Note from Katie & Jane S E P T E M B E R 2014

W e hope you packed in your fair share of lake days and beach picnics because the lazy days of summer are coming to an end. While part of us will

mourn the finale of bikini season, we are not-so-secretly thrilled that fall is upon us. From Belgian loafers to fisherman sweaters, the comfy autumnal months may just be the highlight of our year. September isn't just about fashion, though. From decor styling tips to the best blooms of the season, our new issue has got you covered. In Charleston, South Carolina, we paid a visit to Lily Peterson of floral design studio, Flowershop. The young creative recently went into business with high hopes and has already far exceeded them. From floral crowns to table centerpieces, her colorful designs are the talk of Charleston. One glance at her bloom-filled boutique and it's easy to see why. Next we scooted uptown to visit interior designer, blogger, and TV personality Nicole Gibbons. We've been reading her lifestyle blog, So Haute, since before we can remember and jumped at the chance to see her gorgeous Harlem home in person. From her turquoise velvet sofa to her pair of leopard x-benches, we left suffering from a serious case of design envy. Be sure to check out Nicole's fall styling tips—they'll have you itching to give your own home a cozy September makeover.

Meanwhile in Manhattan's Gramercy neighborhood, Lauren Leonard of the fashion label Leona is settling in for fall. Her apartment's towering ceilings, well-stocked bar cart, and canine friends (We miss you, Pip and Conroy!) had our team oohing and aahing all afternoon. The Southern belle turned city slicker designed a fall collection of Matchbook dreams— burgundy and navy classics that are perfect for a stroll in Central Park.

Time to pull out your cable-knit! KATIE + JANE

10 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT . . .

Princess Diana PORTRAIT OF A L ADY

Royal fashion icon and children's activist, Princess Diana (1961–97) captured the hearts of her native England and the world. She married Prince Charles at age twenty, catapulting her into the international limelight. The often rocky marriage produced two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. After her divorce, Diana used her public recognition to advocate tirelessly on behalf of children, AIDS victims, and countries suffering from land mines. Her life was tragically cut short when she was killed in a car crash in Paris. She was only thirty-six years old. Read on for some lesser known facts about the People's Princess.

million people worldwide) was handmade with ivory silk, pure taffeta, and antique lace. It had more than 10,000 mother-of-pearl sequins and pearls and included a twentyfive-foot-long train.

Upon learning of young Prince 5 William's crush on supermodel Cindy Crawford, Diana invited the supermodel to tea at Buckingham Palace.

Before he married Diana, Prince 8 Charles had dated her older sister, Sarah Spencer. It was through Sarah that the two were introduced.

Diana came from a musical fam9 ily—her grandmother was a concert pianist—and loved to play the piano. During a royal tour of Australia, she sat and played some bars of Rachmaninoff for her hosts.

Diana, Princess of Wales, was 10 buried holding rosary beads given to her by Mother Teresa. Her grave is on an island in a lake at her family's estate, Althorp. Leading to the lake are thirty-six oak trees, symbolizing each year of her life. matchbook

Fall Styling Tips Spanx founder Sara Blakely knows how to make women look and feel their best. Since launching her wonder-working shapewear collection in 2000 she has gone on to become the world's youngest self-made female billionaire. In 2006 she launched the Sara Blakely Foundation to help women through education and entrepreneurial training -- giving back in true Matchbook girl style. We chatted with the successful entrepreneur to get the scoop on feeling confident and fashionable this fall. How do you describe your style and fall wardrobe? My style is feminine and funky, even in a business setting. I gravitate towards fun, eclectic accessories, whether it’s a chunky ring or brightly colored hat. My fall wardrobe is filled with pieces that are both comfortable and cool. But, regardless of the outfit, I have my Spanx on underneath! 24

1.

We launched Spanx jeans this season and I wear both The Signature and The SlimX®styles all the time. When I’m running around chasing my kids, I pair them with a t-shirt and Converses—comfort is key! For the office, I wear them with a brightly colored little sweater and heels.

2.

Dress for your shape! As I get older, formfitting dresses aren’t working for me like they used to. When the occasion calls for a dress, I’ll wear a fit-and-flare style with our Spanx Tight-End Tights™. We have so many fun patterns to choose from, not to mention they have tummy-taming control!

26

3.

For me, it’s all about booties this fall, and for once I’m not talking about the tush! The Isabel Marant “Crisi” boots are my favorite. I love the hidden wedge!

4.

I like color and prints. I’m drawn to embellished cashmere sweaters and anything with a bold graphic. Underneath it all, I wear my Spanx Brallelujah!® bra. It’s perfect for banishing the lumps and bumps that show when wearing sweaters.

5.

Confidence is what pulls your look together. You can’t take yourself too seriously, fashion should be fun and I recommend you mix it up! I once wore a candy necklace with a Dolce & Gabbana evening to the SAG awards. matchbook

When did you first fall for fashion?

Some of my earliest memories are of clothing—a peach silk jumpsuit my mom wore in the’80s, a Breton-inspired striped boatneck tee and matching skirt I wore on my first day of grade school, the list goes on and on. Very early on, I was drawing clothing on anything I could get my hands on. How would you describe your personal style?

On a good day, Southern fem meets city chic. In the studio, I need to be basic, so I am usually in a white tee, distressed boyfriend jeans and flats while working. What did you enjoy about being a womenswear buyer?

Studying the customer is always so fascinating. I love to discover what people are drawn to and what drives them to purchase. What inspired you to launch your own collection?

I am an entrepreneur at heart. Working creatively and creating beautiful things, whether it’s clothing, artwork, spaces, or textiles, that’s 72
