Father and Son, 2014 Acrylic on Canvas 30” x 30” $6,500
Tropical Heat Quad, 2016 Mono Cast Rubber on Wood Panel, and Sparkles 24” x 24” x 2” $3,500
Courtesy of the artist and Gallery NAGA Nelson’s painting draws on his boyhood in Angola, his training as an artist in Cuba, and his involvement with contemporary art in America. He has developed an approach to composition in which his imagery and symbology are united in one overall flat black-silhouetted form, through the openings of which a second color shines. The work can be read as a series of linked narratives and observations about Da Costa’s life - his childhood, the murder of his family in Angola’s civil war, and his use of art making as a gateway to the future.
Niho received her BFA from Parsons School of Design and an MFA from the University of Hawaii. In 2016, she had a solo show at Miller Yezerski Gallery and exhibited at the Fitchburg Art Museum.
