JAY FIELDING MARYBOROUGH MP Bruce Saunders is finding it tough to get support for his idea to build a pipeline from Paradise Dam to secure the Fraser Coast’s water security.

Even from his government’s own water minister.

Following the Federal Government’s announcement that it would match $600m in funding from the State

Government to rebuild the dam, Mr Saunders renewed his calls for a pipeline which he first floated in 2017.

The spillway at Paradise Dam was lowered in 2020, reducing its 300,000-megalitre capacity by about half, after an investigation found the dam’s wall did not meet safety standards and could fail during an extreme weather event.

“We are in contact with the FCRC regularly on this issue and are happy to work with them on a long-term solution,” he said.

Mr Butcher said the government worked with councils to support them in meeting their urban water supply needs.

“I look forward to visiting Lenthalls Dam with Bruce Saunders in the coming weeks and continuing these important discussions with the Fraser Coast Regional Council,” he said.

“Since 2015, the Queensland Government has spent over $2.6 billion on water infrastructure and planning to ensure water security for Queenslanders.”

Farmers in the Bundaberg region, who use the water stored in Paradise for irrigation of a massive agriculture sector, also don’t support a pipeline.

Childers cane and macadamia grower Joe Russo has farmed in the Bundaberg region his entire life and is intimately aware of the history of Paradise.

“A dam on the Burnett River, for the purposes of irrigation and urban water supplies for the Bundaberg area, has been earmarked since 1970,” Mr Russo said.

“The Bundaberg region spent 35 years lobbying for Paradise Dam to be built,” he said.

“It was our Labor Member for Bundaberg, Nita Cunningham, who finally got it built, but sadly the

dam was much smaller than originally planned”.

“The original dam was always intended to be much larger than the 300,000ML dam that was finally built in 2005.

“To suggest there is enough water in the system to supply the long-term needs of the Bundaberg region and the Fraser Coast is ludicrous, especially when Paradise Dam hasn’t even been reinstated yet”.

“It could be some years before Paradise is rebuilt and full again.

“Surely Mr Saunders can see that he needs to be making better plans for his region, rather than relying on a broken dam which still needs to be fixed.”

“For decades regional communities like Maryborough, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Coalstoun Lakes and others have been screaming out for long-term, strategic investment in water infrastructure, but the Labor government has not had the foresight to invest in crucial infrastructure like dams.”

Mr Marland suggested an alternative plan to secure the Fraser Coast’s water supply, although the government may find that unpalatable given the result the last time it was pursued.

Tom Marland, a Bundaberg lawyer who is leading a class action suit regarding Paradise Dam, said he was disappointed a Labor MP for a regional seat wanted to “poach” water from another regional Labor seat.

Mr Marland said the Bundaberg region shouldn’t pay the price for what he said was a lack of investment in water infrastructure by Labor for more than 20 years.

“Surely Mr Saunders would be better off

working with the new member for Bundaberg, Tom Smith, to lobby for greater water security for both their regional communities rather than trying to poach water from a small dam which has just been cut in half,” he said.

“It’s clear the best longterm solution for the Fraser Coast is for a decent dam to be built on the Mary River, which is very reliable and flows right through Mr Saunders’ hometown of Maryborough” he said.

“If the Labor governments of the last 30 years have not had the foresight to invest in crucial infrastructure like a dam on the Mary River, that shouldn’t become

Bundaberg’s problem.”

The former Labor governments of Peter Beattie and Anna Bligh planned to build a dam on the Mary to shore up the south-east’s water supply, but the proposal was killed off by then-federal environment minister Peter Garrett in 2009.

Mr Marland’s sentiments were echoed by Queensland’s Opposition.

Shadow Water Minister Deb Frecklington said she welcomed Mr Saunders’ interest in water security and hoped he would join her calls for more dams to be built.

“It’s a shame Mr Saunders didn’t make his voice heard in the 868 days it took his government to give Wide Bay Burnett locals the confidence they needed in restoring Paradise Dam’s wall,” Ms Frecklington said.

“But yet again, Labor is trying to distract from the major issue, that is, this government’s failure to build new dams,” she said.

