• The verb être (to be) has several forms, as does the verb 'to be' in English. There are five spoken forms and six written forms for the present indicative.

• The verb être is used in a similar way to the English to be:

Je suis fatigué. (I’m tired.)

• It is used as an auxiliary verb along with some verbs to form the perfect tense (passé composé):

Je suis né(e) au Pays de Galles. (I was born in Wales.)

• It is commonly used followed by an adjective or a noun and serves to describe, present or identify:

– with an adjective used to describe:

Je suis grand maintenant ! (I’m grown-up now!)

– with a noun used to present:

Lui, c’est mon ami Paul. (He is my friend Paul.)

– with a noun used to identify:

Sa mère est infirmière. (His mother is a nurse.)

• It can also be used in locutions or phrases, such as:

Être dans : Vous êtes dans le commerce ? (Do you work in business?)

Être pour : Tu es pour l’écologie ? (Are you in favour of ecology?)
