New Members

In this issue the Morgan family give us a brief background on their 40 years in the painting industry; we get some tips from Oldfields on how to look after our scaffolding, Haymes highlight their new product, and CoINVEST remind us all about compulsory long service leave for our trade. We hope this gives you a taste of what’s going on in our industry alongside our monthly e newsletters. The Trade News and Painters Pipeline also aims to become a platform for emerging voices, and to spread the word about the huge diversity of painting practice alive today. If you have any ideas on what topics you would like to see in our magazine or e-newsletter, please drop us an email. The Team at MPA

Group and will be represented on this working group by our CEO. As my term as President comes to end this year I would like to thank you all for your support and to my fellow board directors and staff at the MPA thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your president of this wonderful association. Brilliant Group shines on all renovation projects with these products & much more!

The 5 year strategic plan for the association that was adopted in 2010 will be reviewed by the board of directors after our AGM and I look forward to working with the new board to implement this plan. We do have concerns of the direction that some organisations are heading with training in our industry and that the training that is being provided will not meet the expectations of our industry especially in the Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) system. I am very pleased to see the growth in training for members and non-members especially in Costing and Estimating, Sustainable Painting Practices and Lead Management. It is important that all members continue up skill there employees. The Master Painters Australia has been invited to participate in the Waste Paint Implementation Working

Morgan Family celebrates 40th year THE MORGAN FAMILY OPERATES THREE PAINT SPOT STORES JOINTLY OWNED BY BARRY, HIS TWO BROTHERS RUSSELL & KEN AND SISTER DIANNE. THEIR PAINT INDUSTRY HISTORY IS NOW IN ITS 40TH YEAR WITH THEIR FATHER OPENING THE FIRST STORE BACK IN 1973. Barry said, “We also have two of our sons involved, so a third generation has started getting involved in the family business.” From a business perspective, Barry says that the paint business has put them in good stead. Barry said, “From feedback forms, both customers and suppliers said that they like and appreciate our integrity and honesty. We’ve always lived by the rule, ‘treat others as you’d like to be treated.’ It’s how we operate and it works very well for us.” The Morgans are still actively growing their customer-base within their three locations of Moorabbin, Knox and Carrum Downs. Barry added, “We have a good share of the market in each of our locations. Our focus is to continue to offer our retail and trade customers the widest selection of products and great customer service at the right price”.

THANKS FROM THE MPA MPA THANKS THE MORGAN FAMILY FOR THEIR SUPPORT OVER THE LAST FORTY YEARS TO THE INDUSTRY AND LOOK FORWARD TO THEIR ONGOING SUPPORT OF OUR TRADE IN THE FUTURE.

CEO Report WASTE PAINT STEWARDSHIP The MPA has been invited to participate with other industry representatives in helping to develop a model to minimize and reuse trade paint waste in the painting industry In April 2013 the Council of Australian Governments Standing Council on Environment and Water agreed to place waste architectural and decorative paint on the national work plan under the National Waste Policy. Waste paint and paint containers can contain hazardous waste and represents a significant and increasing cost for local household hazardous waste programs funded by state and local governments. The waste paint stewardship needs to be supported by all participants in the painting industry to remove paint waste in Australia. The recent Paint Care trial held in Victoria was very successful in helping to remove trade paint waste and was strongly supported by paint manufacturers and painting contractors. Sustainability Victoria and the Australian Paint Manufacturers Federation will once again be the driving force behind the national rollout and we look forward to the implementation of this programme which will assist in cleaning up our environment .

2013 SPRING EDITION

Tasmanian Report MPA in conjunction with Valspar are holding a Trade Night in Launceston on Thursday 21st November at 5.00pm onwards. This event is open to all in the building trade, especially painters and decorators. Worksafe Tasmania will be there to talk about new changes to work place safety requirements. It is becoming more evident that the consumers in Tasmania are becoming far more educated re the presence and requirements concerning Lead Paint Removal and the effects of Lead Paint as a health issue. Recently I had a meeting with Work Place Standards and I would advise all members that are not accredited in Lead Paint Removal and asbestos management to undertake the course as a matter of due diligence to your consumers and to your employees as the understanding from an WHS issue that a hard line will be taken where painters are not removing lead paint on properties built prior to 1970 using the safest methods possible. Safe work method statements (SWMS) will be required by them also when undertaking site inspections. Also I would suggest that all members

ring their insurance companies and find out if they are insured for paint removal using any form of heat. Take a look at LEAD ALERT - Six step guide to painting your home which is available online at www.environment .gov.au and take special note of page 34. Your current method for paint removal may make you consider the above information in a different light. The days of burning off with gas flame in particular may not be suitable for you to undertake as the Safest Method Possible. IF YOU WISH TO BE PROPERLY ACCREDITED IN LEAD PAINT REMOVAL CONTACT THE MPA OFFICE ON 1800 337 510 TO ENROL IN THE COURSE – IMPLEMENT SAFE LEAD PAINT & ASBESTOS WORK PRACTICES IN THE PAINTING INDUSTRY. CPCCPD3031A Looking forward to seeing as many as possible at our next function in Launceston as the MPA has encouraged some very interesting guests to be present. CHEERS BOB DE GROOT