“Rather than a pipeline to take water away from the people of Bundaberg and Wide Bay, we need the government to invest in new dams for Queensland.

“The only way to achieve water security is through increased water storage

Paradise Dam sits in the electorate of Colin Boyce, who will run for the seat of Flynn at the upcoming federal election.

And while he gave credit to Mr Saunders for raising the issue of water security, he thought the Maryborough MP would find it hard to garner support for the proposed pipeline.

THE volunteers at the Whistle Stop Museum have been hard at work servicing the Mary Ann steam train in readiness for this weekend’s ‘Sunday in the Park’.

They removed the water tank and gained access to some of the gears below to restore a few pieces, replace anything that had corroded or worn, and then given her a polish ready for another 20 years of service.

They have asked their mother to move into a single-person unit. She refused.

I know of a single lady that lives in a 3-bedroom commission house.

Two of the rooms are completely empty.

The lady has been there since the children were young.

Now they have all grown up and are living in houses

A Housing Commission representative has asked if she would move. She refuses.

There must be hundreds of single people living in 2& 3-bedroom commission houses, which will not move to a single-person unit.

In my opinion, the Housing Commission law should be changed.

Catholics celebrate 150 years of St Mary’s Church JAY FIELDING MARYBOROUGH’S Catholic community celebrated a special anniversary this month – 150 years since the first mass was held at St Mary’s Catholic Church.

A special mass held to mark the occasion provided a moment of solidarity and joy for less than a fortnight after they faced the challenge of flooding.

Brisbane Auxiliary Bishop Ken Howell led the mass, assisted by Dr Adrian Farrelly, episcopal vicar for the North Country Deanery, and Father Lucius Edomobi, the current parish priest at St Mary’s.

Other clergy participating included former priests who spent time in the parish in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Fr Leo Burke and Fr Denis Martin.

Retired Bishop Brian Finnigan made the trip from Brisbane to attend as did Nigerian priests serving in the Brisbane archdiocese alongside Fr Edomobi.

Bishop Howell’s homily included the history of the parish from the 1850s.

After three years of building, St Mary’s was officially opened on February 4, 1872.

Missionary priest Fr Paul Tissot, from a small French Order of the Augustinians of the Assumption, celebrated the first mass for 500 parishioners, and the church has stood as a beacon of faith since.

Apologies were received from former parish priests Fr George Joseph, Fr Paul

Kelly and Fr Anthony Mellor, as well as Fr Mark Percival, who was ordained in St Mary’s.

Rita Lynch, the church organist for the last 55 years, led a 16-member choir, and nine altar boys and girls served during the mass.

A slideshow presented before and after the mass highlighted significant changes to the appearance of St Mary’s over the past century and a half, as well as photos of past parishioners, and significant events including baptisms and weddings.

The presentation was assembled by parishioner and historian Stephen McGinley, who will continue adding photos as they are contributed for display on the parish website.

Bishop Howell blessed a 150th anniversary memorial plaque near the entrance looking up the church’s freshly repainted Marian statue and statue of a rooster.

The rooster is a tribute to Fr Tissot and his French heritage. Added as a church feature in 1936, it is now the emblem of the parish.

In January, St Mary’s

escaped the flooding that inundated Maryborough’s central business district.

The flood peaked two steps below the parish office, which contains valuable documents, records and equipment.

The first Catholic services in Maryborough were held in 1852 in the house of the local chief constable, and a timber church was opened on the present site of St Mary’s in 1858.

The present landmark building was completed in stages.

The original section, opened in 1872, was designed by renowned architect Charles Tiffin of Brisbane, who also designed the Maryborough Post Office and Bond Store, as well as the main wing of Queensland’s Parliament.

From 1884-85, the nave was extended by three bays and a large chancel was added to the design of F.D.G. Stanley of Brisbane.

Finally, in 1936, the length of the nave was again increased, and north and south chancels were added, along with sacristies, confessionals and a baptistry, to the design of noted local architect P.O.E. Hawkins.

