Minding Our Own Business Paying attention to other people’s business seems to be the latest rage in America. In actuality, the practice of gossiping and exploiting the newsworthy events in even the most ordinary person’s life has become a common subject of communication.
misjudgments. Unfortunately, the higher we progress in our work and the more responsibilities we assume, the harder we fall.
Talking about other people’s troubles, bragging about our possessions or complaining about what’s wrong with the world are subjects that don’t accomplish much. When we focus on these topics, we make no impact on improving the quality of our lives.
If we concentrate only on our own success or failure, we are more likely to make a difference in the world. In his book Wherever You Go There You Are, Jon Kabat-Zinn notes that”... waking up is ultimately something that each one of us can only do for ourselves.” We need to remember we can’t change others. Everyone learns from their own mistakes, with errors being their constant companions.
Whether it’s our president or Aunt Suzy we select for our conversations, it’s best to find something positive to say. Most of us believe in standing up for what we believe, but there is a fine line between being principled and being cruel.
To have a significant impact in changing what isn’t right, we might avoid complacency and be willing to take risks. This means making more mistakes. The more passionate we become about life and people who touch our lives, the more we risk disappointment and failure.
Why do people savor the stories in the media and in our private lives that delve deeper and more destructively into matters that are personal? Does the failure and vulnerability of another make us feel safer or better about ourselves? Or is news that is focused on mistakes and suffering just another form of entertainment? Both are probably partially true.
To grow to the best person we can be, we must always pay attention to everything and everyone we come in contact with. If someone is ill or is struggling with the challenges of daily life, lending an ear or sharing a pot of homemade soup could cheer someone’s spirit. But making the sour events in other people’s lives our business, ones we have no control of, robs us of the energy we all need to make a difference in our own world. We only have power over ourselves and who we become, and that should be our only business here.
There is a saying, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” I don’t know anyone who has lived a totally pure life. To be human is to repeatedly stumble and fall because of

Sperry Associates FCU Awards $10,000 in Scholarships to Long Island Students Scholarship winners demonstrated academic excellence & a dedication to community service. Garden City Park, NY, August 22, 2019 – After a highly competitive application process, Sperry Associates Federal Credit Union (Sperry) awarded four deserving students a total of $10,000 in scholarship money. This year’s honors, awarded as a $2,500 prize to each of the four winners, continues a nearly decade-long tradition of the member-owned financial institution investing in local scholars.
“Our scholarship winners represent the best and brightest of Sperry’s membership,” Kevin J. Healy, Sperry’s Chief Executive Officer, said. “We’re proud to invest in the future of these bright individuals who not only have proven records of success academically, but through their volunteer work as well.”
The 2019 scholarship winners include: Frederick Grimshaw A New Hyde Park-based student at Adelphi University who is studying to become a teacher. Grimshaw volunteers with Circle K, the collegiate version of Kiwanis International, as well as plays the drums in his church band. Christina Levi A Garden City-based high school student who volunteers at Horseability, an Old Westburybased non-profit that offers hippotherapy and therapeutic horseback lessons, Levi has experience working with individuals with special needs. She will be attending Marist College in the fall, and plans to study clinical psychology. Cheyenne Samson A Franklin Square-based biopharmaceutical student who is pursuing her master’s degree in bioengineering at Binghamton, Samson led a team of engineers to help develop a device that lifts senior dogs for a local non-profit who helps assist animals in the Binghamton area.
Racquel Walsh A Ronkonkoma-based freshman at Bloomsburg University with a strong record of academic and musical success, Walsh raised $12,000 to start a scholarship fund in memory of her mentor. Walsh plans on studying speech pathology, as inspired by experiences working with children with special needs.
