‘Pets for Vets’ services VA opens new mental now available at the VA health building in Martinez By DAVID SCHOLZ Martinez Tribune MARTINEZ, Calif. – An enlarged home for serving the mental health needs of veterans who travel to the Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic in Martinez will mean more timely responses and greater access to programming. A ribbon cutting ceremony this past week officially opened the new $9.7 million Mental Health Clinic on the VA grounds that will provide an additional 10,400 square feet to care for veterans whose individual battles are continuing. The overall space now totals 16,000 square feet, more than double the prior space for the VA’s mental health interests. “The goal of our new clinic is to create a space with home-like qualities for our veterans,” said Tara Ricks, chief public affairs officer for the VA Northern California Health Care System. Gone are the bland, sterile-like institutional qualities that defined past treatment environments. Rather, “the building was VETERANS: Page 3

Officials await coroner’s report in death of Andre Parrilla

MARTINEZ, Calif. – Animals weren’t the only beneficiaries from a recent visit of the Animal Rescue Foundation’s (ARF) mobile clinic to the Martinez VA – their owners also received a lift of spirit. Among former service personnel who took advantage of ARF’s hospitality was Army E-4 specialist Al San-Miguel of Concord, who brought his two dogs, Ava and Hicks, for free treatment. San-Miguqel adopted Hicks from ARF. ARF’s Mobile Clinic performs wellness exams, gives vaccinations, installs micro chipping, and answers questions about basic pet wellness. “This is fantastic,’’ said San-Miguel, who acknowledged veterans find it hard to ask about services like those ARF provides. “I’m so happy to receive the help.’’ The mobile clinic will return to the VA June 24, July 8 and 22 ARF: Page 3

MARTINEZ, Calif. – Investigation into the death of 15-year-old Martinez teen Andre Parrilla continues as officials wait for a completed coroner’s report. On April 25, Parrilla was found unresponsive in a pool at a home in the 100 block of Hill Girt Ranch Road in unincorporated Martinez. Parrilla was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives from the Office of the Sheriff, who were assisted by the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office, conducted the investigation. Parrilla, a student at Alhambra High School at the time of his death, “had consumed alcohol, was unattended in the pool and drowned,” Sheriff’s Office officials stated in a recent emailed response to the Tribune. “It has been determined that drugs were not involved and there were no signs of foul play,” officials said.

MARTINEZ, Calif. – The Martinez Library’s Lunch at the Library program continues next week with Mayor Rob Schroder and Police Chief Manjit Sappal scheduled to serve as special guest readers. The local lunch program is designed to combat hunger and fill the summer nutrition gap among area youth as part of a statewide collaboration between the California Library Association and California Summer Meal Coalition to unite libraries and summer meal providers. “Many low-income children face

nutrient deficiencies when school closes for the summer break,” said Martinez Librarian Ruth Boyer. Lunch at the Library – the first time Martinez is hosting the summer program with the support of the Martinez Unified School District – is taking place Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 12-1 p.m. through Aug. 10. Special guest readers are part of a variety of free activities that include arts & crafts, Legos and movies that have been lined up for area youth. Wednesday, June 8 A mountain bike was left overnight at the Golden Vintage liquor store on Alhambra Ave-

nue. The person who left it there asked the clerk to watch the bike for five minutes and then realized he liked walking so much better and forgot his bicycle. At 10:48 a.m., a 6 foot tall man in his 20s was described as “very strange” as he was running around in the area between the Hot Dog Depot and the Amtrak station after emerging from the women’s restroom at the marina East Bay Regional Park. Ten minutes later, a blonde

woman in her 40s was seen walking westbound on the railroad tracks next to Muir Station Road while carrying a number of bags with her. At 1:39 p.m., a man reported that he was sprayed down with a hose and verbally abused while on Marina Vista Avenue. What a refreshing summer afternoon. Near 2 p.m., a driver was allegedly followed for two miles before the following car driver got out of her vehicle and yelled at the followed driver. At 5:14 p.m., a suspicious person was reported to have been wearing an orange jumpsuit while running across the Center Avenue freeway overpass and carrying a Pepsi soda. Probably just researching for a role in the hit Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black.”

o’clock in the morning. Move on dude. Do not be a creep. At 3:44 a.m., a man with stripes on his sleeves was talking to himself and looking into Green Street residents’ yards. At one home he stopped to punch a fence. A man, who was identified with a name that matches someone I went to high school with, refused to leave the front of the Buon Aroma liquor store after loitering at 9:12 a.m. A woman in a black sweater was disturbing the peaceful Amtrak station by yelling into the payphone at 9:32 a.m. I assume she was yelling at whomever had her cell phone because who uses a payphone nowadays.