The architecture of John Smith Murdoch

by FRASER COAST MAYOR GEORGE SEYMOUR WALKING around the Maryborough CBD is a wonderful experience for those with an interest in architecture.

We have many examples here of the work Australia’s most accomplished architects.

The council is currently undertaking restoration works on one of the most unique and interesting of these buildings: the Maryborough Customs House.

We have stripped back over 30 layers of paint to the original interior décor and are returning it to be closer to its original state.

The Customs House and adjacent residence were built in 1899 to replace the earlier buildings which had been badly damaged by the record 1893 flood.

These two similar buildings were the creation of a very gifted architect, John Smith Murdoch.

At the time Murdoch was working for the Queensland Government, but a few years later he transferred to the Federal Government where he would play an instrumental role in designing the young

nation’s capital.

Murdoch was a member of the reviewing board for the national capital design competition, which was won by Walter Burley Griffin in 1912. Whilst it was Walter’s name on the competition papers, his wife Marion was equally responsible.

Canberra was certainly an odd choice to start a planned city; it was a dusty landscape dotted with sheep stations; chosen principally for its equal distance from Melbourne and Sydney.

Griffin and Murdoch eventually fell out, partly over Griffin’s belief that Murdoch was one of the departmental officers who was hostile to his capital design.

Like the formal façade of our Customs House, Murdoch and his government team represented tradition, precedent, duty and pragmatism.

Meanwhile, the Griffins, who began their careers working with Frank Lloyd Wright, were more free-thinking and anti-establishment.

Murdoch disliked the artificial layout of Griffin’s design and felt the capital

should follow the natural contours of the landscape.

He thought much of it was a waste of public funds.

Griffin’s plans for town layout were implemented, with Murdoch to provide the designs for individual buildings.

A Royal Commission was even held into the antagonism and the men never spoke again after falling out.

Despite this, Canberra has turned out quite well.

Murdoch was responsible for many of the early iconic Canberra buildings which now define its character.

Perhaps Murdoch’s best known building is the first Parliament House in Canberra.

In 1923, Murdoch was given the task of designing a provisional parliament house that could be used until a suitable design and sufficient funds could be found for a permanent building.

Murdoch’s stripped classical design for provisional Parliament House reflected his training in Glasgow, earlier work in Australia, and visits to parliamentary buildings in London, Berlin, Paris, Vienna and Washington.

While both functional and economical, the symmetrical structure was symbolic of Australia’s democratic bicameral parliament and was sympathetic to Canberra’s natural and built environments Whilst it was envisaged that it would be a temporary parliament, this “provisional” building was in fact used until the new parliament was opened in 1988.

Murdoch was known as a workaholic and never married. He had a dry and quiet personality and was frugal in professional and private life.

Remarkably for someone so accomplished and so important to our national history, there are only two known photographs of him, and he is not looking towards the camera in either of them.

Together with the Griffins, he defined the look and feel of Canberra with his classical designs.

So too, the corner of Richmond and Wharf Streets here in Maryborough will always stand in testament to the creativity and skill of one of the great Australian architects: John Smith Murdoch.

Fest steams ahead in 2022 JAY FIELDING

A MARYBOROUGH event is among 40 recipients of a funding boost worth almost $20,000 in the Queensland Government’s latest round of Engaging Science Grants.

The annual STEAMfesta, which began in 2019, aims to inspire imagination and creativity under the theme of STEAM – science, technology, engineering, art and maths.

Science Minister Megan Scanlon the grants supported events and activities that inspired students to study STEM subjects, promote STEM careers, and engage the wider community to increase awareness of the science happening in Queensland.

LOCAL Share the Dignity coordinator Clare Winter is hoping that this year’s drive is bigger and better than ever.

STEAMfesta received $19,990 for its “STEAMfesta Robotique and Battle at the Brolga”.

The project will feature a series of interactive workshops with the goal of developing skills in costumery, robotics, 3D printing, futuristic gadgetry and Arduino programming (the building of components for digital devices).

“The Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist has allocated more than $2 million in Engaging Science Grants to 189 grant recipients since 2016 with more than half of these supported projects located in regional areas,” she said.

