaving an even finish behind.

Binder SECOIA EXP503 Description SECOIA EXP 503-C6 is an APEO (Alkylphenol ethoxylates) free, tall oil based, anionic aqueous dispersion of alkyd resin, modified with a controlled crosslinking technology. Around 95% of the composition is based on green renewable raw materials. It is an excellent binder for low VOC mat, sheen or satin applications.

Compared to conventional alkyd emulsions, hardness development is much faster and early tack after 24 hours is very low.

The processement for obtaining Oil from linseed, hemp and sunflower,are made with out heating.

We also try to focus on natural products which we can maximize the use of or are involved in ecosystem protection. Flaxseed oil produced, for example, comes from flax, whose seeds are often underutilized.

Hemp oil is produced on plots nearby streams: indeed hemp cultivation hardly requires inputs (fertilizers and plant health products) and therefore preserves water resources.

Finally, we exclude oil exploited at the expense of forests as palm oil.

This emulsion is labeled PURE controlled by Ecocert Greenlife.

Aluminium panels ALUCORE Description Honeycomb panel made out of aluminium 100% recyclable without prior separation or sorting (scrap value). Light weighted, very reflexive surface easy to process. In addition to its low weight and perfect flatness, ALUCOREÂŽ shows excellent weathering resistance. With regard to the surface finishing, high-quality lacquering systems with optimum resistance to weather and industrial pollution are used exclusively.

Schredder Mini shredder with housing

The machinery is assembled on demand in the UK and its structure is made out of steel and powder coated. Inside the housing is a fully assembled mini shredder with chamber size 61 x 120 mm.

The main goal of having one of this is the possibility of recycling plastic residue at home (ABS and PLA). For example, empty mil jugs can be shredded with this machinery and then used for filament making. The filaments can then be used for 3d printing.

This machinery also allows to shred different types of plastic that are currently being tested for filament making, such as PET, one of the most used plastics we have.

Filament struder Filastruder KIT

Manufacturer Filastruder http://www.filastruder.com online sales only Application Filastruder is a filament-making machine. The project was crowdfunded on Kickstarter where it had 875 backers.

How it works: Setting the desired temperature for extrusion and allowing time to warm up, fill the hopper with pellets and colorant of your choice, and turn on the gearmotor.

Nozzles and filament sizes: Undrilled, drilled for 1.75mm, and drilled for 3.0mm. Printers with nozzle size 0.5mm or smaller, it is recommended that a melt filter nozzle is used with the Filastruder.

ABS works really well in the Filastruder. PLA requires a little more care, you have to make sure to completely dry the polymer before extruding. PLA also needs a lot of cooling.

The Filastruder needs chunks of plastic that are no larger than 5mm on any side.

The more you heat cycle a polymer, the weaker it gets as each heat cycle breaks the polymer chains. You will want to mix in virgin material to maintain strength.

The main goal of having one of this is the possibility of recycling plastic residue at home (ABS and PLA). For example, empty mil jugs can be shredded with this machinery and then used for filament making. The filaments can then be used for 3d printing.

This machinery also allows to shred different types of plastic that are currently being tested for filament making, such as PET, one of the most used plastics we have.

Filament struder Filastruder KIT

Manufacturer Filastruder http://www.filastruder.com online sales only Application Filastruder is a filament-making machine. The project was crowdfunded on Kickstarter where it had 875 backers.

How it works: Setting the desired temperature for extrusion and allowing time to warm up, fill the hopper with pellets and colorant of your choice, and turn on the gearmotor.

Nozzles and filament sizes: Undrilled, drilled for 1.75mm, and drilled for 3.0mm. Printers with nozzle size 0.5mm or smaller, it is recommended that a melt filter nozzle is used with the Filastruder.

ABS works really well in the Filastruder. PLA requires a little more care, you have to make sure to completely dry the polymer before extruding. PLA also needs a lot of cooling.

The Filastruder needs chunks of plastic that are no larger than 5mm on any side.

The more you heat cycle a polymer, the weaker it gets as each heat cycle breaks the polymer chains. You will want to mix in virgin material to maintain strength.

Materials include MDF and plastic pieces, steel rods, motors, belts, pulleys and the electronic parts (arduino). The print head is adapted from the adhesive industry. The whole documentation necessary for assembling one yourself is available on the web.

MDF and Plastic Where more strength is needed I have used 15mm MDF but some parts are 12mm. The plastic parts are 10mm.
