Avon: Vibrant and Growing by Ken McEntee

A

ffordable housing, convenient access to highways, abundant shopping and plenty of things to do… That’s what has made Avon one of the fastest growing cities in Ohio, says Brian Salem, Avon resident and owner of The Salem Team of Keller Williams Realty. “Avon is definitely a city that is in the growth mode,” Salem says of the Eastern Lorain County town of 21,000. “There has been growth in commercial and retail development along with housing construction.” Avon’s affordable housing stock and family-friendly developments are the main reasons so many families are moving in, Salem says. “Nice, newly-constructed homes are available at a very fair price point – in the low- to mid-$200’s,” he says. “I’m a fan of a big, open-style floor plan and I found exactly what I was looking for in Avon.” Plenty of shopping is available at retail areas like Avon Commons, an 800,000 square foot shopping and community complex on Detroit Road near Route 83, just south of I-90.

Along with restaurants and retailers of all sizes, Avon Commons features a festival market place, a recreational pathway and a gazebo with a surrounding amphitheater for community entertainment events. “Avon Commons is just five minutes away from me,” Salem says. “Crocker Park, in Westlake, is just 10 minutes away. With convenient highway access you can get anything you need in minutes.” Less than two miles east of Avon Commons, on I-90, a new interchange being built at Lear-Nagle Road marks the latest wave of new development. The interchange is expected to open in late 2012 or early 2013. New development in the area will center around Cleveland Clinic’s new Richard E. Jacobs Health Center, located off Nagle Road. The $97.9 million, 190,000-square-foot center, which was expected to open in December, will include four operating rooms and four procedure rooms and will employ 400 physicians, nurses and support staff.

About 212 acres of undeveloped land around the interchange is owned by the Jacobs Group. The western side of town, at the Route 611/I-90 interchange, has come alive with the 2009 opening of All Pro Freight Stadium and the 2010 opening of the French Creek Family YMCA. While serving as the home of the Lake Erie Crushers professional baseball team, the stadium also hosts the Avon High School team and other high school and college teams. Michael Keefe, account executive for the Crushers, said locals have enthusiastically supported the minor league team

and other events hosted at the stadium. The stadium has hosted a concert by country music star Alan Jackson along with an annual Octoberfest and other events. “We have a good working relationship with a lot of business in the city,” Keefe says. “You can have dinner at a local restaurant, come to a Crushers game, then go out to other local establishments afterward. We all benefit.” The 67,000 square foot French Creek YMCA branch is a state-of-the-art family recreation facility that features an eight-lane indoor pool with spectator seating, an aerobicsmultipurpose studio, child-care center, family gym, sauna, whirlpool and wellness center. The center’s $14 million facility was made possible through a collaboration between the Greater Cleveland YMCA and the city of Avon.

There’s No Place Quite Like Avon Lake by Ken McEntee

G

erry Vogel says he moved to Avon Lake to be a part of one of Ohio’s finest libraries. The newcomer quickly found himself literally in the middle of the town’s history. Shortly after taking his position as assistant director of the Avon Lake Public Library, he took on the task of collecting historical photographs. “The Avon Lake Historical Society wanted to do a book, but there was no official collection of photos, so it was a challenge,” Vogel recalls. “In almost three years we were able to compile more than 1,000 photos from people in the community.” Avon Lake (Images of America), published in August 2011, tells a lot about the history of the area that the Erie Indians called “Xeuma.” The project taught Vogel a great deal about his new home. “It was a community that was transformed by the

Lake Shore Electric Railway (1901-1938),” he explains. “It went from being a completely agricultural community to a recreational community with tourists cabins.” Today, recreation remains one of the city’s premier attractions. Along with about 220 acres of land designated for parks and playgrounds, Lake Erie provides the city’s largest playground. “Most cities have neighbors on all sides,” Vogel notes. “We have a lake on one side.” Lake Erie, says Brian Salem, owner of The Salem Team of Keller Williams Realty, is Avon Lake’s major draw. “People love to be near the lake,” he says. “Avon Lake also has some great parks. With the addition of the new aquatic center, the city has a lot of great

opportunities available for families and people of all ages.”

usually see in a community this size,” he says. “People come here from outside the city because nobody has the unique collections and services we have here. I think the library really is the glue that holds the community together. It’s the place where people from all kinds of organizations meet to get things done.”

The Ellen Trivanovich Aquatic Center, which opened in 2010, was awarded first place that year among Ohio’s recreational facilities in the $2.5 million-plus range by the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association. The facility features a lazy river, a “spray ground,” zero-depth entry, two 25-foot water slides and a six foot family slide. With I-90 carrying a wave of new development south into neighboring Avon, Avon Lake is more off the beaten path than when the town was known mostly for its cottages and vineyards. But that’s the way many of the city’s 24,000 residents like it. “It’s quiet here,” says Vogel, who lives in Avon Lake with his wife and two-year-old daughter. “But there are a lot of interesting things going on. And we’re close to a lot of amenities in other cities.”