Queensland Chief Scientist Professor Hugh Possingham said the grants help expand the opportunities to participate in local science events as well as citizen science projects to help

scientists collect data.

“This participation will enable more Queenslanders to value science for some of the many things it does – expanding cultural horizons, improving public debate, creating jobs and protecting the environment,” Prof Possingham said.

“We live in a complex world, and it’s vital people can discern fact from fiction when they make decisions,” he said.

“It’s also important that young people are inspired to study STEM subjects and pursue STEM careers, as we know Queensland has to import many of its highly-skilled workers from overseas.”

The Dignity Drive runs for the month of March where hygiene products can be donated at collection points at Woolworths and Australian Hearing in Lennox Street, or you can donate $2 at the checkout to go towards supplying products to homeless women.

Clare was delighted to announce the charity’s very first official Patron, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young PSM Governor of Queensland.

“This patronage shows how far this charity has come in the past seven years.” she said.

As well as donating collection pads, tampons, menstrual cups and incontinence items, Clare is also asking that people sign the petition to have feminine hygiene products supplied for free in hospitals.

“Not every women who’s

in hospital has someone visiting them to supply these things.” she said.

“These donations provide dignity to those most vulnerable.”

Sanderson’s vision for 2022 CRAIG WINTER COUNCILLOR Daniel Sanderson’s vision for 2022 is clear.

His focus on the CBD and it’s improvement for both shoppers and businesses over the past few years has seen significant works completed including new footpaths and streetscapes which were badly needed.

Earlier in the year, we asked Councillors about the plans over the next few months, a story which was unfortunately overshadowed by the floods and subsequent clean up. Here is Mr Sanderson’s original response.

“It will complete the replacement of drainage infrastructure from Kent Street to Alice Street,” Cr Daniel Sanderson said.

“The work was identified during our annual inspection program which indicated that the system was failing.

It is anticipated that the work will start this year

and take 14 weeks to complete.

Cr Sanderson said every effort would be made to keep the footpaths open and traffic flowing during the project.

“To lessen the impact on businesses, as much of the work as possible will be undertaken at night (6pm and 6am),” he said.

“The aim is for Lennox Street to remain open at night but reduced to one-lane and one-way for south bound vehicles.

Provision will be made for access to restaurants and businesses operating after hours.

“Lennox Street will revert to two-way traffic during the day. Ellena Street will remain open during night works.”

Free bus service for Maryborough students FRASER Coast Anglican College has introduced a free door to door return bus service in conjunction with Wide Bay Transit, for FCAC students travelling from Maryborough to the College.

“We recognise that travelling from Maryborough to Hervey Bay and back each day can be problematic for families to arrange around work and other commitments.

“By offering this free bus service, we aim to eliminate that problem for them,” said Principal, Mr Joe Wright.

“We are excited to be partnering with Wide Bay Transit to make this service available for our Maryborough families.” he added.

Level heads needed The Queensland Government is proposing costly changes to the national building code, but first they need to stop and think of the impacts.

The major changes to the national building code relate to Accessible Housing and Energy Efficiency, but the Queensland Government is not fully measuring the impact.

It’s true that future provisions are needed for the elderly and people with disabilities, and to ensure more sustainable homes into the future, but the benefits won’t be realised if not introduced properly.

The Queensland Government needs to give serious consideration to the following issues upfront; • How will they address all the technical problems raised by the industry?

• What about the significant new timepressures and costs they will force onto builders and homeowners?

MARYBOROUGH Hospital’s dementia and geriatrics ward has been forced into quarantine following an outbreak of coronavirus.

Mr Lewczuk said WBHHS was continuing to test patients in the ward.

A patient tested positive during rapid antigen testing late on Tuesday, February 15.

Staff responded by carrying out testing throughout the ward, with a further five patients and seven workers testing positive.

As of Monday morning, 13 patients and 17 hospital staff had tested positive.

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service COVID-19 response lead Michael Lewczuk said 10 of the patients had been transferred to the Hervey Bay Hospital COVID-19 Ward and three to the Bundaberg Hospital COVID-19 Ward.

