Martin Näf

I’m Martin, graduated in Architecture and Urban Planning at Mackenzie University, in 2015 in Brazil, and now studying for a master’s degree in Sustainable Urban Design in Lund Sweden. Always pursuit simple solution, trying to eliminate unnecessary pieces, and finding the beauty in the raw materials and in the architecture itself. Achieving something simple, is actually a very complex and hard task. Inside the office, I will be the one questioning and trying to improve the final product, calling for responsibilities and space to contribute more with the project. Not afraid to learn and put more effort in order to achieve better results.

RCM house Realized at : David Ito Arquitetura Model Residence for neighbourhood 120m² Ubatuba - SP - Brazil - 2015

The owner of a big piece of land in Ubatuba, came to us with the intention to build a model residence for a sustainable neighbourhood. Beside the very small budget, and hot wheatear during the whole year, the other big issue we had to face is that river nearby floods over the terrain during rain season. To match the requirement of a sustainable living, we stablished 3 criteria to follow. 1st, the materials must be found or produced nearby, and must be accessible to people in that area. 2nd, take most advantage of passive techniques as possible, and 3rd, the house must not interfere on the existing vegetation. The whole concept started with the idea that the house should be lifted from the ground to preserve the native vegetation, keep the house safe from the river water, and let the water infiltrate in the soil. In order to preserve a tree, the house divides in two elements, that solution also allowed every room in the house to get great incidence of natural sun light and the possibility of crossed ventilation. Ubatuba is a very rainy city, and we took advantage of that collecting water in the roof, and reusing it in the toilets. To protect the open facades from the sun, we used bamboo, a very resistant, cheap, and easy to grow material. Therefore, when it gets too damaged by the sun, it can be replaced and the old material can be recycled.

Meeting the residents desire to obtain large spaces in a light atmospheret large social area. The dining, living and television rooms are arranged in a single environment that is integrated to the gourmet terrace and kitchen. The 12 meter long ripped panel acts as a backdrop for all the social area. The hinged doors are camouflaged in the same panel, connecting the kitchen, the dining room and the door that gives access to the intimate area of the apartment, sheltering the entire wooden-clad entrance hall. The predominance of white walls, slatted panel, metal shelves, ceramics, corian countertops, curtains and the furniture, favored the optimal distribution of natural light, allowing the artificial lighting to be practically all indirect. The white surfaces are differentiated by their textures and reflections, and together with all the wood used, they form the ideal base to receive the desired colours. The way the lighting was designed enabled the absence of ceiling plaster in the rooms and bedrooms. Providing clear environments that have a higher ceiling and no points of light that pollute visually. The colourful environment in the apartment enhances the national culture, using traditional elements such as the tile and the ceramic panel signed by the artist Alexandre Mancini. The furniture and the vegetation are in perfect harmony with the colours used. The identity of the social area permeates the intimate wing, emphasizing the furniture for underwear in the closet, which has small colourful pivot doors alluding to the magic cube. The design of this furniture, as well as the dining table, carries the signature of the office.

BON Realised at : David Ito Arquitetura Private apartment remodeling Sao Paulo - SP - Brazil - 2017

The desire of the young couple from São Paulo was to live in a sophisticated apartment that would meet their functional needs, something that became specific due to the cats, family members. Instead of integrating the large balcony to the internal environments, it was decided to keep it in its original size, something unusual in the present day, but that proved of great importance for the day to day operation. With less space available for indoor environments, the idea of integrating the environments and the versatility of the furniture were key. Opening the kitchen to the living room came as an obvious idea, but there should be a possibility of closure. The problem was solved with sliding panels, which hide inside the walls of the toilet and service area, allowing the opening and closing of the kitchen. Following the same reasoning, the second dormitory was fragmented, to house a bookcase that serves as office and bar, as well as a futon that can serve as support for the office, as well as comfortably accommodate a routine visit of the couple. In this case, privacy is guaranteed with a thick curtain, which can be fully retracted and closed, to preserve it from cats. The sophistication is due to the furniture and the intensive use of white and black, broken only by the wooden shelf.

Living³ “Living Cubic” Experimental habitation module Individual academic project - 5ft semester - 2012

On this project we were challenged to design a habitation on a 6x6x6m space, the main goal is not to solve the internal space, but to explore the facade ,building system ,interaction with the exterior space, internal comfort techniques and also to be able to show it on a physical model. A hollowed pyramid module protects the facades, the idea is that it can be produced in large scale, by simply cutting and folding a metal or wood sheet, and later screwed in to a metal structure. The hollowed pyramid shape of the module makes the light come in more softly, and create a light and shade effect, due to the many different planes. The facade module is also foldable (flower fold), allowing the resident to control light intensity. On the ceiling, the same module let the hot air escape the house. On the west side of the habitation, where the sun sets, is a double facade that allows airflow through it, protecting the house from the excessive summer heating. The house is made in a wood frame system that once protected by the facade module, can be closed only by glass panels and windows. The inner glass layer and the sliding doors on the ground floor, creates an integrated space with the exterior.