Friday, June 10 Congratulations to the Class of 2016 for not being a total disappointment. I am so proud of all of you. At 10 a.m., a group of six juveniles were seen smoking and loitering on Tea Tree Court. Probably just re-enacting the musical “Grease.” A driver was cut-off on Arnold Drive around 12:40 p.m. Then the two drivers pulled over into the Home Depot parking lot where both drivers exited their vehicles and one punched the other in the stomach in the traditional way of handling driver disputes. Around 2:30 p.m., a trespasser was reported to have been running around inside the Amtrak station wearing gray hospital clothing.

Saturday, June 11 Near 10 a.m., a man inside a home on Pine Street fired a taser through a window at passersby; nobody was hit. At 6:42 p.m., a woman was passed out on Ward Street while wearing a wine stroll wristband. A drug deal allegedly took place behind the Walgreens on Alhambra Avenue at 9:40 p.m. The concerned citizen that made the report also pointed out that this has become a new “hot spot.” At 11:49 p.m., a transient was reportedly passed out with a bottle of alcohol in his hand at the Bank of America ATM on Morello Avenue. The following streets are where loud parties were reported on Saturday night alone: Francis Drive, Clear Creek Court, Scenic Avenue (where fireworks or gunshots were heard), Lake Park Court, Estudillo Street/Brookside Drive, Roanoke Drive/Baron Court and La Salle Street. Seven known parties in one night. It’s lit.

designed to reflect the aesthetics of the natural environment, with bright lighting features that stimulate the calming effects of the local landscape,” Ricks added. Veterans will experience a more streamlined intake process with the VA offering more appointment times. The facility will also have increased staff to triage individuals who walk-in and those with same day appointments. Expanded substance abuse programs designed for those who are chronically struggling with use and recovery issues will also be given greater attention at the enlarged facility. Additional resources for the facility’s Primary Care Mental Health Integration Program also will enable veterans to have greater access to behavioral mental health services. This will translate into more timely consultations between

mental health providers and primary care providers, and result in earlier treatment. Individual treatment and consultation services to be available include: Geriatric Psychiatry, Medication Management, Military Sexual Trauma, Post-traumatic stress, substance abuse and Suicide Prevention. Group treatment services include: Anger management, Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, Medication Compliance, Pain Management, Social Skills, Smoking Cessation and Stress Management. The June 13 ribbon cutting ceremony included remarks from David Stockwell, Director, VA Northern California Health Care System; Dr. Dave Chu, Behavioral Health Clinic Manager; and Dr. Jackson-Triche, Former VISN 21 Chief Mental Health Officer and Health Sciences Clinical Professor, UCSF.

beginning at 9:30 a.m. to continue providing its services at no cost to veterans who present a military I.D. Pets of veterans are checked in on a first come, first serve basis, and this continues to 1 p.m. or until full. The mobile clinic is parked near the Center Avenue entrance to the VA Center. Only cats and dogs are served and there is a limit of two animals per veteran. Dogs must be on-leash and under control at all times. Cats must be in carriers. So far, the mobile clinic has made two visits to the Martinez VA , the first taking place at end

of 2015. A total of 37 dogs and 12 cats belonging to 35 vets have been served, according to Bobbe Bartlett, development director for ARF. The current types of services provided will be expanded in the future to include spaying and neutering. Veterans who had previously brought their pets to the clinic will be given priorirty for these surgical procedures. “We are grateful to have the chance to visit with the veterans in Martinez,’’ Bartlett said. For more information about the Pets for Vets program, visit www.arflife.org.