“Positive staff are isolating at home,” Mr Lewczuk said.

“Other staff who are considered close contacts are quarantining at home,”

“Any patient who tests positive will be transported to a WBHHS COVID-19 ward,” he said.

“WBHHS will keep the quarantine in place as long as it is required and will end the quarantine based off the advice of clinicians and public health experts.”

Australian Workers’ Union Central District secretary Tony Beers accused WBHHS of not protecting staff from coronavirus.

“There’s going to be outbreak of omicron in a hospital setting – but it ’s the things they put in place to protect the workers, that’s what’s missing,” he said.

“Safety measures haven’t been put in place for the additional risks that come with working in a hospital environment, they’re not being supplied PPE (personal protective equipment), and management here won’t even get them fit tested for proper mask wearing in

hospital,” he said.

“Our members have been told to buy their own masks. It’s outrageous.”

Mr Beers said members, who gathered outside the hospital to protest working conditions, had put into place resolutions to ban unsafe work and entering areas where PPE had not been provided.

“It’s not good enough our

members are treated like second-class citizens.”

Mr Lewczuk said WBHHS had a good supply of PPE, which was available to all staff.

“WBHHS has robust PPE policies to support staff to follow PPE requirements,” he said.

“The situation continues to be closely monitored.”

45 years of service celebrated FRASER Coast Libraries technician Karen Lynch welcomed users to Maryborough Library when it first opened its doors 45 years ago and she’s still warmly greeting visitors today.

Ms Lynch began her career at Maryborough’s School of Arts subscription library for paying members in 1975.

She joined the council in 1977 after it built the library in Bazaar Street, offering community members the use of books, newspapers and magazines for free.

In 1977, you could buy a tube of toothpaste for 45 cents, Colleen McCullough’s The Thorn Birds was at the top of the New York Times bestseller list, the first Star Wars film was released and Malcolm Fraser won a second term as Prime Minister.

At that time, Maryborough Library was on a single level and operated with a card system.

“Every book had a card in it and the customer had a card, so we’d take the card out of the book and put it with the customer’s card when they borrowed a book,” she said.

Ms Lynch said the computerisation of the library system in 1990 was a massive change, one of many developments she had seen over the years including the introduction of large print books in 1978, the temporary relocation of the library across the street in 1996 so the second storey could be added, and the amalgamation of councils in the region in 2008.

She said Maryborough had never been without a library and she marvelled at the range of items available for borrowing now, from toys and jigsaw puzzles to DVDs and eAudiobooks.

“Change is a good thing,” Ms Lynch said.

“We’re always moving forward.”

During her career, she said she’d seen children who had visited the library with their parents, return as adults with their own children.

“It’s unbelievable to think of where the time has gone,” Ms Lynch said.

One of the tasks she said she had enjoyed the most was recommending new authors to people and then seeing them continue to

borrow books by that same writer.

Ms Lynch said she loved reading herself and kept adding to her own list of books to read so she didn’t imagine she’d ever be finished.

Regional librarian Tara Webb said Ms Lynch’s dedication to libraries was extraordinary and congratulated her on 45 years of service with the council.

“Karen is the backbone of our day-to-day operation in Maryborough and we appreciate her continuing commitment to delivering a high-quality and progressive library service to our community.”

Pool remains closed for post-flood repairs

WORK is continuing at the Maryborough Aquatic Centre on a range of repairs required after the flood, with the centre expected to reopen by 30 April 2022.

Cr Daniel Sanderson said the Maryborough Aquatic Centre suffered considerable damage as a result of the recent flood with repairs required right throughout the centre.

“While a lot of work has already been done, there is still a lot to do before the centre can open to the public again,” he said.

“We appreciate the community wants to get back in the swim of things, but it’s not as simple as just emptying the pool and filling it back up again. We need to ensure the entire facility is safe.

“The centre has been cleaned thoroughly and Council has disposed of items that were contaminated or damaged beyond repair. All pool plant and equipment required to operate the pools has been reinstated and is awaiting testing once pools have been refilled and are ready to filter once again.

