College Motto Servo Fidem

The second letter of Paul to Timothy is a presentation of the Apostle's teaching to his friend and companion, and so to all Christians. From it we derive our motto, I Keep the Faith.

Bonum certamen certavi, cursum consummavi, fidem servavi. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.

Since 1968, Marist Canberra has been a part of and had its footprints on the land of the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples. As a College, we acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we stand. We acknowledge the continued deep spiritual attachment and relationship they have to this land and commit ourselves to the challenge of Closing the Gap and the ongoing journey of Reconciliation.

Welcometo Marist College Canberra

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about us. I hope you feel a sense of the rich, vibrant learning environment offered here at Marist College Canberra

Two hundred years ago, the founder of the Marist Brothers, St Marcellin Champagnat, claimed his core work was ‘to produce good Christians and good citizens’.

This remains the goal for Marist College Canberra as there are few responsibilities as crucial to our society as the preparation of young people for life in today’s world.

A Marist education provides boys with a spiritual compass while teaching them how to seek guidance from God. We aim to place a Marian stamp on the hearts of our boys, so they will know how to work in the service of others, with a strong mind and a gentle heart. Your son’s time here with us is a journey, based on Catholic values, in the tradition of St Marcellin Champagnat

Take the time to learn more about the opportunities we can provide for your son. We are proud of our Marist tradition of hospitality, and I extend a warm invitation to you to come and visit us so we may show you our College and how proud we are to be part of its community.

MISSION AT MARIST.

MARIST COLLEGE CANBERRA PROSPECTUS PAGE 05

Relationships are at the heart of all we do. The pastoral support we provide assists our students to become men of purpose, with a profound sense of their own worth, and an enduring sense of responsibility for others.

Contemporary literature in the area of student wellbeing and resilience identifies a strong link between emotional wellbeing and educational outcomes. Among the characteristics identified as contributing to good pastoral care are fostering a sense of belonging and connectedness and providing a safe and secure environment.

At Marist College Canberra, good pastoral care underpins everything we do: our classroom preparation and practice, our supervision, our cocurricular activities and our tutoring.

HOUSE SYSTEM

All students in Years 4 - 12 are allocated to one of the ten College Houses. These Houses are vertically integrated, meaning boys have an opportunity to develop relationships across year groups.

Our Houses are fundamental to the pastoral care system at the College and promote social, academic, spiritual and emotional wellbeing.

Our teachers are committed to providing a nurturing and supportive environment for each and every boy; care that focuses on developing their strengths and talents and providing an environment where they are safe to be themselves - an environment where every boy is known, and every boy is loved.

As a Catholic school in the tradition of St Marcellin Champagnat, we help boys on their faith journey by running spiritual threads through the fabric of life at the College.

We guide our boys to be open to and live in God’s presence in the everyday and know that He loves them unconditionally. We strive to empower our boys, as Marcellin said, to make Jesus known and loved.

Faith and reason encompass our culture, encouraging a deep level of reflection and provoking questions to challenge and engage in order to find stable moral reference points.

As a community that lives out faith, we are committed to safeguarding the rights and dignity of each member. Our College is a community where all are cared for and all are welcome.

Evidence-Based Teaching

Our reputation for high achieving students is built on the deliberate nurturing of an evidence-based teaching and learning culture. It celebrates creativity, engagement, critical thinking, and exemplary academic and cocurricular performance, bringing out the best in each boy.

Our challenging and inclusive curriculum places a strong emphasis on developing intellectual curiosity and passion for knowledge. These are great attributes we believe will prepare young men for lives full of purpose beyond our school gates, driven to make a difference in the world through generosity, service and justice.

We believe in getting the foundations right through explicit instruction and constant feedback, allowing students to learn from their mistakes and refine their response. As they achieve mastery, we gradually remove the prompts and structures, so they can learn through inquiry, taking risks and problem solving.

WhyaSchool forBoys?

Our reputation for academic and co-curricular excellence is the result of the effectiveness of boys’ education in empowering young men to develop and grow their strengths and talents and celebrate their achievements.

Our focus on boys’ education enables them to prosper in all areas, pursuing their interests, while encouraging them to be themselves without the preconceived notions of rigid gender expectations that can regulate their decisions and drive their development.

There is something really special about schools just for boys, with teachers who understand how they learn. Our passionate and dedicated staff believe in the value of each boy and are committed to their growth. Our collaborative culture empowers our staff to work in teams that share information and the latest research to identify areas for improvement and innovation.

