JAY FIELDING MARYBOROUGH’S CBD had to be evacuated after floodgates failed to keep water out of the city, just hours before the peak of a major flood of the Mary River. The gates under Adelaide Street could not be closed on Sunday,

allowing floodwater to back up in stormwater drains and inundate parts of the inner city designed to be protected by the emergency flood levee that was erected on Saturday.

“The gates underneath the recently installed levee have been damaged and, as a result, the CBD will now bear the full impact of the flood,” the alert said.

About 1pm, the Fraser Coast Regional Council issued an urgent alert, urging people to evacuate the CBD.

Less than an hour later, Queensland Police Service made an emergency declaration and established an exclusion zone

bordered by Lennox, Adelaide, Kent, Alice and Richmond Streets.

Ergon Energy also cut off power to large sections of Maryborough for safety reasons.

Granville residents, already stranded by flooding, were advised to bottle water on Sunday after a sinkhole threatened to compromise the pipe supplying the suburb with water.

Low-lying homes and businesses were inundated, with the undercover car park at Woolworths and travelators into the store inundated. CONTINUED ON PAGE TWO

Preparations ahead of the flood began in earnest on Saturday, with businesses such as the Deck and Anchor restaurant at the Mary River Marina and Mitchell’s Fruit and Veg Market in the Woolworths car park emptying their premises.

Both the Lamington and Granville bridges were closed on Saturday as the level of the river began rapidly rising.

Roads were inundated and damaged across the region, including the Bruce Highway.

The Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road was also cut on Sunday, with flooding at Cobbles Gully, Saltwater Creek and St Helens.

Emergency repairs were made to the highway on Saturday, with one lane able to be opened, but

Trains at Downer EDI were moved to higher ground on Saturday.

Unprecedented rainfall caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth was the cause of the widespread flooding. The largest falls were recorded in the 24 hours to 9am on Saturday, concentrated on vast tracts of the saturated Mary River catchment. The rain caused major flooding in the biggest tributaries of the Mary, including Munna Creek, Tinana Creek and Yabba Creek. The towns of Tiaro, Miva and Brooweena

TRUNCATED EDITION OF THE SUN Many will notice the truncated nature of

this edition of The Sun, brought about by the flooding of our office and the stranding of our staff at various locations around the region.

Be assured we will be back to full force again by next edition. Along with a lot of other people, we will be busy this week throwing out the contents of our building and hosing out mud. Many of our advertisers have been affected, along with Council and State Government

Hundreds of animals missing in floods CRAIG WINTER DISTRESSING posts by owners looking for stock and pets have inundated Facebook. Missing horses and cattle top the lists which also include domestic pets. Very few city dwellers give much of a thought to the thousands of cattle that are kept just as close to Maryborough as Tiaro and Bauple, but owners have posted a constant stream of requests looking for lost herds. One post alone was looking for 30 lost head.

As fences were cut to prevent animals drowning, more and more beasts were wandering through neighbouring properties making it hard to keep track of them. Many property owners have found it difficult to find high areas to relocate their herds, and so neighbours and friends opened up their yards to any and all animals that needed safety.

(Top left) This magnificent bull was just one of many reported missing during the floods. (Top right) Ruby the dog went missing and (bottom) a lost herd wanders through canefields looking for safety. (Facebook)

Good news as ‘yacht dog’ is rescued CRAIG WINTER ON SATURDAY a Facebook post of a stranded dog caught the attention of everyone in Maryborough. As the Mary River started to flood and the speed of the current increased, the yacht’s anchor began to drag. The image of a flooded dinghy tied to the vessel sparked concerns for the boat’s owner, but that quickly turned to his dog who had no means of escape. With the likelihood of

conditions worsening during the day, local man Cory and his friends jumped into the nearest dinghy around noon and went to the dog’s aid.

