he central region has many historical sights and natural wonders in Mongolia’s heartland and few traces remain of Kharakhorum, the 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire, and it was once the central hub of civilization during the times of the great Mongolian empire. There were many craftsmen and traders brought back to the city from all over conquered states and as democratic rule, both Mongolians and foreigners were legally equal right to live in the city.

H

istorically, Mongols built the biggest land empire the world has ever known with the horse as their driven force. Mongolia has been a horse based culture for thousands of years. Even today, horses are essential to daily life of Mongolian.

T

he Burkhan Khaldun is one of the Khentii Mountain Range in the Khentii Province of northeastern Mongolia. The mountain or its locality is believed to be the birthplace of Chingis Khaan as well as the location of his tomb. The mountain is in the 12,000 square kilometres (4,600 sq mi) Strictly Protected Area established in 1992. It had strong religious significance before Genghis Khan made it a powerful landmark, but is considered the most sacred mountain in Mongolia since it was designated as sacred by Genghis Khan. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee on July 4, 2015 under the title “Great Burkhan Khaldun Mountain and its surrounding sacred landscape�.

NAADAM FESTIVAL

V

isiting the Naadam Festival will definitely lead to better understanding of Mongolian history and culture. Naadam is a time when Mongolians celebrate who they are, how proud they are to be Mongolian. Naadam is the biggest festival of the year for Mongolians and is held in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar during the National Holiday from July 11-13. It begins with an elaborate introduction ceremony featuring dancers, athletes, horse riders, and musicians. After the opening ceremony, the competitions begin

ASIA’S BLUE PEARL

W

ith its 4 islands, Khuvsgul Lake is Mongolia’s largest and deepest lake and known as “Blue Pearl”. The lake area is surrounded by forest mountains and only Eg river flows out from the lake although total 111 rivers flow in Huvsgul lake. The lake is 136 km long, 36 km wide, 262 meters deep from its surface to the bottom and reserves over 2% of the world’s fresh water. The north-western part of Khuvsgul lake basin is a native place of reindeer people. The culture of these people have changed little and like many of Mongolia’s nomads, and particularly those in the north, shamanism plays an important role in their lives. 4

ALTAI MOUNTAIN RANGE-SIMPLY HIGH, WILD AND SPECTACULAR

T

he Mongol Altai Range has many peaks reaching 4000 meters above sea level and stretches for almost 1000 km from the north-western part of the country to the south and over 20 peaks are capped with eternal snow in the range. The tallest of these, Khuiten Uul, is the highest mountain in Mongolia, at 4,369m (about 14,300 feet). Despite its remote location, the park and its beautiful scenery make it the premier attraction in the Western Mongolia. Divided from China by a high wall of snow-capped peaks, the area is a trekker’s paradise.

Four of the peaks require mountaineering equipment and experience climbers, though the shortest, Malchin Uul (“Herder Peak”) at 4025 M, can be hiked by novices. Near the mountains it is possible to hike Pontanin Glacier. Khoton lake is fed by more than 10 rivers and the average depth is 26 m, the maximum depth is approximately 58 metres. The landscape around the lakes is stunning: with forests and the snow-capped Altai Mountains. Khoit Tsenkher cave, the longest cave of the Mongol Altai mountain chain. The cave is formed in the limestone of the Proterozoic period. This cave is located 25 km southwest of Mankhan sum Khovd province, at 47°20’50.5” N and 91°57’24.1” E. Khoit Tsenkher cave has two branches. The main passage is 130m and 90m.Khoit Tsenkher cave is famous rock paintings. Rock paintings of the Khoit Tsenkher cave date back to the Upper Palaeolithic period (20,000-15, 000 years ago).

Kharakhorum is Mongolian ancient capital city and was founded in 1220 in Orkhon Valley. As strategically, it was positioned at the crossroads of the Silk Road. It was from there that the Mongol Empire governed, until Khubilai Khaan moved it to Beijing. As historically, it was initiated by Chingis Kaan and started to build in 1220 and his son Ogedei Khaan completed it. But it was served a capital city of Mongolian Empire only 40 years. Today the symbolic ruins of the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia Erdene Zuu left which was built on the ground of the Kharakhorum in 1586. Interesting historical fact is in 1253 the French sculptor Guillaume Bouchier designed and built the most famous fountain in the city. The fountain was in the shape of a huge silver tree, which simultaneously dispensed mare’s milk from silver lion’s heads, and wine, rice wine from four golden spouts shaped.
