Lady Gertrude Georgina Stock, née Douglas, was born 21st August 1842. She was the daughter of Sarah Sholto Douglas and John Douglas, the 7th Marquess of Queensbury. In addition to being an aristocrat, Lady Gertrude Stock was an accomplished novelist, writing under the alias George Douglas. Her novels are described as “robust”, often featuring “hoydenish heroines”. Lady Gertrude Stock established the National Canine Defence League, the forerunner to the charity that is today recognised as the Dogs Trust. She founded the charity to protect canines from ill-usage and torture of all kinds.