They found that no one else was aboard, and managed to get her into their tender just before the anchor started to drag once again. The happy pooch was taken back to the Brolga Theatre where she was welcomed by a small group of admirers who were sheltering there. Other images of boats drifting loose and

slamming into others started to emerge later that day, with many owners unable to save their boats in time.

Heavy debris and tree trunks travelling at speed down the river made any rescue efforts dangerous, and emergency services urged residents not to enter the water. Later on Saturday afternoon, the dog’s owner was located safe and well, his dog returned and his yacht secured. Candidate steps up early

Unprecedented weather event

CRAIG WINTER

JAY FIELDING

A NEW candidate for the next Council election has raised his hand.

PREMIER Annastacia Palaszczuk said rainfall in the region that caused a major flood in Maryborough had been “unexpected” and “absolutely unprecedented”.

Daniel Beattie says that the ‘heritage city’ should lead by example, by using vacant city buildings for housing and Council offices.

“At this stage we are expecting about 80 homes to be impacted,” she said. The Bureau of Meteorology issued warnings on Friday night for storms capable of delivering 140mm – far less than what was dumped in parts of the region. BOM meteorologist Laura Boekel said the volume of rain that fell and the storm cell’s behaviour had been surprising. “In terms of this event, (it was) incredibly rare,” Ms Boekel said. “We very rarely see thunderstorms sustain in a location for such a long period of time,” she said. “While we were aware that we were expecting

“We deserve better” he said. “I’m going to run in the 2024 election because Council is out of touch with what the rate payers want.” thunderstorm activity and we could see heavy rain associated with that, the magnitude of what we saw really escalated through the night.” Ms Boekel said the weather system had been difficult to forecast. “We gave the most amount of warning that we possibly could but we acknowledge it was a situation that escalated quickly.” Ms Palaszczuk thanked staff at agencies that had responded to the flooding.

“I know it’s not for a few years, but I’m getting my name out there early.” Mr Beattie has a history of renovating inner city buildings, and turning them into modern apartments that keep their heritage character. “I may be a new face in Maryborough, but I think I can make a difference.” he said. “I pay $3000 in rates for a one bedroom/one bathroom apartment, about the same as a four bedroom/three bathroom house. We need a better rate scale.” “There don’t seem to be

any proactive measures in place for the vandalism that I see throughout the CBD, just costly reactions.”

The next Queensland local government elections will be held in 2024. In 2020, 35 candidates vied for the eleven available positions with the incumbents finishing strongly in the mostly conservative Maryborough community. Mr Beattie says his tilt at Division 4 reflects his inner city life. “It’s been suggested that vandalism in the CBD costs ratepayers around $500,000/annum.” “Let’s spend some of that and be pro active with night patrols. Prevent it from happening in the first place and make it safe.” he said. “My focus would be housing. The smaller one and two level shops could be easily turned in to small apartments with limited cooking facility’s which would also encourage the residents to spend at the local restaurants, shops and clubs, and provide quality housing in a town where

Daniel Beattie is putting his hand as a potential Councillor in 2024. (Craig Winter)

rental accommodation is very limited but Council need to work with the shop owners that are paying extravagant rates for empty shops.”

“There’s not a lot of demand for commercial space and you can see this by just walking around the CBD and seeing all the ‘For Lease’ signs.”

Girl missing in flood

New Year brings new hopes CRAIG WINTER

FRASER Coast Regional Council has admitted that 2022 may bring some challenges due to COVID, but Mayor George Seymour and Councillors have a positive view of what’s in store for residents this year. “Through the pandemic we have all seen how we must work together as a community.” said the Mayor.

JAY FIELDING ONE man is dead and there were grave fears for a teenage girl after more than half a metre of rain was dumped in parts of the Wide Bay Burnett region. The 22-year-old Sunshine Coast man died after the ute he was driving became submerged on Cherry Tree Road at Kanigan near Glenwood on Friday night. The man’s body was recovered by emergency services crews 16 hours later on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, rescue crews were searching for a 14-year-old girl who was swept into floodwaters at Booubyjan, west of Glenwood. The girl and her 40-year-old father scrambled from the Toyota Camry they were travelling in on the Burnett Highway. He was found clinging to a tree on Saturday afternoon and flown to Bundaberg Hospital but the girl remained missing on Sunday. Swiftwater helicopter

rescue crews responded to dozens of calls for help following the intense downpours on Friday night and Saturday morning.

