1 | ME Hello!

WELCOME TO MY PORTFOLIO

Hello, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Mary, I am from the Boston area, born and raised. I have a Bachelors Degree in Interior Architecture & Design from UMass Dartmouth. I am an extremely hard worker and strive to make a positive difference in the world. Sustainability is in the core of all my project as it is one of my passions. I hope the next few pages give you a snapshot of who I am as a person and designer.

Bachelors of Science | Interior Design + Architecture Summa Cum Laude | UMass Dartmouth Class of 2020

I went to two schools while in college, the first being Mount Ida College which sadly closed in 2018 due to poor budeting. Thankfully, our Director Rose Botti-Salitsky lead us through it and we landed at UMASS Dartmouth. We became the only CIDA accreddted public Interiors program in all of New England!

Boston

I absoluty love Boston, I have always loved going to the city to explosre and see what it has to offer. I was lucky enough to be able to work at multiple design firms and business while going to school. I volunteered at the IIDA Fashion Show for 3 years, this past year I got to strut my stuff on the runway for UMass Dartmouth. It was a blast!

Sustainability!

Sustainability is in the core of everything I do. After learning about how the choices I make directly effect the environment, I have become extremely passionate about educating others. Every choice I make while designing has sustainability at the core. I believe it is our job as designers to make the best decisions possible for the well being of the occupants and the environment they live in. I became a LEED green associate in 2019 after asking Interface for a sponsorship for me and 4 of my classmates.

Roses are my favorite flower and symbolize my grandmother.

One of my favorite places I have ver been to is Kanab, Utah. I got to volunteer at Best Friends Animal Society’s Headquaters for a week. It was the most beautiful place...I can’t wait to go back!

Sa

y m m

Sam Bam is my puppy, I got him on Saint Paddy’s Day in 2020. Yes, he was a quarantine dog, and the best little dude out there. I am huge animal lover and he is the bestest boy., Just look at him! I also have two kittys Brady (named after Tom) and Willow!

THE LAWRENCE PRE-RELEASE REDESIGN

This project is a redesign of a local minimum security correctional facility. The concept of this design is based of the city of Lawrence’s rich history or textile manufacturing. The design was based around the rehabilitation and education of inmates. Color psychology and safety of all occupants were key figures in this design. This project consists of a total renovation of the existing building as well as the building of an addition. Skills Used: Revit, Enscape & Photoshop

THE LAWRENCE PRE-RELEASE REDESIGN COMPASSION

EDUCATION

A NEW CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

Why a jail? Growing up with a family member in the Sheriffs Department, I have heard many stories about how they have arrested the same people over and over again. It made me wonder why? What is not working in the penal system? After doing an abundance of research I found that lack of education is one of the leading causes of recidivism. Which led me to redesign a local prison.

STATISTICS - At 2,300,000 people, the United States has more incarcerted people in the entire world. - 7 in 10 previously incarcerated people willl commit a new crome and half of those will return to jail. - $1,000,000 investment in incarceration = 300 less crimes from happening. Wheras a $1,000,000 investment in prison education will stop 600 crimes from occuring. - Recidivism rates for inmates who participated in higher education coursed where 46% lower than those who did not.

RESEARCH OBSERVATIONAL

INTERACTIVE

On October 11th 2019 I had the opportunity to tour the Lawrence Pre-Release Correctional Center.

An interview with an inmate was conducted as well as surveys for the officer staff.

Sentences: 2 Years or less Security Level: Minimum Rules: They are allowed to move freely about the grounds however need to be in dorms for checks every 2 hours. - This is a transitional facility meant to be the bridge between normal life and incarceration.

Outside Colors = Over Whelming Programs = Inadequate Best Programs = Hands On / Creative GED Programs are Offered But Not Taken Advantage Of Inmates Act Out Due To Boredom

CONCEPT This thesis’s concept is based on what built Lawrence. Mills + Production, every thread in a loom makes a solid piece of fabric. The intention of this new facility is to transform and rehabilitate each person and integrate them back into the fabric of society.

project scope - Scope if this project is the Administration Building. - Focus Areas will include spaces on the 1st and 2nd Floors. - Occupancy Group is I-3. - Approximately 50+ Inmates will occupy the 2nd Floor Dorm.

CONCEPT MODEL This concept model was made of balsa wood and twine. It was inspired by the turning of a water wheel that allowed for the production of textiles and other goods. This motif can be seen throughout the project

- Current Conditions include: - Vegetable Farm - K-9 Housing on Property. - Merrimack River nearby. - Interstate 495 nearby. - Offsite Job Oppurtintys nearby.

3 | STAY Hospitaility THE BARLEY POP HOTEL

The Barley Pop Hotel was designed to create a new and exciting hotel in the Boston Seaport area. Incorporating sustainable features into the space was key in setting it apart from surrounding establishments. The hotel includes large amenity spaces, funky guest rooms and a in-house brewery. Skills Used: Revit, Sketch-UP, Enscape & Photoshop.

BARLEY POP HOTEL The Barley Pop Hotel was inspired by the rich colors and textures of beer. The spaces were created using bright yellows and oranges with contrasting black and white tones. Bubbles found in a glass of beer as well as the glass itself were integrated into the design of the hotel.

This project was to redesign a school for children with severe educational differences. Solutions were needed for tight spaces, flexibility and ADA compliance. This project was budget focused, finding inexpensive yet effective FF+E was imperative. The design of the building was focused on their own logo and identity to make the occupants as comfortable as possible in their new space. Skills Used: Revit, Enscape & Photoshop

RENOVATION This design is based off of the Meeting Street Logo. They had no identity in their facility so incorporating their logo in both color and branding was very important. All of the classrooms are a solid color in calming hues to not over stimulate the students. Multifunctional spaces and flexibility was key in designing this space.

6 | SERVE Institutional STRATUM

Stratum is a service center that serves the Boston homeless population. Located adjacent to the Pine Street Inn, Stratum provides supplemental services that the Inn cannot. These services include, individual showers, manicure stations, laundry facilities pet care and counseling. This project was completed with a partner. Skills Used: Revit, Enscape & Photoshop

Stratum’s new “Basic Needs Center,” is inspired by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and is meant to nurture these basic experiences. The layers of the pyramid explain the five steppingstones in the psychological progression of happiness and stability. The design is meant to embody and emulate what it is like to care for your most basic needs in order to begin your journey to the higher layers of the pyramid.
