Magically Unfolding When I was younger, the world and its possibilities were endless. The promise of a better, more convenient and abundant life was the norm in all advertising, education and families. What happened wasn’t quite like this. Now concerned about the world we have created for future generations, I’m not as excited about the future as forty years ago. Yet there have been some messages coming across my path recently that have eased my concerns. Each message has moved me away from the details and reminded me of a more magical understanding of my existence here. My 84-year-old friend recently shared a passage from an old book he was reading when I told him about my feelings about our mixed up world. From The Spoils of Time, A World History from the Dawn of Civilization through the Early Renaissance, my friend read its concluding paragraph: “So the planet went on its course through space revolving toward the sun, away from the sun, day and night, night and day, year in and year out with perhaps a few hundred million people

on board. Most of them concerned only with the struggle for existence. It was a long way from one world.” We now have billions of people on spaceship Earth consuming and struggling for existence a few hundred years later. We have invented many wonderful life enhancing and entertaining gizmos, but we still haven’t figured out the magic of the paradise we were given to share with one another. A lot of the details of modern civilization make no sense anymore with ice caps melting and war still rearing its outdated head, but in the greater scheme of things these are simply details that are mere blips in time. Cultures come and go but the universes will keep evolving in their magical way.

The best thing for dealing with the carnage of our people and planet is to be as creative as our potential allows. Add compassion and love to our everyday existence and we will have accomplished maybe the most important aspect of our journey here on earth And from one of my very favorite pieces entitled, Desiderata, a closing thought. “You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.”

EARTH TALK

From the Editors of E/The Environmental Magazine

Since China stopped accepting American recyclables for processing in 2017, is it still worthwhile for us to even bother recycling here in the U.S.? - Jim M., Norfolk, VA

and India) stepped up to fill the void by taking larger loads of our waste. But poorly run waste management practices and lack of government oversight lead to conditions where only about 10 percent of potentially recyclable waste sent to these countries gets recycled. According to a recent World Bank report, much of what doesn’t get recycled ends up in “unregulated dumps or is openly burned…[creating] serious health, safety and environmental consequences.” But more recently, many of these countries are now following in China’s footsteps by tightening up their own rules about what kinds of waste they are willing to accept.

The short answer is yes, it’s still worthwhile for us to recycle, even if it’s not as easy and more expensive than it used to be—especially when you consider the costly and environmentally dubious alternative of creating new products out of all-virgin materials. That said, China’s decision to stop accepting most recyclables from other countries beginning in January 2018 did send shockwaves around the world.