The trio was the second family to be rescued in the region by the Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crew.

The Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crew winched a family from the second storey of their home, after they became trapped by rising floodwater on the Fraser Coast on Saturday morning.

About 7.45am Saturday the crew was called to search for a family of four who had spent the night in their car after they became cut off as roads flooded around them.

The rescue chopper was called in after the three people realised their house was surrounded by water and they had no way to escape. A Queensland Ambulance Service Flight Paramedic was winched down to the family, and first carefully helped an elderly couple into the rescue basket, to be hoisted to the hovering chopper. Their son, aged in his 20s, was then winched into the aircraft, along with the Flight Paramedic. The trio was uninjured and flown to a safe location, where they were taken into the care of local State Emergency Service crews.

The chopper pilot managed to find a safe area to land and the family – a mother, father and two children – made their way on foot to the aircraft. The family told the rescue crew, they had been driving from Proserpine to Brisbane on Friday night when about 11pm their GPS directed them to take a turn-off to avoid flooding. They found themselves cut off by water in all directions, so called for help and bunkered down for the night. Soaked and tired, but uninjured, the family was flown to the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Bundaberg base where they were helped by Queensland Police.

“The last two years have sometimes been very difficult, but they have not lacked in purpose.” West Maryborough resident Gayle Miles and others have applauded Council’s approach to the past couple of years. “They’ve done a marvellous job.” she said. “We’re relatively new to the area and we’ve felt as safe here as we could anywhere, and they seem to be just getting on with the job and not being overly distracted by everything else.” Mr Seymour was happy with how everyone had banded together in 2021.

“I’m proud to be part of a council who work well together – we may not always agree with one another, but we do work well together and this should continue to provide some great outcomes for our community. “This year in my role as councillor I’d like to focus on the smaller things that make a big difference to people and getting the basics right in council’s service to the community. “I plan to continue a high level of engagement and communication with our community.” she said. Councillor Paul Truscott said that the start of a new year is always a great way to look at a clean slate.

“(I like) to see what we can achieve for the greater good of our community. “One of the main personal goals I wanted to achieve prior to election is increasing council’s communication efforts to the community. “I believe that’s something we are improving on and always will strive to do better and keep the community informed and involved. “There’s projects we have been working on that I want to see reach fruition and I also want to see us as a community come out stronger after natural disasters such as floods and the pandemic.”

“We have sometimes had to change our behaviour to contribute to the community effort to keep people safe. “The caring and diligent manner in which Maryborough has weathered the pandemic has kept people safe and into the future will help us to be prosperous, kind and supportive.” he added. Councillor Jade Wellings said that New Years is one of the most exciting times of the year for her. “I really enjoy taking the opportunity to reflect and reset my goals, both personal and professional.

Shelves stripped bare

IF YOU needed any more reason to stay out of floodwater, here’s one.

Video of a small bull shark swimming in a flooded Queens Park went viral on social media. The footage, credited to Judi Ellis, was shared by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services on Saturday. “We often talk about the dangers lurking in floodwaters, now here’s the proof,” the QFES post said.

Already struggling for stock after COVID shortages, Fraser Coast supermarket shelves were stripped bare by Saturday afternoon as news of the predicted floods spread. (Jay Fielding)

HOUSE, GARDEN & NATURE

The Maryborough Sun, Thursday 13th January 2022

Mary and Susan – Sister Rivers of the Fraser Coast LINDSAY TITMARSH OCCASIONALLY, weather systems deliver rainfall in quantities large enough to inundate dwellings and to damage farmland. When people’s homes go underwater, it is a very traumatic experience for them. Imagine what it would be like to have your home flooded almost every day. To find out what problems that causes, just ask a Mangrove Ant. Mangrove Ants spend their entire lifetime living in tidal mangrove forests of tropical and sub-tropical areas. In these places, they have no competition from other ant species as conditions there are too harsh. They scavenge tidal forest floors and trees for food.