“The 50-metre pool has had the wet deck grating and new backstroke flag holders reinstated. This pool is close to being refilled with 1.6 million litres of water but is awaiting silicon works.

“The 16-metre indoor program pool has been reinstated, including the wet deck grating. This pool has also been refilled and the water treated to the standard required for swimming.”

Cr Paul Truscott said the 25 metre pool needed significant work, with the whole pool to be regrouted, while the wet deck grating and some tiles need to be replaced.

“Work has started on repairs in other areas of the centre such as the internal toilets and change facilities, the external showers, the kiosk, first aid room, office and CCTV area,” he said.

“Work will start soon to restore the toddlers’ water play area, the gym and the club meeting room.

“Council understands the community is eager for the aquatic centre to reopen and we are working as quickly as we can with contractors to get all the

a decision was made to expand the pilot from supporting 20 to 50 schools to provide a GP service to their secondary students.

“The initiative will ensure

all of our students have access to critical care and referral services to the already impressive health resources available at our school.” said Principal Simon Done.

The school has partnered with local provider Galangoor Duwalami Primary Health Care Service with a GP on site every Tuesday by appointment.

KELSI is a 2yr old Kelpie cross that is looking for her special someone.

Kelsi has come so far from being the scared and defensive girl she was when she first arrived here at the refuge.

After 10 months of training and love she has become a whole different girl.

Kelsi still needs training to bring her to her

She will also come with Jacqui Zakar consults and follow ups to help with her progress specifically for reactivity.

Mary and Susan – Sister Rivers of the Fraser Coast LINDSAY TITMARSH SINCE European settlement, the Mary River has experienced numerous floods - the largest of these being in 1893.

It was then that the 17-year-old wooden structure, the ‘Maryborough Bridge’, built across the river

between Maryborough and Tinana, was destroyed by floodwater.

‘the ride of a lifetime’, and ending up well downstream, all survived.

Not only did the massive bridge get washed away, but so did numerous men who were on it while attempting to clear large amounts of flood debris being washed against the railings.

The next big flood in Maryborough, which occurred in 1955, also caused death and destruction.

The following information was supplied by former Maryborough surveyor, the late, Don Matheson.

After the 1955 floodwater had drained away, the ‘thinkers of the day’ came up with a plan to minimise future floods in the city.

They realized that the Mary River upstream from the city, as well as below it, flowed around very long bends, it did not travel directly to the coast.

For those who are committed to shredding, Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) Senior Physiotherapist Cheryl Costello said a strength training regime was the key to overall health and performance.

You may want support if you have noticed changes in the way you think or feel which cause problems in your day-to-day life.

If you think you need help, it’s best to get support and treatment as soon as you can.

“If your Resolution is to increase or improve your fitness, strength training is a great place to start,” Ms Costello said.

“Regular strength or resistance training is very low risk, especially if guided by a health or fitness industry professional.

“Increasing your strength improves your health at a cellular, metabolic, cardiovascular and neurological level by increasing your energy levels and improving your sleep, as well as reducing inflammation, stress and illness.

“Increased strength also gives you greater power, balance, agility, speed, endurance, and flexibility.”

Ms Costello said strength training relied on the principle of progressive overload, which was a steady increase in training stress.

“To continue to get stronger, we must continue to increase the exertion of the exercises we do,” she said.

“Increasing exertion could mean you increase the

Ms Costello said it was common for people to experience delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after strength training, particularly if they were new to the exercise.

“DOMS is a type of muscle strain injury resulting from applying too much training stress,” she said.

“DOMS usually has a pain-free period of 12 to 24 hours and then the muscle soreness peaks between 24 to 72 hours. The delay is due to an increase in inflammation at that time.

SPORT Wilmshurst earns Australia squad selection

BRENDAN BOWERS WHEELCHAIR Basketball: Maryborough wheelchair basketballer Emeral Wilmshurst has been selected for the Australian Devils under 25 wheelchair basketball squad.

After taking up the sport in 2019, Wilmshurst has been working hard and progressing under the guidance of Michael Oxley and the Fraser Coasters Wheelchair Basketball program.

