How ERP Petroleum Distribution Software Has Evolved It’s safe to say that all virtually all companies in the gas distribution industry use computers and some form of software to help manage their business. It’s also likely that a majority of companies in this complex and highly regulated industry utilize some form of ERP (enterprise resource planning) software. Given the complicated nature of the industry and the impressive power and flexibility of many ERP products, that’s not surprising. ERP software was originally developed as far back as the 1980s, when a few software companies began marketing individual accounting modules to businesses that were primarily using personal computers at that time. These modules, although primitive in comparison to most of the software products available today, were designed to automate and streamline the time-consuming daily tasks involved in business accounting. A few years later, as larger computer systems started to replace PCs in the workforce, ERP software first emerged as a viable product for business use. One of the earliest versions was Macola Progression, a product that had evolved from some of the accounting modules that were initially introduced in the 1980s. Although still without many of the capabilities of modern-day ERP programs, Macola Progression and a few other early ERP products offered businesses an expanded variety of features and capabilities.

Today’s ERP software is designed to automate and streamline almost every imaginable task within a company. Just consider some of the features that today’s ERP petroleum distribution software products offer:  The ability to accurately track a customer’s purchasing history, as well as predict their future needs  The ability to keep track of inventory levels, allowing company management to keep pace with customer demands

 The ability to accurately calculate taxes due  The ability to coordinate and streamline tank wagon paperwork  The ability to analyze payment records of customers and track new payables, credit memos, etc.  The ability to streamline purchasing processes  The ability to improve communications, both within a company and with outside entities as well (such as customers, vendors, suppliers, etc.) If you own or manage a gas distribution company and still haven’t purchased ERP software, there’s no time like the present. In fact, it’s quickly becoming an absolute necessity in this fast-paced industry if you want to keep pace with the competition. Fortunately, many ERP programs are sold in module form, enabling you to purchase individual modules one at a time. This is an excellent way to not only spread out the cost of the product over time, making it an easier investment for many companies, but also to slowly introduce ERP to your staff so that they have time to become accustomed to this “new” way of doing business.
