GlobalLeadersSummit “LetThemEatCake”
Sofía
CBMUN V's last day has begun. Delegates rush to their commissions in an effort to make their last points and possibly win an award. For leaders at the GLS committee, the topic of Imperialism as the highest state ofcapitalismcontinues to as the topic of discussion. Yesterday, leadersstatedtheirpositionsonthetopicat hand and discussed the key points of the debate which include: the justification for imperialism, economic globalization, historical examples of monopoly capitalism, and imperialism in the 21st century.
In today's first debate session, anti-imperialist leaders continued to condemn imperialism and highlight the harm it has brought to the world, while imperialists defended their intervention in foreign lands. The discussion took a
drastic turn when a crisis was presented: According to a New York Times report, the Commonwealth was separated and each of its states gained independence. After that, Kwame Nkrumah intervened and denounced imperialism in general, but particularly British imperialism, claiming they would cut economic ties with theUK considering it has long oppressed and neglectedCommonwealthnations.
Following said intervention and NewYorkTimesreport, imperialistleaders such as Otto Von Bismarck, KingLeopold II, and Margaret Thatcher (in representation of British imperialism)took a strong stance and announced their mobilization into the African and South American continent. Although they initially claimed that their mobilization would be peaceful, things swiftly went south when they implied that it would actually be an invasion in the colonial style. As an apparent allusion to the infamous “Scramble for Africa,” Margaret Thatcher chanted “let them eat cake” as the three leaders sliced a cake asasymbol oftheirintervention.
Thecommittee'sleaderswere shockedbytheseassertions.Severalother leadersmadecontributions,including SalvadorAllendewhoquotedtheBlack Panthers'leaderassaying,“Youcankill me,butyoucan'tkilltherevolution,”and VladimirLeninwhocalledforaunion againstimperialism.WhenMargaret ThatchersentmentocaptureAllendeand Leninandthreatenedtokillthem,chaos brokeoutthroughouttheroom.The
minutesthatfollowedwereturbulent,with deaththreatscomingfrombothsides, SaddamHusseinandNayibBukele promisingtobringtheir“comrades”to justice,andthesesameleadersleadinga prayersession.
Thesocialistleaders(Allendeand Lenin)eventuallyreturned,insistingthat nationalizingindustrieswouldbetheonly waytoresolvethisissueandreacha“new socialistworldfreeofimperialism.”This way,countrieswouldbeabletoprotect theirresourcesfromforeignpowers.They alsourgedotherleaderstocease connectionswithBelgium,Germany,and England.OttoVonBismarck'sunnecessary yellingandthecollaborationof anti-imperialismleaderstoassassinate imperialistleadersonlyheightenedthe tenseatmosphereintheroom.