Long Service Leave for Painters COINVEST IS A PUBLIC COMPANY THAT ADMINISTERS VICTORIA’S COMPULSORY LONG SERVICE LEAVE SCHEME FOR THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY. The Portable Long Service Leave Scheme was established to overcome the problem of few employees in the sector receiving long service leave because of the short-term, project-based nature of their work. Rather than each employer paying their worker’s long service leave entitlements separately, it made sense to have one central fund. Worker’s entitlements are based on their recorded service in the construction industry regardless of how many employers they have worked for. Workers are entitled to long service leave after accruing seven years of active service in the industry. Since CoINVEST’s inception in 1976, the scheme has paid more than $750 million in long service leave claims in Victoria. As at 30 June 2013, more than 177,000 active worker and apprentices, 16,100 employers and 24,000 working sub-contractors were registered. CoINVEST is managed and operated by construction industry representatives, with an elected board. WORK COVERED BY THE SCHEME A construction worker is defined as a person who is directly employed to perform work within the construction industry, including trades people, foremen, labourers and apprentices. It excludes supervisors, managers and office

page 6

workers or those not working “on the tools”. Painters have been covered by the scheme since CoINVEST’s inception, thus recorded service for painters begins from the start date of the painter’s first employer as early as 21 December 1973. The scheme covers workers employed on commercial/industrial projects and small domestic projects such as home extensions or renovations. Self-employed workers are also covered by CoINVEST, whether as a working subcontractor or a working director. Working subcontractors continue accruing service by making their own contributions to CoINVEST. Working directors, on behalf of their company, will provide details about their own work to CoINVEST. TRACKING A WORKER’S EMPLOYMENT HISTORY All construction industry employers are required to provide CoINVEST with details of their eligible construction workers every three months. Employers pay a contribution on a worker’s ordinary rate of pay based on the number of days worked. When taking long service leave, a wage is paid for by CoINVEST rather than the employer. INTERSTATE WORK Long service leave is portable between States and Territories in Australia. The interstate reciprocal agreement means that if workers are employed interstate, their time in the industry can still be counted towards their long service leave. They must, however, notify and register with the relevant long service leave scheme in each State/Territory. When a worker wishes to apply for long service leave and has service credits in two or more States/Territories, they simply apply for leave in the State/Territory in which they are currently working. To find out more about long service leave in the Victorian construction industry, contact CoINVEST by phoning 1300 COINVEST or visit www.coinvest.com.au

NU EcoSafe Strip OVERVIEW The chemical paint and coating strippers that have been produced over the years can only be described as harmful to both the environment and to the general health and safety of workers. Government regulations are now forcing all users to seek less harmful alternatives to the harsh and toxic chemicals used in the past. Nutech Paint has developed a most effective, water bases Nu- ecosafe-stripper solution. THE POINT OF DIFFERENCE Nutech Paint provides the alternative that industry is seeking. There are 3 types of NU-EcoSafe-Strip products, Architectural stripper, Industrial Coatings stripper (Sacrificial remover) and High performance stripper, brushable water-based paint strippers that are biodegradable, non-toxic, user-friendly and environmentally safe. Extremely effective in removing the toughest industrial coatings like epoxies and urethanes from metal, concrete, wood, masonry and brick FOUR PHASES OF COATING REMOVAL 1. Apply Nu-ecosafe-stripper to surface approximately 3 to 5 millimetre thick

page 12

2. Allow the Nu-ecosafe-stripper to do it’s magic, penetrating through the coatings 3. The coating adhesion to the surface is released from the substrate 4. Scrape and high pressure wash surface ready for recoating Extremely effective against all kinds of coatings including high performance epoxies, urethanes, enamels and powder coat. Minimal containment systems are required compared to abrasive blasting BENEFITS 5. As a complete replacement for conventional, toxic chemical strippers 6. As a substitute for some abrasive blasting and as an accelerator for other types of mechanical removal like UHP water blasting and track blasting 7. As a viable alternative for stripping paint where stripping paint could not be done before –such as food processing plants and enclosed areas.