Our teachers place high expectations on and encourage each boy to exceed his potential. Teachers know it is important to be able to laugh with them, to stimulate their imagination, to ignite their passions and to be able to correct them, while still conveying a sense that every boy is valued.

We are committed to being a boys' school that promotes responsible relationships and positive attitudes towards girls and women. We are uncompromising in being a safe and inclusive learning community respectful of diverse backgrounds, ethnicity, gender and nationality.

An important part of any boy’s development is his ability to interact with girls, and our College has long established programs with several girls’ schools.

FOR OVER 50 YEARS, OUR COLLEGE HAS CULTIVATED A CULTURE THAT UNDERSTANDS, ACCEPTS AND CELEBRATES BOYS AND HOW THEY LEARN.

DiscoveringHis Identity

At Marist, we are passionate about creating a learning environment that speaks to the heart, expands the mind, and enriches the life of every boy entrusted to our care.

We encourage our boys to see that holistic development will result in success; we nurture each boy and strive to ensure a balance in his academic performance, cocurricular participation and personal growth. We aim to help them develop resilience, a strong sense of self, grace, compassion, kindness, a sense of humour, and a capacity for adventure so they can go on to shape their worlds and serve their wider community.

We build trusting relationships between staff and students where each boy is known, safe and respected for who he is. These relationships enable boys to thrive, question, take risks and make mistakes, initiate and to lead. They also help boys realise they are supported, cared for and valued, which in turn leads them to support, care for and value others.

Encouraging TalentandPassion

Celebrating the physical, emotional, moral and spiritual as much as the intellectual, is a key component of the educational philosophy at our College.

Different boys like different things. It is striking to see our boys thrive in their diverse passions as sportsmen, musicians or debaters, but also as actors, programmers or chess players. Nothing is considered typical, and no one activity dominates.

Our College offers more than 60 co-curricular activities that foster collaboration and leadership. We encourage our boys to try any of these diverse programs, which celebrate individuality and teamwork and foster an atmosphere of acceptance, respect, and healthy competition. As they participate in these valuable and inclusive learning experiences, the boys will fuel their curiosity, courage and optimism and be encouraged to take risks in a safe environment

IT IS STRIKING TO SEE OUR BOYS THRIVE IN THEIR DIVERSE PASSIONS.

Creating Community

Our culture, our ‘way of life’ is simply this: every boy enrolled in this school matters, every staff member matters, every family matters.

purpose and faith. It is a partnership that will see each boy’s potential nurtured and his experiences long remembered.

Contributingto Community

THE HEART OF EDUCATION IS THE EDUCATION OF THE HEART.

Our College is a place of encounter with the heart, where we aspire to teach boys to decide from the depths of their hearts.

We aspire to create a passion in each boy, not just for learning, self-assurance and improvement, but to also make a meaningful and tangible difference in the lives of the communities to which they belong.

We will prepare them to be whole-hearted in their strength of commitment to serving others.

Faith, hospitality, love, justice, and compassion guide our culture and provide a firm foundation for how we encourage our boys to go beyond themselves and care for the needs of others, particularly those without a voice and those who are marginalised.

Through encounters with our many service programs, boys will make choices about the dignity of all people, ask the deeper questions, seek justice and discover the rewards of offering their time and talents in the service of others.

We believe that a focus on service will enable our boys to become more generous, compassionate, and outwardfocused individuals who will go on to make a difference in the world.

AVisionfortheFuture: 2023-2026StrategicIntent

LET US MAINTAIN OUR FOCUS ON THE INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS AND HOW BEST WE PREPARE EACH OF THEM.

As we move further into the 21st Century we are struck constantly by the need to plan and prioritise in our educational provision, in response to the world’s ever changing circumstances and demands. It is important to recall however that we are not only preparing our students for that world, but most particularly preparing them to respond in action to the needs of the world that they will inevitably encounter.

The Strategic Plan 2023 - 2026 strengthens the College’s commitment to build on the achievements from the previous Strategic Plan and has been developed so it is broad enough to ensure that it will be relevant, yet specific enough to provide tangible guidance.

As we plan strategically for the decades ahead, let us maintain our focus on the individual students and how best we prepare each of them. The Marist tradition is one which engages in culture, respecting the dignity of all and striving to make Jesus known and loved by forming young men of strong minds and gentle hearts.