manages its food service program, hopes the program will initially serve an estimated 30 meals per day, growing to 50 meals per day. “Our menu will consist of items such as chicken alfredo, burgers and fries, chicken strips with potato salad, and burritos,’’ Onofrio said. “We will also have cold sandwiches, but from our past experience with summer feeding, the kids seem to enjoy a hot lunch more than a cold lunch.’’ The menu for the program meets all state and federal regulations, so calorie content, low sodium and offering a meat, grain, choice of milk and a fresh fruit or vegetable have to be factored into each meal. Addressing the health need goes hand in hand with preventing the dreaded intellectual summer slide that occurs when the focus on academics takes a back seat at the end of the school year. “You want them reading and keeping

them learning and active,’’ Boyer said. While the library has no idea how many children will turn out, Boyer received “a very enthusiastic and positive’’ response from children who she met during her visits to Martinez schools during the past school year to promote the upcoming summer program. Boyer explained that activities planned in the lower level activity room of the library will be arranged in stations in the space. In one corner there will be the guest readers who will start reading at 12:15 p.m., while in other corners there will be other activities. Children will be able to rotate from station to station so they can make something to take home after the storytime activity is concluded. Looking ahead to the rest of this month and July, here are scheduled guests: • June 22, Police Chief Manjit Sappal • June 23, Martinez Mayor Schroder

• June 28, July 1, and July 26 : Mary Pickett, an investigator from the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Investigation Unit, will be on hand with the office’s dog, Jo Jo. The dog provides emotional comfort to children and adult who are being interviewed and appear in court to provide testimony. Kiwanis and Rotary members also will be on hand to give their time to help with serving the lunches. “This is as community as you can get,’’ said Boyer of the time different organizations are giving to this endeavor. Also part of Lunch at the Library program, starting next week and continuing the program’s conclusion in August, there be will be a table on the side where free produce donated by the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano will be available for parents and guardians of the children who are taking part.

Universal Fastpitch 03 Nilson, sponsored by Universal Sports Academy in Martinez, took the championship win at the ASA Memorial Day Classic in Roseville on May 30. What a weekend these girls had. They played nine games total with great defensive playing, nine home runs, incredible pitching and a lot of awesome base running to end with a championship win. The girls played in temperatures ranging from 93-100 degrees Saturday through Monday, and we are all so proud of them. What an incredible team we have – from the players, coaches Troy Nilson, Ruben Vasquez and Vic Sample, to our amazing families. Without the parents, weekends like this would not happen so we thank each and every one of you! Way to go UPF 03!

Martinez Community Swim Team returns to water for first meet of 2016 season By LAUREL PUREWAL Special to the Tribune The Martinez Community Swim Team (MCST) Otters kicked off the swim season Saturday, June 4, with the team’s New Swimmers Meet. This event allows all new members of the swim team to experience their first competitive swim meet in a relaxed and friendly environment. New swimmers learn the ins-and-outs of a swim meet, including arrival times, warm-up protocol, how to read the events sheet, starting procedures and the general pace and environment of a swim meet. This is a team-only learning experience and offers the newest members a chance to get their feet wet. Then on Sunday, June 5, the Otters hosted the youngest members of four local recreational teams for the annual Eight-and-Under Invitational meet. This 2016 inaugural competitive meet featured swimmers in the 6-and-under and 7-8 age brackets. In addition to the Otters, swimmers from Crockett Swim Team, LMYA Dolphins, Benicia Stingrays and Oakwood Athletic Club participated. Held annually at the Rankin Aquatic Center in downtown Martinez, this meet is a wonderful opportunity for the youngest swimmers of participating teams to shine. The youngest Otters had many excellent performances at the Eight-and-Under Invitational. Seven MCST boys finished in the over-

all top 20. Ronin Osmond (6) swam his way to a 4th place finish. Hunter Burns (6), Shawn Keifer (8), and Max Schulze (7) also put up excellent times across all events, earning them 6th, 7th and 8th overall, respectively. MacKinnley Kirshen (8), Dillon Kitchen (8) and Agustin Montes (8) finished 15th, 16th and 20th overall. The youngest MCST ladies also performed admirably on Sunday. Bella Wilhite (6) took sixth place overall. Other top performers for the Otter ladies included Meling Esperanza (8) and Briar Cue (7), who finished 14th and 18th, respectively; and Daphne Smyth (6) and Adelina Purewal (7), finishing 19th and 21st overall. The Otters finished the meet in second place overall, just behind the LMYA Dolphins, with the Otter boys taking first place and the Otter girls finishing second. A great start to the Otters’ swim season. The Otters also took to

