WORLD CLASS ENTERTAINMENT FOR A WORLD CLASS CITY Here at the Theatre Royal we pride ourselves on our diverse programme and this forthcoming season is one of the most varied and interesting yet. We begin in November with the unmissable production of West Side Story, a worldwide sell-out and a deserving recipient of the Scotland’s Broadway brand. Scotland’s Broadway brings the very best Ambassador Theatre Group productions to Glasgow, helping make the city one of the most cosmopolitan in Europe and a top destination for tourists. One other show carries the prestigious title: the recent West End and Broadway production of the brilliant comedy Boeing Boeing, visiting in March. The multi award-winning West End production of Cabaret starring Samantha Barks and Wayne Sleep opens at the end of March and Singin’ in the Rain, another top-class production of an iconic title, comes to the Theatre Royal in September. We also welcome our usual range of dance, opera, drama, comedy, children’s events and an ice show. Dance highlights are Scottish Ballet’s Christmas production of The Sleeping Beauty, the return of the hugely popular community dance festival Go Dance, the hilarious Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo and the Richard Alston Dance Company. Scottish Ballet is of course not the only national company represented in the season: Scottish Opera presents La Traviata, Così fan Tutte and Manon whilst the National Theatre of Scotland joins forces with Dundee Rep to bring their superb production of Ibsen’s Peer Gynt to Glasgow. The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged)

After delighting audiences in January 08, Go Dance is returning to the stage of the Theatre Royal in January 09.

Sat 21 Feb 7.30pm It's apocalypse now as the three cultural guerrillas of The Reduced Shakespeare Company set their reductive sites on The Bible. Can bolts of lightning be far behind?

It provides a rare opportunity to experience Prokofiev’s early masterpiece: a riotous combination of satire, wit, surrealism, fantasy, romance and fairytale, suitable for young and old alike.

Yes, it's an affectionate, irreverent roller coaster ride from fig leaves to Final Judgment as the boys tackle the great theological questions: Did Adam and Eve have navels? Did Moses really look like Charlton Heston? And why isn't the word ‘phonetic’ spelled the way it sounds?

Lee Blakeley directs, fresh from his success with Scottish Opera’s Night at the Chinese Opera, and the Orchestra of Scottish Opera provides the fireworks from the pit!

Whether you are Catholic or Atheist, Muslim or Jew, Protestant or Purple People Eater, you will be tickled by the RSC's romp through old time religion. Remember... Someone is watching.

This fantastic community dance festival is fast becoming an unmissable event in the Scottish dance calendar, showcasing the talent of over 1000 dancers across Scotland and representing the best work from colleges, dance schools and community groups. Reflecting a diverse mix of dance styles, including contemporary, street, ballet, jazz and hip hop and performed by dancers of all ages, Go Dance 09 will offer a different programme each night. Created by a host of talented and dedicated choreographers and teachers each evening will be truly fabulous, packed with energy, creativity and passion. If you love dance don’t miss it!

EXHILARATING DANCE BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

LEGENDARY CHILLING THRILLER WINNER OF 19 MAJOR AWARDS ‘Stunning. Blazingly original stage imagery. Dark and gleaming and elegant’ New York Times

RICHARD ALSTON DANCE COMPANY Richard Alston, who this season celebrates the 40th anniversary of his first choreography, is widely recognised as Britain’s most musical choreographer - every step he makes is a response to a particular piece of music. The importance Alston attaches to music gives his work a unique combination of accessibility and depth. The Alston company’s 2009 appearances at the Theatre Royal, following their critically acclaimed visit in April 08, include two of Alston’s most explosive works. Blow Over is performed to Philip Glass’s exhilarating Songs From Liquid Days with lyrics by Suzanne Vega and Paul Simon. This isn’t Glass in cool, serene mood, oh no - this is music of mesmerising accumulative power, and the dancers have to fly to keep up, in great leaping arcs of energy. Blow Over was greeted by standing ovations and five star reviews at its recent World Premiere. Also in the programme, a revival of Alston’s seminal Movements From Petrushka, to Stravinsky’s own piano arrangement of his music played live on stage by the remarkable young pianist Jason Ridgway. 10