Urban Arts Center Individual academic project - 2015 - Graduation Project São Paulo - SP - Brazil

Located on Augusta Street, within the Baixo Augusta region, the Urban Arts Center aims to capture the region’s major artistic and cultural influences, and provide a quality venue for them to develop, taking into account the ongoing transformation process that took place in the last years The arts center consists of 2 blocks, one that faces the inner square, houses classrooms, dance halls, and music studios, a public library with independent access, and a large auditorium that can receive internal presentations or open to the square. On the corner between Rua Augusta and Peixoto Gomide, the other building houses large ateliers. All school uses are connected by the existing building, which serves as vertical circulation and administrative area. The main idea of the public square is to host presentations from students of the arts school. It is possible to watch those presentations open theater in the grass bleachers, or to hold smaller events in the paved area. The commerce shops were relocated to the square interior, also integrating the old and abandoned tramway station. On the top of the classrooms block, there is a large area for a vegetable garden, with the food produced in the place it is possible to sell them on “fair days” in the square and cater to the residents and markets of the region.

Life, is just around the corner Sustainable Urban Design Master - LTH Individual academic project - 2017 Ystad - Sweden

The reclaim of the harbor area by the municipality of Ystad opens doors to new developments. But it also needs to address some old problems, like the scar in the urban fabric made by the railway, shortage of housing in the region and sea level rise protection. The concept of the corner, reminds us of the feeling of walking in the old center, where every corner can have a surprise. The new Harbor hides the sea in the new city, people have to enter and unveil its corners to get to the Waterfront area, using the silos as a guide. People in the new area must have easy access to structures that allow nature to be a part of life, as well as create policies and strategies so that the city is flexible and can adapt its use throughout time. A series of main connections guide people to the seafront promenade, and structuring them with blue and green structures, people can have easy access to nature as well as creating a support for biodiversity and take care of water management. City blocks design breaks the wind from the sea, but allow sunlight to reach the streets. Inside them, gardens can take care of rain water, and create a whole new green path in the Harbor. The city main routes have a flexible ground floor, disconnected from the upper floors, allowing the change of use according to the future needs.

Next station Sustainable Urban Design Master - LTH Individual academic project - 2017 BarkĂĽkra - Sweden

The area has a huge potential to be a new neighborhood next to Ă„ngelholm, and be part of the local economy. For this to happen, is important to make the area around the train Station well connected to the neighborhood streets, as well as both sided of the rail road, so the whole place can act as one. The rich nature in the area should also be used as a feature to develop the place value and identity, it can enhance the connections in the neighborhood, from the country side, passing to the forest and reaching the sea. In order for it to happen, the connections must come first, even if they are not at its full potential, they will give the area some unity. After that, the areas around the train station should start to grow, providing places to shops and public services, acting as economic drivers for the area. Along with this, the residences in the site edges should also be built, as they play an important role in the place Identity. As soon as the core of the neighborhood is established, the housing area can start to develop, they consist in clusters of row houses, organized along or around nature. This gives the area a huge integration with nature, and allows the existing biodiversity and animal life to develop. In the final phase the public spaces should be enhanced in order to create a sequence of spaces, leading all the way to the bath houses in the sea. Over the years, the space between the clusters of houses will be filled by the forest, giving the desired natural and wild character to the place, and allowing people and nature to live in a balanced way.

Flowing water UN habitat 2018 Competition team: Martin Eduard Näf / Fernando Camino Wuhan - China

Wuhan is a large and complex city, with potential to take even more advantage from its rivers. In order to satisfy the city’s needs, it is important to aim for a integrated solution, taking advantage of its unique location and resources. We were Inspired by the fact that one of Wuhan’s local songs, “Flowing water”, travels with NASA’s Voyager, which led us towards a proposal that develops around a new inner-city river. Along this structure comes a diverse urban space, combining different uses, from new housing projects to old industrial buildings recycle. Bringing water inside the city allows people to have contact with it and understand its importance. Every section of the new structure will gradually clean and filter the water through vegetation before giving it back to the Hanshui. The shape and course of this new river symbolizes the Yang-Tse River, as It aims to be a role model on how to deal with urban and river water structures.

A simple home for a complex need, smart and economic response to emergency housing. Made up of cheap, standard and local materials, the design revolves around light and interchangeable pieces cut on site, requiring little prefabrication. Wall, floor and roof structures are assembled separately, then easily put together. With simple tools and little training, a unit can be built by local workers or the new residents themselves. Adaptability is key. The floor structure is levelled to any given site (sloppy, muddy, sandy‌) thanks to adaptable legs. If needed, add-ons like extra insulation or base plates can complement the basic structure. A light PVC membrane shelters the unit from the elements. The design not only welcomes a family, it also supports a community. Modules are easily combined to create a village-like structure. Each unit includes a core with a shower, a toilet, a kitchen with gas and possibility to reuse rainwater. To ensure a decent and liveable space for all, the shapes allows to divide the house in two, separating day and night, and parents and kids when wanted. Simple solutions like curtains, foldable sofa bed or movable furniture offer an ergonomic and cost efficient space.
