Get in the spirit with Holiday Pops at The Whiting By William E. Ketchum III wketchum@mlive.ocm

Next weekend, the Flint Institute of Music will continue a Christmas tradition more than a dozen years old. Multiple Flint music organizations will collaborate for two performances of the 13th annual Holiday pops concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Dec. 22 at The Whiting. SEVERAL MUSICAL GROUPS

The concert will feature Christmas carols and other holiday songs, performed by the Flint Symphony Orchestra, the Flint Festival Chorus and area high school singers, Flint Jubilee Chorale, Flint Festival Youth Chorus, Flint School of Performing Arts Show Choir, and vocal soloist Chelsea Ellison. Selections will include “The First Noel,” “Jingle Bells,” “Carol of the Bells,” “A Charlie

Brown Christmas,” and more. Every year, organizers try to pick a collection of traditional Christmas songs and new arrangements to keep things interesting. MIX OF HOLIDAY MUSIC

“Holiday Pops is an eclectic mix of holiday music. We try to offer something for everyone,” said Sylvia Pittman, who is the coordinator for the Flint Jubilee Chorale, the director for the Flint Festival Youth Chorus, and a teacher for Ellison. “The challenge for us, creatively and artistically, is to put together a program every year that’s fresh, new, innovative and creative. “Every year is going to be different. You get a mix of secular music, sacred music ... just about everything you could think of.” The younger musicians begin to prepare for the show

around September, while the adult vocalists begin rehearsing and the end of October. Pittman said her goals for the chorale are to present them in an attractive way to help them “appeal to a multi-generational audience.” For the Youth Chorus, who she refers to as her “ferocious little singers,” she aims to find good selections for their limited vocal range. CHALLENGING SHOW

She and her groups enjoy the challenge, and the “educational experience” to perform with the Flint Symphony Orchestra. “It’s challenging, but it’s exciting and fun. You just have to be creative and think outside of the box,” she said. “Flint Symphony Orchestra is one of the top orchestras in the nation. You go to rehearsal and think, ‘This is not

Memorex, this is not canned, this is real people playing real music.’” The Flint Symphony Orchestra begins its preparation much later than the chorale: they only have a pair of group rehearsals on Thursday and Friday before the weekend shows. “It’s hard to get that much music rehearsed, but we have a very good orchestra that reads very well, so they can assimilate very quickly,” said Tom Glasscock, orchestra manager. 100PLUS PERFORMERS

In the first hour of the concert, each of the groups gets time to showcase its skills before a performance of “Hallelujah from Messiah” that combines all of the 100plus performers for one selection. “(The performance is) quite

thunderous,” said Andrew Ward, marketing director for Flint Institute of Music. “It’s enough to put energy into the air of The Whiting, with all the voices combined, and the musicians.” GUEST CONDUCTOR

After a 20-minute intermission, most of the adult performers return for other selections, including “Classical Carols,” a group of famous carols arranged by David Mairs, a guest conductor who handled the Institute’s production of “The Nutcracker” and the Music in the Parks performances. The Saturday show is sold out, and the Sunday show was on its way. Glasscock and Ward said the show has done well ever since it started. “It has become a holiday family tradition,” Ward said. The show has ABC12 and

Security Credit Union as partners. ABC12’s Angie Hendershot and Matt Franklin will co-host the show, and the first hour of the Dec. 21 performance will be broadcast live on ABC12. It will be rebroadcast on ABC12 on Dec. 24 from 4 p.m. till 5 p.m., and from noon to 1 p.m. on Christmas day, along with broadcasts on PBS stations around Michigan during the season. Glasscock said a former Flint Journal publisher came up with the idea based on the Boston Pops concert. The two of them teamed with the general manager at ABC12 to put together the concert. Tickets range from $10 to $32, with a $2 senior and full-time student discount and half price for children 18 and younger. Tickets may be purchased by calling 810-2377333, 888-8-CENTER.