Among the unique attractions at the library is Discovery Works, an interactive play and learning area where people of all ages can explore a variety of multi-sensory experiences to enlighten and enhance their lives. “There is nothing really quite like it,” Vogel insists. Many residents feel the same about Avon Lake. Avon Lake Public Library (above). Photo: Scott F. W. Hughes.

It was the chance to work at the Avon Lake Public Library that brought him to town. “This is not a library that you

iving within their means seems to be so easy for some people, while others struggle with it their entire lives. The goal is to get the most out of life, while still planning for future needs. Here are a few guidelines to live by: 1. Maximize your income through training and education. 2. Always be saving! Increase the amount whenever your income increases. 3. Don’t spend what you just saved. Eliminate easy access. 4. Keep a budget. Spending without a budget is like flying blind. 5. Determine the difference between luxuries and necessities. 6. Avon Local School District Excellence in Education

T

he Avon Local School District is the only school district in Lorain County to earn an “Excellent” or “Excellent with Distinction” rating on the state of Ohio’s report card for eleven consecutive years. One of the truly interesting things about this success is that while we enjoy a high academic rating, we educate our students at a fiscally reasonable cost to the taxpayers ($7,706 per student). In fact, that spending per pupil ranks us 595 lowest out of 613 public school districts in the state for FY 2010. Last year, the district educated 3,978 students, and as of Sept. 1st, our enrollment is 4,073 students. Further, the district is projecting an additional 500 students by the 2015 school year, and 1,000 students by the 2020 school year. The challenge is to continually improve the educational opportunities available to our students as state funding for the district continues to evaporate, while managing the growth, and being fiscally responsible to the community. The Avon Local School District is the third fastest growing public school district in the state and the district has successfully planned for the increased enrollment in the schools. A new Avon High School was opened in 1997, and a large academic and fine arts addition was completed in 2008, to make it one of the premier high school educational facilities in the state. Heritage North Elementary School was opened in the fall of 2002, to educate fifth and six grade students and Heritage South Elementary School was opened in the fall of 2005, to educate third and fourth grade students. Avon East Elementary School has been enlarged and updated to educate first and second grade students.

Avon High School, grades 9 – 12, offers an array of technological support, a diversified curriculum, and students are immersed in leading edge opportunities required for successful participation in the global society. In addition, students can take courses at Lorain Community College and have those courses count for both high school and college credit. Avon Middle School, grades 7 & 8, offer a wide array of learning opportunities and students can take courses that count toward high school credit. Avon High School (above) and the Avon Middle School. Photos: Alexandra Kaldy.

Heritage North Elementary School is a state-of-the-art technologicallyadvanced elementary school where children maintain the innocence associated with an elementary school while providing a program designed to enable them to have a rigorous and successful academic experience. Heritage South Elementary School includes support for students who need intervention as well as those who need enrichment. Students frequently complete projects that integrate the most up-to-date technology, including lessons via Interactive Video Distance Learning with classrooms and/or instructors in locations across Ohio, the nation and sometimes the world. Avon East Elementary School is a child-centered school that maintains the belief that every student possesses talent that is continually nurtured. The staff at Avon East creates academic excellence through high expectations and a diverse array of curriculum offerings. continued on page 12 ► 2012 Avon & Avon Lake, Ohio Community Guide

Avon Village School is where it all begins for the public school student in Avon. Serving Kindergarten students and housing the Educational Service Center’s Special Needs Preschool, it manages to retain its small town atmosphere while offering a wide variety of learning opportunities to its students. In addition to the academic facilities being upgraded, the athletic facilities have also been recently renovated. In 2002, two new softball fields and 6 tennis courts were built at the high school. In 2004, new bleachers and lights were installed at the athletic stadium that houses football, soccer, track and baseball. In 2007, the district installed a new track and a turf field for football and soccer and renovated the varsity baseball field, while enlarging the parking lot. Other improvements included a new 4,000-square-foot weight room and an addition to the wrestling room at the high school.

F

ormer Cleveland State University President Michael Schwartz was aware of the need and desire for people to return to college to complete their university degrees. He also knew that these individual’s schedules did not permit them to take the conventional path to higher education.