the pool for time trials on June 11. This is another MCST-only meet allowing swimmers to establish base times in each event. It is a fun and friendly event that allows all swimmers – not just the new or youngest– to get ready for the season. The Otters’ first dual meet was held Wednesday, June 15, against the Las Trampas Swim Team Seahorses, at

the Las Trampas pool. The Otters’ first dual home meet at Rankin Aquatic Center will be against the Oakwood Athletic Club on Saturday, June 18 at 8:30 am. Admission is free and there will be a snack shack and raffles with proceeds supporting MCST. (See future editions of the Tribune for results from these meets.) The MCST Otters have been an active part of the Martinez community since 1980. As one of the largest recreational swim teams in the East Bay, the Otters are a team of athletes, coaches, parents and community members who value the hard work, persistence, and commitment that are necessary to have an enjoyable summer swim experience. Membership is open to all swimmers between the ages of four and 18 (as of June 15) and is not limited to the Martinez area. For more information, visit www.got otters.org.

ALL HAIL THE CONQUERING GRADUATES!

ALHAMBRA Alhambra High School Class of 2016 takes their final walk as AHS students on Knowles Field June 10 HYMN By DAVID SCHOLZ Martinez Tribune MARTINEZ, Calif. – The shrill of bull horns and screams and cheers of joy by family and friends is still hanging in the air at Knowles Field a week after the latest send off of graduates from Alhambra High School. The slate of speakers offered

the members may encounter as they move forward. Muth extolled the graduates to avoid being mere bystanders and to “not succumb to pessimism.’’ And no matter what the naysayers may voice, remain optimistic and continue to pursue individual passions. Martinez Mayor Rob Schroder spoke of the new

Alhambra High School will always be home ... a range of humorous and heartfelt memories of the times that were, and sobering words of advice for handling whatever the days ahead may bring. Rami Muth, who is Martinez Unified School District’s outgoing superintendent, praised the caring spirit of Alhambra High’s Class of 2016 and expressed confidence they would draw on their strengths to tackle the bumps in the road

role that comes with graduating from high school. “You’re the future of Martinez, the country and the world,’’ Schroder said, adding the years ahead will include “giving back to the community, to your family, friends and neighbors.’’ Among those adding a bit of levity to the proceedings was AHS English teacher Frank Reichert, who offered

his own list of top five things that could have altered the lives of the graduates during their time at Alhambra. No. 5 on the list involved winning an NCS championship. If you were a girl, play softball – and on the male side, take up volleyball. “No. 4 – if you wanted to be a speaker at graduation, you should have been part of Mock Trial,’’ Reichert said in a plug to his club activity. For No. 3, Reichert suggested less time on Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter. “No. 2 – remove hate from your heart,’’ he said. “And, the No. 1 thing you should have learned at Alhambra High School – you are not done yet,’’ he said. No school function is complete these days without the utterance of the latest educational catch phrase “Common Core,’’ and Alhambra High School Associated Student Body President Blake Johnson

used the commencement exercises for a final say before the diplomas were distributed. “It isn’t cheating, it is collaborating,’’ said Johnson of the occasional sharing of information for class and homework assignments. “I am pretty sure that was a Common Core standard.’’ Frank Escalante, the

class’s Valedictorian, said he hoped his fellow graduates would take with them all they learned from the last four years, including “how to think.” Wherever the paths of the 254 graduates of the Class of 2016 take them on life’s journey, Alhambra High School “will always be home.’’

All hail to thee, Alhambra Your colors gold and blue; A mighty chorus let us raise Of praise and honor, too. Come let us sing together Once more our ringing cry All hail to thee, Alhambra, All hail, Alhambra High!