Their nests are tunnelled into the mud of the forest floor, not on open tidal flats. The problem here being, that average sized tides inundate these areas at least once daily. During incoming tides, as the water level rises, the insects retreat into their nests which are intricately constructed so as to have air chambers which cannot flood. These ants must have oxygen supplies, they cannot survive in water. Large spring tides can inundate their nest sites for two or three hours, which means that during these times, oxygen supplies for the many residents can sometimes reach critical levels. I have observed quite a few of these colonies in the Mary-Susan Estuary and

have noticed an important feature on nest site positioning. If the insects built a nest on a flat section of the forest floor, their burrows would be permanently filled with water because the saturated mud would not allow water to soak away. It appears the ants are programmed well enough to know they must build on an elevated position or close to a tidal gutter, creek bank or lower area, to allow for drainage vents.

Mangrove Ants use the surface tension of water to skip across tidal pools. According to world renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough, this species of ant is the only one that can swim – using breaststroke. It must require a very time-consuming effort to

housekeeper, I say this, “The work you do is much appreciated, but imagine how lucky you are that you are not a Mangrove Ant”.

Kittens galore after Christmas FROM THE MARYBOROUGH ANIMAL REFUGE

THE MANAGERS had a surprise gift one morning last week. They found 4 newborn kittens snuggled up to their mother, Blanche, in the cattery! Blanche had arrived at the Refuge 7 weeks ago with a litter of 6 kittens. Now that the litter was weaned, she was scheduled for desexing the following week. However, unknown to the Refuge managers, she was already newly pregnant when she arrived. This is unfortunately the life for an undesexed female cat. They can have their first litter at 6 months old, when barely out of kittenhood themselves, and they may remain pregnant almost their entire lives, still feeding one litter while pregnant with the next one. By 2 years of age, they can be worn-out and sickly from the constant drain on their nutrition. Many people who adopt a

cat that has had constant litters will say that once they are desexed and has recovered some health, they will often become playful and lively, as though discovering a kittenhood they never had. The life of an undesexed male Tom is not much better; spending their entire lives fighting over females and territory, ignoring food in the constant desire to mate and fight, ending up malnourished and with festering wounds from scratches and bites. The message is clear: desex all cats, male and female.

Check out the Refuge Facebook Page: Maryborough Animal Refuge and Pet Boarding to see kittens that are available for pre-adoption until they are old enough to leave the Refuge.

By the first week of the New Year, Maryborough Animal Refuge had reached a total of 38 surrendered or abandoned kittens.

food – both wet and dry.

A late Christmas gift was discovered outside the gates of the Refuge on 27 December: a cardboard box with 5 adorable kittens inside.

But donations of kitten food would be greatly appreciated.

It is fortunate that they were found after only a few hours. The Refuge desperately needs good quality kitten

Due to the generosity of the community, there is sufficient adult dog and cat food for some time.

In addition, special kitten litter, called Paper Pellets, is also needed for the very young kittens. Ordinary clay cat litter cuts their delicate little paws, and they try to eat the crystal ones!

Hundreds of Qlders make costly fuel mistake Queenslanders have been warned to pay attention at the bowser after it was revealed RACQ Roadside Assistance patrols rescued more than 600 drivers who had put the wrong fuel in their vehicles last year. RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said it was a simple mistake that could result in costly vehicle repairs, with distraction often the leading cause.

could lead to thousands of dollars in repair bills.”

“Sometimes it’s a simple mistake because they’re driving a hire car or a vehicle they’ve borrowed from a friend or family member.

