Elana Weiss Hohl ?67 published her second book, Into theRevolution: Lettersfrom Iran, 1978-79,in October Her first book, AFew Minor Adjustments:Two Yearsin Afghanistan, a PeaceCorps Odyssey, published in 2021, two months before U S and European forces left the country, chronicled her two years as a Peace Corps volunteer with her husband, Michael, in 1971-1973 The memoir recounts how they negotiated life as newlyweds and as new teachers in an unfamiliar and foreign culture They were assigned to teach English in a boys? boarding school where Elana was the only woman on the staff. Life was challenging in this male-dominated society, but they managed to successfully fulfill their two year commitment. In her second book, Elana and Michael continue their odyssey in Iran in the fall of 1978, this time with three young children in tow. After they had resigned their state-side teaching jobs, leased their house, and given away their car to begin two years as English trainers for a subsidiary of Bell Helicopter International, news beginning to filter out of Iran suggested conflict in the country. However, their company (and the CIA) assured them that this was just a hiccup in a country familiar with strife and that all would soon return to normal After arrival in Esfahan, they set about finding a house to rent and turning it into a home for their family, learning their jobs and negotiating their new city As events intensified, they found their attempts at normalcy more and more difficult, until company officials strongly suggested that Elana return to the U S with the children, leaving Michael in country on single status. Back in Ohio, life wasn? t much simpler with no job and no place to live They were welcomed into Mike?s family home where his mother and and ten of his siblings still lived Communication into and out of Iran were cut off as the Shah attempted to hold onto power Elana?s letters home exposed a country on the verge of revolution. With events currently unfolding in Iran, the book is timely as a personal glimpse into the setting of a revolution Both books are available on Amazon, as paperbacks and as ebooks.
