Dear Reader, It's been a great year serving Massachusetts as Historian. I learned a lot about photography, about friendship, about cheesiness. But above all, the closeness and camaraderie of MassJCL members will never leave me.

Programs Used Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word

I find it hard to write plainly about my feelings, since there are so many! Joy, above all; contentment, certainly; but also a sense of happy anticipation for the future. I’ve made friends here that I’ll keep for the rest of my life; I’ve learned lessons here that I could not have learned from any other student organization; and I’ve grown to become a better, more self-confident person.

Nereid (Calypso) (p19): Michelle84.deviantart.com

That’s what I think JCL is all about— creating this safe, nurturing environment for us students to learn quickly, read widely, and grow immensely as individuals. Whether we find our niche in Certamen, or socializing, or leading, we all find places for ourselves here. But we’re never restricted to our roles, which is another great thing about the Junior Classical League. Athletes are friends with academics; artists talk to anti-government activists; and I’ve run out of nouns that start with A. I will continue to love and endorse and support the Junior Classical League in any capacity that I can. And I hope that my respect for this organization can be gleaned from this scrapbook. That’s all that I want, really. Emily Chang MassJCL Historian 2010—2011

Every year, the Massachusetts Second Vice President throws a Nationals Spirit Party to get the Massachusetts delegation excited for Nationals, and to practice Cheers so that we can dominate. This year’s SecondVP, Christopher “Chriso” Hynds, threw the party at a lake park in Milton, Massachusetts. The weather was pleasant and the games were fun. Plus, the cheers practices worked, because we won Spirit a few weeks later!

n 2009, Grace Thomas, then the 1st Vice President, came up with the idea to create a day in which MassJCLers could learn from current MassJCL board members about different topics. For example, students interested in website design could learn from the MJCL Technical Coordinator about creating websites. Named Voice Your School Day, this event is now a part of the MJCL calendar and draws student delegates from many MJCL chapters every year.

> EDA KACELI Since she's in charge of publicity for MassJCL,

but Alyssa Tomkowicz is amazing nonetheless. As MassJCL Editor, she gave a "Publications" workshop at VYS Day. Connie Chang (BLS) and Kim Dilego (MTG) attended Alyssa's workshop.

Chriso Hynds, MassJCL 2nd VP, went around selling raffle tickets to raise money for the organization. His family donated a gift card and some other goodies in a gift basket. Over the course of the day, he raised a good amount of money for MassJCL. However, Chriso couldn't anticipate that Melinda Wang (MassJCL Treasurer) would win 3 of some 5 raffles. In the end, Melinda gave two of her baskets away.

Classics Day

Learning about Roman Holidays from Professors December 10th, 2010 - Boston University, Boston, MA

CLASSICS DAY Held every December at Boston

University, Classics Day is the ultimate celebration of classical learning in MassJCL. Traditionally, it's held on a Thursday--students get waivers from MassJCL to leave school for a day in order to learn about the classics. This year's theme, as selected by 1st VP Eda Kaceli, was Roman Holidays. The classes are all taught by Classics university professors or high school teachers. Lunch is also included for the students.

Chriso Hynds (2nd VP) is always on his raffling game. PAGE/1

COMPETITION

CERTAMEN MATCHES C

ertamen is a major part of the MassJCL experience. Year after year, the MassJCL sends incredible teams to compete at the National level, and year after year, new people try the sport. With such incredibly dedicated coaches, it's hardly a surprise that this is the case. Enjoy this sampling of photos! The photo to your left is of the Harvard Certamen Scrimmage's Upper Level Finals (4/2/2011).

Every year, the MassJCL hosts a State Convention at Barnstable High School in Hyannis, Massachusetts. State Convention is the event to be at if you're a MassJCLer. Modelled on the National Convention, the MassJCL State Convention has

academic testing, art contests, a Certamen tournament, athletic competitions, dances, karoake, elections, and, of course, That's Entertainment. 4/29 - 5/1/2011. Hyannis, MA.

Dylan Drolette and Vanessa Ruano--the incoming and outgoing MASCL Presidents, respectively-got up on stage to advertise the MassJCL State T-shirts. Dylan realized only after he tried putting his shirt on that he had grabbed an extra-small. JCL Sponsors need to take breaks from sponsoring once in a while, so they escape to teacher lounges. These three BLS Latin teachers were surprised to see a student wander into their headquarters.