Elliott What an incredible four years it has been! We have cherished every moment with you and couldn’t be more proud. Good luck to you at the University of Nevada Reno. We love you so much! Love, Mom, Dad, Dillon and Morgan

Congratulations to Vicente, Briones High Class of 2016 Students’ strengths, tenacity highlighted during June 8 commencement ceremony MARTINEZ, Calif. – “Courage” was a word oft repeated during the Vicente Martinez and Briones High School Class of 2016 commencement ceremony last week – and a quality each member of the graduating class has in spades, according to their mentors. After a lively medley, procession and National Anthem played by the Diablo Regional Concert Band, Principal Lori O’Connor addressed the graduates, their family members and friends gathered at John Muir Amphitheater June 8.

“I love that quote that says, ‘Sometimes courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is that little voice at the end of the day that says, I will try again tomorrow,’” O’Connor said. “Everyone that’s joined us here this evening has courage. Parents and families of our graduates have courage; you had the courage to support your children in the pursuit of their education, even though it meant not through traditional means. ... Each and every one of you had an obstacle to leap, a challenge to work through

and a struggle to overcome – a challenge to make it here today,” O’Connor said, adding the graduates are an inspiration to all. The continuation school boasted nearly 50 graduates this year, many of whom will continue their education at trade schools, community and four-year colleges. “This is a celebration that represents 13 years of effort. It reflects hard work, dedication and perseverance. Savor the moment. Take a snapshot in your mind’s eye so you will

always have this as a reference point,” outgoing Superintendent Rami Muth said to the graduating class. “You’ve chosen a path that will lead you to success, even though you’ve had to overcome some obstacles to get to where you are today.” Following a presentation of scholarships that included a dramatic entrance from the Saints Motorcycle Club of Martinez, class speakers Kathryn Butler, Catty Dalton, Carly Loveless and Johnathan Montoya talked of educational and personal struggles, and how the alternative options offered at their schools helped them reach their goal of obtaining a high school diploma. After diplomas were distributed, Muth delivered the Certification of Graduates, followed by student Jhonatan Zamora presenting the Moving of the Tassels. “Your resiliency, your hard work and your heart got you here today. It will take you a long way,” O’Connor said. “Remember this day always, and that you can achieve. And Class of 2016, continue to be courageous.”

Amusements Horoscopes

Omarr’s Weekly Astrological Forecast By JERALDINE SAUNDERS Tribune Content Agency ARIES (March 21-April 19): Pay your dues. Every new skill or study requires practice before it is possible to become proficient. You may be challenged to learn a new subject or to perform routine work in the week ahead. Having a buddy will help. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): This week you won’t be able to please all of the people all of the time. If you sense tension in the air it may be because someone is trying to overcompensate to address your needs. You may be trying too hard to be agreeable. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Group dynamics may be disturbed by dustups. In the week ahead someone could make an attempt to appear mysterious or pretend to be your friend. A partner or loved one could be forced to adhere to a tight schedule. CANCER (June 21-July 22): You will find yourself in good company. You aren’t the only person with a tight deadline to meet or a bill to pay in the week to come. A significant other with shrewd common sense and business acumen can help. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Never complain, never explain may be a good motto this week. You may have concerns that revolve around finances, but wise advice or counsel from co-workers or family members could help you find a perfect solution. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Grab the low hanging fruit. What you need is right there for the taking and little effort is necessary. In the upcoming week you may be tempted to reach too high. Don’t act impulsively with your money or loved ones.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Calm down. Your need for romance and attention could distract you from focusing on concrete accomplishments in the week ahead. Too much socializing on the job can make you fall behind or create some awkward moments. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Crucial commitments need to be handled with kid gloves in the week ahead. Take your time about making important changes. An innocent flirtation can give your ego a boost and lighten the load of a serious subject. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21): Pull in the sails and keep a steady hand on the rudder. There may be some rough seas in the week ahead. The demands of your career may keep you on a tight schedule just when family or a loved one needs attention. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22Jan. 19): You are powerfully tethered to the achievement of a goal. Some co-workers may experience difficulties but that won’t dampen your enthusiasm. As this week unfolds you may find that communications go awry. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You can play musical chairs with your money until the music stops. Make sure you aren’t indulging in fads or fancies this week. A significant other will give you added support to face up to your responsibilities. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The truth may come out at the most inopportune time. In the upcoming week you may make a stand at the wrong time. Someone who expresses doubt about your trustworthiness can put you into a defensive position. (c) 2016 TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY, LLC.