All of the above would not be accomplished without the ongoing support of the community. That support is greatly appreciated. Jim Reitenbach, Superintendent Avon Local Schools In July 2003, Dr. Schwartz inaugurated the Cleveland State University West Center Extended Campus in Westlake, Ohio. This campus helped make higher education accessible for the non-traditional student. The CSU West Center, celebrating its eighth year, continues to serve students in 13 communities in Northeast Ohio, including Avon and Avon Lake. Over 17,000 students have enrolled in courses at the CSU West Center. The West Center offers degrees in Business for both the Graduate and Undergraduate student; College of Education Superintendence Licensure; Liberal Studies; Communications and core Undergraduate courses. The Center also offers Professional Development and Training and Development Certificate Programs.

Avon Lake City School District Offers Students Exciting Opportunities

A

von Lake City School District is an outstanding learning environment for all students. A belief in comprehensive education from pre-kindergarten to high school is the driving force behind Avon Lake City Schools. Opportunities for today’s students are exciting. Avon Lake District Office (above) and Avon Lake High School Stadium. Photos: Deborah M. Hill (above) and Scott F.W. Hughes.

Our focus on 21st century job-related and post-secondary ready academic skills creates multiple paths to success for students. Exemplary education practices, based on individual needs of students, create a learning environment which breeds success. High expectations for all students are evidenced in local assessments as well as in assessments at the state and national levels. All challenges, regardless of who set them, have been met and exceeded. Past standardized testing assesses a small part of Avon Lake’s programming. These assessments show that Avon Lake has been rated an excellent school system for the past eight consecutive years. Our ACT and SAT scores are above the state and national averages. The graduating class of 2011 was eligible for over $9,000,000 in scholarships and students were accepted into a wide variety of universities including many elite, top tier schools. Over 65% of the students graduated with college credit. Avon Lake City School District

was also named one of the “Best 100 School Communities in Music Education” in 2011 by the NAMM Foundation. Academics are just a part of what makes Avon Lake schools an outstanding place for kids. From pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, a wide variety of co-curricular and extracurricular activities are offered. Students can and do participate in fine arts, health, athletic and academic-related experiences. Participation in these activities is beneficial for all students involved. Hard work, dedication and support by staff, parents and the community have allowed students to win local, regional and state awards and to be part of a nationally-ranked music program that receives honors and accolades in every endeavor. Avon Lake City School District is an important part of the City of Avon Lake. Tradition holds the two together. Avon Lake City Schools offer a wonderful educational opportunity for children; the city of Avon Lake is a wonderful place to live and a wonderful place to raise a family. Together, all of the people who make up our city are proud to call Avon Lake home and are excited about the future of Avon Lake City Schools and our community. “Avon is a small hometown community and even with the growth, maintains that ‘small hometown’ feeling. The city has a good mixture of older traditional homes and newer modern homes. We have an excellent school system, and a wonderful athletic program. In 2011 our varsity football team played in the state championship game - congratulations to our Avon Eagles. As an Avon resident for more than 15 years, I enjoy the convenient shopping in Avon, Ohio. Along with North Ridgeville, and Avon Lake, Avon is one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the state of Ohio. Avon is definitely on the map!”

Chocolate & Your Health It’s more than wishful thinking — chocolate can be good for you. Studies show that eating dark chocolate may contribute to improved cardiovascular health. Packed with natural antioxidants, dark chocolate and cocoa sit in the same good-for-you category as green tea and blueberries. That’s because chocolate comes from cacao beans (or cocoa beans), which grow on the cacao tree and are full of natural plant nutrients. Most studies to date highlight dark chocolate’s health values because it has the highest percentage of cocoa solids, therefore more flavanol antioxidants. Visit Catherine’s Chocolates in Avon… your Westside chocolatier has chocolate and other candies for all occasions and holidays.

Places of Worship The Conservatory at the Miller Nature Preserve displays various plant specimens from all over the world in a unique recreation of their habitat. Follow the paths through the conservatory and enjoy the colorfully landscaped gardens including the orchid collection donated by Dr. Ibrahim Eren of Lorain, bromeliads, ferns, bonsai, desert plants, palms and cycads, and other tropical plants. The Visitor Center is free to visit and includes a gift shop, cafe, demonstration kitchen for culinary classes and outdoor event patio to enjoy warm summer evenings listening to local musicians. Many aspects of the facility have followed and incorporated some of the LEED (The Leadership in Energy and Environmental DesignGreen Building Rating System) guidelines to make it a ‘greenspace’. Some of the features utilized are water conservation, conserving construction materials, decreased heat emission, site design, and many aspects of energy conservation especially within the greenhouse itself. The Orchid Room is a beautiful café inside the visitor center at Miller Nature Preserve where you can enjoy lunch or an early dinner in the park. The menu includes an array of salads, soups, sandwiches and other delicious dishes made from fresh ingredients. Call 440-937-4545 for reservations for your small group for lunch or dinner.
