“I don’t have possessions anymore, I’m all about experiences and it’s high time that our workspaces and living spaces caught up” James Scott Collective’s chief operating officer WeLive, NY

Final Major Project Heriot Watt University (May 2021 - Sept 2021) Technology is allowing us to work from anywhere. Moreover, the pandemic has taught us that when we have the need for something, we do whatever is necessary and now, more than ever in history, people can enjoy freedom and flexibility at work. This fact is changing the way we engage with our living and working spaces and as designers, we need to act! Within this project, I explored the historical context of nomadism; digital nomad concept, nomads’ profiles, and lifestyles; how this movement was created; current situation and estimations; their main ways of living - co-living and co-working spaces and how this affects the pandemic situation and travel industry.

As the research showed me that the fact of counting on digital nomads in the development of the cities is increasing and existing literature stated that one of digital nomad ́s biggest challenges is engaging with the local community, I made the decision of developing a digital centre where the Edinburgh community and digital nomads can engage together, cooperating in community projects, learning from each other and aiming to involve all the generations from baby boomers to gen Z, developing a sense of community and belonging. For the proposal, I focused on the Atria One building (Edinburgh, Scotland), redesigning the ground floor of the premises which had the potential to locate the activities for the proposed Digital Centre.

Existing Building - Atria One (Edinburgh) Area of intervention: Ground floor

Existing

Proposal

VERANDA

Concept The ground floor of the building is configured as a longitudinal corridor, being the atrium, the core of the design and where we find common spaces and singular elements like the wooden veranda structure. The design is inspired by the idea of a courtyard as a traditional place where cultural and community events take place. It is also related to the relationship between humans and nature thus, greenery was essential to maintain its aesthetic. Furthermore, the atrium contains a singular element, the veranda, which adds further to the idea of a courtyard as it is one of its key elements. Therefore, the design establishes a common space where digital nomads and the local Edinburgh community connect, a place to welcome them when arriving at their destination. A hub where they could learn from each other and develop community projects focusing especially on the digital and technological revolution that we are currently experiencing.

Design Development

The proposed digital courtyard is centred by an interior green space that holds all these activities. Accordingly, the proposal aims to present the veranda as the start point of the digital courtyard design, maintaining the existing veranda structure and adding new sections into it, generating a bespoke structure that can be movable, allowing people to choose the configuration of the space according to their requirements and contributing to the space dynamism.

quality&equality Tackling food poverty in Galashiels. A space to...

Heriot Watt University Interior Design & Architecture (Sept 2020 -Dec 2020) The project consisted of a Cafe design in Galashiels (Scotland) for Cafe Recharge who is a Community Interest Company set up by two entrepreneurs from Galashiels. They are providing free or low-cost nutritional meals for the Galashiels community using surplus food from supermarkets. The design required it to be a space for people, a place where they can meet, enjoy, and share meals, welcoming for everyone, almost like a shelter where nobody feels judged, as well as using as many elements as possible from the original design given that it is funded by donations, and they had a limited budget we had to work with.

For that, the research focused on analysing the meaning of food poverty, what leads to it, who is affected, and what is the impact. Regarding the site, it is located at 58 Island Street (Galashiels). Previously, it was used as a bar, so that brought the first challenge about how to turn a bar into a warming place, welcoming in a cafe way. For them, the design was key to making the project work, creating a space for the community and not just a place to eat. Furthermore, the clients wanted to implement activities such as cookery classes, workshops, evening meals, game nights, support meetings as well as a space for a zero-waste business for people to refill. Lastly, they aim to grow some of the food they will be using for the menus.

Existing design

Concept The design idea was about a beautiful and relaxing place where being able to feel nature, next to the plants and natural food; a place to find inspiration, knowledge, and support from others while helping the planet; approaching new ways of understanding reality; ideas of making connections with people... The space is arranged by partitions that help with the organisation using a grid made from recycled rebar structure and recycled wooden boxes (40x40cm). For the proposal, the framework contains food, community boards, books, and plants. Wooden boxes are moveable, creating this idea of collaboration/cooperation in the design, allowing people to have a different experience in the cafe and having the opportunity to feel at home. Space will never be the same and plants are growing to allow the transformation over time.

I wanted to incorporate the idea of no distinction between inside-outside, therefore, north and south walls are knocked through to reveal the outside brickwork. Bringing the frontage and balcony facade inside the space adds to the idea of the natural environment when incorporating all the plant box structures. Finally, the west and east walls are painted in a pale white colour, contrasting with the rest of the rustic materials in the design and remaining neutral, allowing the plants to take centre stage.

Freelance - Residential Project

Surveying and design (Aug 2021 - In progress)

Client

- Young professional couple. - They plan to live for a year and rent the apartment after that. - Limited budget as they are planning to rent.

Design

The existence of a column in the wall that separates the kitchen and the living room made it difficult to create an open space plan as the clients suggested. Conversely, for the proposal, I suggested the idea of widening the wall making it possible to design a kitchen with more worktops and elements and separate the spaces at the same time that maintaining an open plan feel.

Nursery & Care Home ‘It is much more than just a nice idea. It is a social value’ Mariano Sanchez, Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Granada

University of Granada Achitecture Bachelors Degree (Jan 2015 - May 2015) The project consists of the creation of a nursery and cares home in Granada, Spain. A design that is based on the intergenerational philosophy in which children (under 3) and the elderly share spaces and activities, generating major beneficial effects for both. To understand the brief, we were in contact with professionals who explained to us how important it is to develop this kind of intervention. The children internalise a positive concept of ageing and learn to relate to others. They also learn how important time is in life. Meanwhile, older people feel that they do not have to be disconnected from the world, regaining the role of responsible adults that they used to have.

Follow the thread from Galashiels

Final Major Project Heriot Watt University (Jan 2021 - May 2021) The project consists of the design of a Visitor Information Hub in Galashiels for Energise Galashiels Trust, which is a community-led organisation that works hard to support the Galashiels regeneration plan. The Masterplan relies on interventions such as the exciting Tapestry Museum and the proposed Information Hub, among others. The design inspiration was the weaving machine that clearly stated the idea of a structure of rope panels that follow the people through the different activities of the design. The aim was for the structure to be like a weaving machine so that the material research was very important within its development.

The curves consist of three layers of 18 mm plywood that are formed into one-metre modular sections, allowing for the rope structure to be taken apart and stored easily. The modular sections further permit the design partitions of varying sizes in the case of moving sites in the future. The top and bottom panels mirror one another, and the rope essentially is used to secure both panels. This example of the rope panel corresponds to a 2.2 m in height and depending on the space will either be attached to the above beams or the ceiling.

Inspiration

For the floor attachment, each modular section is secured to the floor with screws and the modular sections of the top frame are joined together with another layer of plywood which is then connected to the ceiling with a brush shaft and screws. The final step is the rope attachment in which each metre section will have thirty ropes and therefore thirty eye hooks will be evenly screwed into both the top and bottom frames. The appropriate amount of rope is then looped through each eye hook or alternatively tied and cut.
