SPORTS Highlights Wrestling The wrestling team finished as City, SIAC, Sectional and Regional Champions. They were Semi-State runner-up and sixth place in the IHSAA state finals. Sophomore Joe Lee won his first IHSAA championship at 145 lbs. with a 41-second fall in the finals. He was the 23rd MD wrestler to win a state title.

Junior Nick Lee was runner-up at 132 lbs., losing to four-time champion Chad Red, who was ranked #1 in the nation. This was Junior Nick Lee wrestling the #1-ranked wrestler in the naarguably the most tion, Chad Red, New Palestine High School, at the IHSAA hyped-up match in state tournament this year. IHSAA history, as Nick was ranked #4 in the nation. According to Mater Dei wrestling coach Greg Schaefer, “After missing most of the season due to an injury, Nick was able to make it back under the lights by advancing to the finals. He lost by a close 6-5 decision in one of the most anticipated matches in the history of Indiana high school wrestling.” Junior Kurtis Wilderman finished sixth at 195 lbs. and Kyle Luigs, Mitch Lehman and Austin Fleck were all state qualifiers. In addition, Mater Dei won their 40th consecutive wrestling sectional this past season.

Girls’ and Boys’ Track The Mater Dei girls’ track 4x400 relay team of freshman Vanessa VanBibber, sophomore Nichole Richmond, freshman Victoria Zigenfus and freshman Olivia Effinger broke the school record of 4:15.44 and set a new record of 4:15.31 earlier in the season. During the City meet, the 4x400 team of Vanessa VanBibber, Nicole Richmond, Victoria Zigenfus and Kristin East broke the new school record with a time of 4:10.79. The boys’ track 4x100 team of Chase Rheinlander, Clay Nosko, Tyler Effinger and Jared Strehl broke the school record with a time of 43.7 seconds.
The Mater Dei girls’ tennis team captured the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference (SIAC) title for the first time in school history in tennis.
