APPS MOVIES MUSIC

BIRDS OF PREY by Allis on Beatty For the countless iterations of movies, books and video games surrounding Batman and his most famous nemesis, the Joker, there’s sometimes a lack of media pertaining to any other characters in Gotham. Gradually, though, DC Comics is amending that with shows like Batwoman and movies like the recently released “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey” starring Margot Robbie as the titular character. “Birds of Prey” focuses on Harley Quinn navigating life in the aftermath of her breakup with the Joker, kindof-sort-of discovering what’s important to her along the way. With fantastic leading ladies and an intense plotline that perforates the disturbing with the delightful, “Birds of Prey” hits the spot, giving the audience a squad to root for in both their fight against unthinkable evil and relatable life problems. Be warned, though: this is one R-rated movie that is not for the faint of heart, with a decent spattering of violence, including several particularly graphic parts. If that sounds like something you can handle (or close your eyes for), then definitely check out this new and improved version of Harley Quinn before she leaves theatres.

“Map of the Soul: 7” by BTS by Anna Villalobos Looking for something new to add to your playlist? Check out “Map of the Soul: 7,” the newest studio album by BTS, the popular boy band from South Korea. On this seventh album, the boys collaborate with famous artists Sia and Halsey. Featuring singles “Black Swan” and “On,” this album is a K-Pop fusion of hip hop, pop, and dance that explores identity and individualism. The tracks have a wide variety of sounds, however, including rap, rock, and some R&B. With its well-crafted representations of emotion, fame and discovery, the album seems to take on a life of its own and become more than just an album. Either way, it will for sure broaden your musical tastes and be a fresh addition to your pre-summer vibes.

GAMER'S AN THEM: LOCAL ARCADE OPENS IN BRYAN by Dylan Allen

16 MAROON WEEKLY // Mar. 04, 2020 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM

I

n the digital world we live in today, boundless entertainment is available at the touch of our fingertips or even a voice command, telling your smart TV to play a Netflix special you aren’t that interested in. However, the irony in the growing digital connectedness is that it comes at the price of being more disconnected from human interactions. The latest entertainment venue in Bryan addresses that problem and offers a solution. Gamers Anthem, Bryan’s newest local arcade, opens on March 7 and provides fresh entertainment you can enjoy with friends. Gamers Anthem is a console gaming arcade, meaning that it’s a modern spin on the classic arcade. Instead of the stationary Pac-man or Galaga games, there are Playstations, Nintendos, Xboxs and Virtual Reality devices throughout the arcade to allow guests to play the latest blockbuster hits that all gamers enjoy, but now in a social setting. Gamers Anthem offers the thrill of getting to play console games without the negative social isolation that comes with it. “My hope is that Gamers Anthem offers a safe escape for someone, offering a positive way to relax and de-stress,” says owner Tanya Bertram. Bertram says that while the lounge welcomes groups of people, you are also welcome to visit alone and battle a new friend on your favorite game. “We’re small, but we will continue to grow and make our arcade better with the community’s support,” Bertram says. In a world where communal gaming seems to be decreasing, Gamers Anthem is a venue for people of all ages and backgrounds. The local arcade hosts special nights such as Girls Night Out Monday, Couples Date Night Tuesday, Dance Party Thursday and Family Time Sunday. Although the arcade is aimed at casual gaming, if you’re a more serious gamer, you can show off your skills by entering one of the tournaments that are held monthly. If you have something to celebrate, then you can check out Gamers Anthem’s party room. For a birthday party or related event, the cost is $25 per person for two hours and includes the use of the room and one reserved gaming station for every two people. If you want to game even harder, you can even reserve the entire lounge that includes the use of the party room and all gaming stations. Regular hours are in the afternoons and evenings every day except Wednesday. Over Spring Break, expect extended hours.

Cooper continues, saying,

“Music has the ability to impact a person’s life physically, emotionally, and spiritually, whether you’re per forming or listening.” So grab your pen and pad and bring an appetite for good tunes, amazing conversations and of course