“I feel pretty good,” Wilmshurst said.

In January, receiving a phone call and e-mail cemented her desire to keep pushing with the sport.

“It is such a fun sport it draws you in. It is so inclusive, and I like playing,” she said.

She credits her success to the camaraderie of the Fraser Coasters environment and how they all support each other.

She is not resting on her laurels on making the squad with a final team yet to be selected.

“We have zoom training sessions, and I will have to travel to the Australian Institute of Sport for camps before the final team is selected,” She has set her long term goal to play in the Paralympics.

Coach and Fraser Coasters coordinator Michael Oxley believes her selection is a direct result of the hard work she has put in.

“She works really hard with extra training sessions, and she was scouted at an event in

January,” Oxley said.

Oxley believes it reinforces that if you work hard, you can get rewards.

“It is just another step in her journey and proves that living in regional centres is no barrier to achieving higher honours,” he said.

COVID has made it hard to get the squad together.

The goal is to for her make the team and play in the World Championships in 2023.

“I just need to keep working hard and see where it takes me,” she said.

Doon Villa take plenty Good bites abound of positives out of Australia Cup loss with a wide variety of fish being landed.

Sticking to the Rivers and Creeks along the mainland such as Tuan, Maaroom and Poona Creeks or the Mary, Susan and Burrum Rivers has really been the pick of the spots for local boaties over the past couple of weeks, and they haven’t been disappointed

BRENDAN BOWERS FOOTBALL: The young Doon Villa Magpies gained valuable experience after their 5-0 loss to Across the Waves on Saturday night.

Playing in round three of the Australia Cup, the Maryborough team knew they would be in for a tough contest against last year’s men’s Wide Bay Premier League champions.

The Magpies were not overawed about facing their Bundaberg opponents.

They matched them for the entire first half, with the teams going to halftime 0-0.

Across the Waves failed to take their chances in the first half, and shortly after the break, they found the back of the net.

The young Magpies dropped a little in confidence. The experienced Waves outfit seized their opportunities and rolled over the top of Doon Villa.

The match finished 5-0 with Bryce Hibberd and Cory Leggett each collecting a double, and Nicholas Chatfield also found the back of the net.

Doon Villa coach Dan Rapps took plenty of positives out of the performance.

“They are an experienced quality side who once they got the first goal sensed that our heads had dropped and put it to us,” Rapps said.

He believes the loss can only benefit the team.

“It was a good experience for our young team to have before the season

Good sized Summer Whiting, Silver Bream and Flathead are being landed for those who are walking the sand flats at low tide either collecting fresh bait like yabbies or flicking a soft plastic or hard bodied lure.

And in the deeper water anglers have been getting Mangrove Jack, Barramundi, Grunter, Black Bream and Threadfin Salmon with live bait being the preferred method.

German Creek has been one of the favoured locations with Anglers casting soft plastics or hard bodied lures into the drains on the making tide and landing quality Threadfin Salmon and Barramundi or fishing the deeper holes and catching some quality Grunter around the 50cm mark.

Sneaking out early on a good day and heading across the Strait towards the island has also been paying off with our protected reefs and ledges producing mixed bags of quality reef fish such as Parrot, Grassy Sweetlip, Mosses Perch and Cod.

Still lots of reports rolling in of quality mud crab being caught in the Mary and in the creeks in the Strait. Well worth soaking a pot.

We have had a couple of prawn reports and for those willing to put in the effort- Swan, Tuan and Maaroom Creeks have been producing the goods with the average size prawn around 4 inches.

For the fresh water fisherman there’s been plenty of fresh water action as well Tinana, Tiaro and The Mary are all reporting Bass and Sooties.

BRAG BOARD First up is Brodie with a beautiful Black Spot Tusk Fish (Bluey) it weighed in at 7.6kg. Tyson had a great day chasing the Barra. This one went 85cm. Andrew landed this 1.6kg Flathead using a live mullet. Cuteness overload – Alexia-Jayne was all smiles landing her first ever fish.