It is also very effective on permanent marker, lipstick, crayon, tape residue, ink, scuff marks, label residue, chewing gum and more. NU ECOSAFE STRIP ECOZORB: ECOZORB is a non-chemical, non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, odourless dry encapsulate. ECOZORB changes the way liquid and semi-liquid spills and liquid waste is treated in domestic, industrial and commercial environments. ECOZORB is environmentally safe and completely eliminates the need for water to be used in the rapid encapsulation of spilled liquids in domestic, commercial or industrial situations. The product also captures odours or vapours which may emanate from liquids, safe to dispose of in landfill.

NU ECOSAFE STRIP RUST CONVERTER & INHIBITOR: Water based rust converting compounds specifically designed to provide a clean, rust-free surface prior to recoating. NU ECOSAFE STRIP RUST CONVERTER & INHIBITOR can convert heavy rust and prevent re-rusting for extended periods of time. Bendigo TAFE rebranding BENDIGO TAFE IS EXCITED TO BE ROLLING OUT AN EXTENSIVE BRAND RELAUNCH, TO INTRODUCE ITS NEW IDENTITY.

The rebranding project was taken on internally by the Marketing and Communications team and its in-house graphic designer. There has been extensive work carried out in creating the design and style that carries across merchandise, stationery, student cards and more.

Staff briefings have been held this week as the initial point of communication, with a launch to the Bendigo business community tonight through a Bendigo Business Council after five function.

The brand is a reflection of the institutes values and strategic objectives, and its introduction brings with it a new culture, a new direction and a new future for Bendigo TAFE.

This new identity is a result of the change in legal entity name from Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE to Bendigo TAFE, and is an exciting move forward. Previously known as BRIT (the Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE), the organisation has officially changed its name to Bendigo TAFE and is now trading as such.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY In conjunction with Bendigo Business Council, the new

All references to BRIT will be removed as quickly as possible, but it is a huge undertaking and will take a period of time. “There are hundreds of documents that we are going to have to work through,” John Rossi, Director of Marketing & Business Development, said. “Everything is being revamped to bear the name Bendigo TAFE – from signage, print ads and promotional goods to email salutations, uniforms, and website pages. All customer facing communications will feature the new branding immediately.” John said. “It was a very confusing name in the marketplace,” Mr Rossi says of the old moniker. “[People wondered] what BRIT actually stood for, and whether or not it was the same place as TAFE!”

Master Painters Association participates in the Job Skills Expo at Warragul’s Lardner Park 2013

Over three thousand students from secondary schools across Gippsland attended the biggest JobSkills Expo ever staged in the region. More than 150 exhibitors provided a showcase of careers with hands on activities in areas of bricklaying, hospitality, horticulture, painting and more. Financial sponsorship of this event came from a wide variety of organisations including GippsTafe. This support greatly contributed to the day enabling provision of free transport for every student to or from the expo, this significantly increased student participation and removed any barriers students faced due to distance. The Master Painters Association was represented by two of our board directors, Robert Mawditt and Stan Stamatopoulos who were kept busy the entire day with

hands on activities including sponge stippling, wood graining etc. Jodie Rebbechi from the MPA with the help of Rebecca Lindsay from Valspar Pty Ltd (Wattyl/Solver) were also kept extremely busy answering student questions and talking to the teachers about careers and career paths in the Painting and Decorating Industry. It was surprising to see the number of females very keen to take up apprenticeships and to learn more about the industry. The Master Painters Association would like to thank JobSkills Expo and GippsTafe for allowing us to be involved in such a wonderful opportunity to market our industry to the future painters of Australia.

Herald Sun Careers Expo 2013 On the 16th, 17th and 18th of August the Master Painters were involved in the Herald Sun Careers Expo as part of the Master Builders Stand.

We were fortunate enough to be invited to contribute to the Expo with hands on interactive activities that the students and future painters could experience. The attendees visiting the Expo were able to try paper hanging, wood graining, sponge stippling and other decorative finishes on board which they were then able to take home. It was a very busy couple of days with over 24,000 people attending the event. Our Board Members and Members were kept busy over the three days showing the attendees that a Painting and Decorating Apprenticeship is more than just sanding and painting. The industry hub organised by Jarrod Flanigan, Careers Manager at the Master Builders was certainly one of the busiest and exciting areas at the expo. The attendees were even able to decorate their tool boxes made at the carpenters stand. We would not be able to attend events like this without the support of our Associate Members. We thank Viponds Paints Pty Ltd, Australian Brushware Corporation, Dulux Enviro Solutions, Dulux and Valspar for their contributions and donations. It was fantastic to be involved in this event and we would like to thank Jarrod Flanigan for inviting us along with the other trade associations to be part of this event. We would also like to thank our Board Members for all their hard work leading up to and during the event. We would also like to thank Leo Gmehling, Ross Banks, Helen Anthony, Colin Thomas, Jimmy Zhao and especially Rebecca Lindsay from Valspar for her enormous contribution to the Expo.
