VIKING 82 CONVERTIBLE Our new flagship is coming your way. When the Viking 82 Convertible premieres at the 2009 Yacht and Brokerage Show in Miami, Florida, it will raise the bar to exhilarating new heights of engineering excellence. With its sleek pro le, dramatic window lines and lush, black mask, the breathtaking 82 Convertible will be the nest looking Viking ever produced. The 82 Convertible will easily rival the accommodations of a luxurious motor yacht but the engineroom, the ying bridge and the cockpit, will reveal the heart and soul of a tournament contender. Viking has proven beyond any doubt that a large convertible can compete on the tournament circuit successfully, especially when designed by a company with the talent and skills of our engineering, design and production teams. Our groups constantly challenge the work we do with a philosophy that encourages our commitment to try harder, to create then recreate, to keep at a project until we are satis ed we have reached the peak and then reach for a little more. It requires a lot of effort to do things this way, but it is the Viking tradition and we are proud of it. So understandably we are most proud of the 82 Convertible for it showcases a boat building heritage spanning more than four decades. Throughout the yacht, feature after feature demonstrates our resolve to build a better boat everyday. wells, tackle stowage, under mounted bait freezers, a transom door and virtually anything you can think of will be there. The observation mezzanine, shielded from spray and sun by the ying bridge overhang is inviting and a most comfortable place to wait out the next bite. The mezzanine provides engineroom access as well and depending upon the interior you select, the entrance doubles as a private route to the crew quarters. The 82 will be offered with open bridge and enclosed bridge arrangements. The open bridge features a center console station with three Murray Products helm seats with teak ladder backs as standard equipment providing excellent sightlines for cruising and shing. There is room to install three 17-inch monitors behind clear acrylic panels inside the console, with additional compartments for communication equipment. More stowage space is available beneath the helm. Forward of the helm is built-in refrigeration and a U-shaped settee and table. Air conditioning also will be available on the open bridge. Viking’s track record for building enclosed bridge convertibles is unmatched and the 82 Enclosed Bridge Convertible will follow suite. The climate-controlled command station is a perfect complement to the deck house and beautiful sheer with matching window lines for a seamless appearance. Often referred to as a second salon, the area abaft the helm will feature a raised L-shaped sofa, a

teak table, a wet bar with refrigeration and an entertainment system including a at screen television. A staircase from the salon provides comfortable access from inside the yacht, while a powdercoated ladder from the cockpit allows exterior egress. Both helms will be equipped with power-assisted hydraulic steering and electronic engine controls for ease of maneuverability. Additionally, an aft station is standard on the 82 Enclosed Bridge. The spacious salon, entered through an electric sliding door on the mezzanine deck, is a blend of form and function with a backdrop of gorgeous, sculpted teak joinery. Available in a choice of high gloss and satin nishes, including uted teak valances, the theme centers around three distinct gathering areas for guests and family. A 52-inch plasma television rises from the cabinetry on the starboard side, matched to a home entertainment center which includes a Bose Lifestyle 48 system with custom surround sound. The island style galley adds to the expanse of the salon and is out tted with world class appliances, including Sub-Zero refrigeration, a dishwasher, a trash compactor, an electric range with cooktop and a microwave. There is plenty of stowage, plus a walk-in pantry ideal for long range cruising. Opposite the galley a plush dinette is perfect for formal dining. Two below deck layouts will be available to provide maximum exibility in lush accommodations. The full beam master suite is a palatial retreat; private, luxurious, a truly distinctive environment for the owner. An alternative plan places the master suite forward and allows for private crew access from the engineroom. Both plans feature ve staterooms each with a private head and stall shower. A day head is in the salon in either arrangement. From an engineering standpoint, the Viking 82 Convertible is unique. The engineroom is nished in gleaming white Awlgrip and a choice of Caterpillar C 32-A and MTU Series 2000-V16 M93 with electronic trolling valves for slow speed and trolling opera-

tions are offered. Engines are mounted on Viking’s exclusive web frame structural-steel beds. Powder-coated for appearance and durability, the beds are bolted to intermediate transversals to minimize vibration and ensure drive train alignment. Nibral S class propellers with an advanced cambered design blade section will provide smart acceleration and optimal performance. A Delta T ventilation system with thermostatically controlled supply and discharge fans supply a clean, uninterrupted ow of fresh air to the engines. The Delta T system also provides advanced water intrusion suppression to keep out salt and is equipped with automatically deployed re suppression dampeners. Resin infused fuel, water and waste tanks are designed to mirror the hull bottom to maximize capacity and sit low to reduce the yacht’s center of gravity. Tanks are berglassed into place adding additional strength and structure to the hull. The standard equipment list is substantial and demonstrates Viking’s commitment to engineering for real world conditions. Air conditioning is chilled water with a capacity of eight tons in two four ton units for total climate control throughout the yacht. There are individual controls in each of the staterooms and in the salon to dial in the ideal comfort range regardless of the yacht’s location. A customized sea water supply via a sea chest enhances the system’s performance with supply and discharge manifolds to allow for individual chilling service and freshwater ushing. The system also provides a reverse cycle for heat. A hydraulic bow thruster with controls in the single lever handles will be provided on the open bridge convertible, while a joystick control will be used on the enclosed bridge convertibles. The yacht also will have an underwater exhaust system to reduce engine back pressure, cleaner exhaust discharge and improved use of the area beneath the cockpit sole. A pair of 27.5 kW Onan E-QD gensets provide an abundance of electrical power and a technologically advanced electrical system utilizing Moritz OctoPlex monitoring and control panels will re-

duce the amount of wiring to save weight and simplify installation, accessibility and usage. The new wiring system will eliminate bulky track boxes in favor of concealed runs. To produce a cleaner look, wiring will appear at the point of use and clearly demonstrates one more facet of Viking’s mantra to “build a better boat everyday.” Countless other features about the Viking 82 will set it apart as the lead favorite in large convertibles. Our $1 million ve-axis pro ler, the largest of its type in the marine industry, was used to produce the foam plugs to manufacture many of the molds including those for the ying bridge and command helm console, air box vents, deck and house. The computer operated pro ler excels at cutting with surgical accuracy the numerous intricacies of the design that in the past were painstakingly done by hand. To enhance performance and achieve better engine and propulsion ef ciencies, the design, engineering and production teams explored various avenues to shave off unnecessary poundage and were successful in bringing the deckhouse and hull weights to fruition well within the desired parameters. Viking has been using end grain balsa as a coring material for better than 20 years without a single construction failure. Our con dence in this material led us to explore other areas where we could take advantage of the product’s various attributes for stiffness, strength, lighter weight and durability in the development of the 82 Convertible. Some examples of these weight saving achievements include using vacuum bagged high-strength Baltek anti-fungal coring in the highly loaded bottom panels of the running surface. It should be noted that end grain balsa has tremendous shear strength and in the event of an accidental grounding our experience has been that any damage is con ned to a local area and does not compromise the surrounding core and laminates providing a superior measure of safety and easy repairability. Similarly, low density Baltek balsa used in the hull sides, deck and superstructure, provides the requisite stiffness and strength with the bene t of reduced weight. Structural sandwich panels of lightweight Baltek foam were used for bulkheads in lieu of heavier plywood, and to produce the longitudinal and transverse frames employed in internal grid sections. By selecting these speci c construction core materials, the lamination schedules were optimized with higher strength biaxial and triaxial knitted fabrics which absorb less resin, producing a core laminate of unequalled physical properties.