“If you have put the wrong fuel in your car, don’t start it.

“Other times, the driver may be confused by looking for a certain coloured nozzle at the pump, because that’s what they’re used to at their local and they don’t double check the label,” Ms Ross said. “Many people believe diesel nozzles don’t fit in a petrol car’s fuel tank, but this isn’t always true, so please don’t rely on that assumption. “Always double check the fuel type before you pull the trigger. “Even a small among of the wrong fuel can cause significant damage to the vehicle’s engine and

Ms Ross said drivers who had incorrectly fuelled their tanks should follow some simple steps.

“Turning the key will circulate the fuel and destroy the engine,” she said. “If you have started the engine, turn it off immediately and call us on 13 1905. “In Brisbane, we have a dedicated Fuel Assist van that can remove the wrong fuel and get you back on the road. “If you’re outside this region and realise your mistake before you start driving, our Roadside Assistance team can organise to tow you to a mechanic to drain the fuel and fix any damage to your engine.” INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY RACQ

Year’s sporting predictions BRENDAN BOWERS SPORTS: As we begin 2022, it is time to look ahead to the sporting year, gaze into the crystal ball and make some sound and some not so sound predictions about our teams and sportspeople. I love following sport on the Fraser Coast and support all players, teams and codes; these are my opinions. It is not to slight or deride anyone or any team, and I know, and I hope, that I am proven wrong on more than one occasion. I encourage you to give me your thoughts and tell me why I am wrong or right. We will review in December, seeing how close we get. Prediction 1 – ALL SPORT - A bit of a no brainer, Covid will cause havoc with local sporting draws over the first part of the year. Teams will lose players due to being struck down and needing to isolate. It

will cause re-adjustment, rescheduling and cancellations. Prediction 2 - RUGBY LEAGUE – The Hervey Bay Seagulls to make the Bundaberg Rugby League Grand Final but fall short in the final game to Past Brothers. Wallaroos will cause headaches to all teams and make the semi-finals. Prediction 2 – AFL – The Hervey Bay Bombers will repeat their 2021 season success but will not go through undefeated. Bay Power will once again play them in the grand final. The Hervey Bay Bombers will continue their domination to win again in the women’s competition. Prediction 3 – FOOTBALL – The Fraser Flames will finish the highest Fraser Coast team in the Wide Bay Premier League and make it to the grand final. The KSS Jets women’s team will avenge their 2021 extratime loss and win the grand final. Prediction 4 – CRICKET

– Bushrangers Gold will win the Fraser Coast Senior competition and defeat Cavaliers in the grand final, with Ausocks falling short. Prediction 5 – HOCKEY – Granville will bounce back in the men’s competition and defeat Magpies in the grand final. Prediction 6 – NETBALL – The Hervey Bay Netball Association division one grand final will see Breakaways once again play Bullets. Breakaways will take the chocolates on the big day. Prediction 7 – SOFTBALL – In the combined Hervey Bay and Coral Coast men’s competition, Maryborough West will come through to claim the win. While in the women’s United Firesticks will be too strong. Prediction 8 – HERVEY BAY 100 – The event will once again be the premier local sporting event of the year.

ARE YOU MISSING YOUR LOCAL SPORTING NEWS? You can find it again at FC Sports Media

FC Sports Media is a sporting news service dedicated to the clubs, the teams and the sportspeople of the Fraser Coast. FC Sports Media includes regular contributions from local sports administrators, sportspeople, and volunteers.

Prediction 9 – SPEEDWAY – After battling continued rain, the season will be a success, with the club to once again host the V8 Sprint Cars in 2023. Prediction 10 – SPORTSPEOPLE AND SPORTING TEAMS

- Our representative teams and players will once again prove that the Fraser Coast produces top-quality athletes and players.

from any contest.

Fraser Coast athletes punch above their weight classes across all sports and don’t back down

I would love to hear your thoughts about what you think I got right and wrong.
