PORT PERSONALITY

JONATHAN MACKIE How did you get involved in the marine industry?

What is the most important item to always keep on a boat?

In the Fall of 2019, I started working at The Yards Marina, just as the Nationals made it to the World Series. I was immediately impressed with the sheer volume of enthusiastic Nats fans who came to the games by boat. Initially, I thought that I landed myself a cool part-time job at The Yards. A few opportunities later, I landed a cool career at the marina.

Always bring along enough life jackets and drinking water for everyone on board.

What makes your marina special or different than other marinas? The Navy Yard, the Bullpen, Anacostia River Trail and Nationals Stadium are all unique places to see. When you’re docked here, it’s amazing to hear the crack of the bat connecting with the ball from the stadium a few seconds before it’s broadcast on live television. And unlike other marinas, The Yards feels like an actual neighborhood. What is the one thing that everyone should do or see at your marina? Don’t miss walking on the Anacostia River Trial section that borders the Navy Yard Campus. Describe the first time you remember being on a boat. I was a very small kid at the time. I was in Ocean City, MD, with my family. My aunt’s friend took me and my siblings out on his boat after dinner. I still remember the beautiful sunset!

GENERAL MANAGER The Yards Marina, Washington, DC

marinalife.com | THE YARDS MARINA

Describe the perfect meal. What would you eat and where would you be? I’d like to eat a Maryland steamed crab feast with all the fixings spread on a table in my backyard. What do you enjoy doing on your day off? I really like to travel when I can. Last year, I went to Crater Lake in Oregon, where I hiked to a summit and then went swimming in the lake. Also, I have been slowly finishing my undergraduate degree, so I take one or two business classes during the late fall and early spring. What’s the best safety tip for a new boater? Be sure to check the weather radar before you get underway. What is the oddest watercraft you’ve seen cruise into the marina? I am a big fan of Mildred Belle, which is a restored mid20th century trawler. Living Classrooms operates the boat and uses it for educational and environmental purposes.

Sitting on his boat at the docks, a guest at The Yards described being so close to the Washington National’s baseball stadium that “We would hear the crack of the bat connecting with the ball from the stadium a few seconds before it was on live television in front of us.” The Yard’s dock master Jon remembers the excitement and energy that overtook the neighborhood as the Nats trounced the Astros in the 2019 World Series, their first win in nearly a century. Welcome to The Yards’ Marina, situated on a six-mile stretch overlooking the Anacostia River that runs from the east end of a popular pedestrian bridge to the Washington Navy Yard. A gateway to some of the best of DC, it offers live sports, foodie restaurants, local breweries and winemakers, and the majesty of the nation’s founders in nearby monuments. The up-and-coming area known just as “The Yards” is a trendy spot that combines life on the water with urban renewal. Take a stroll along the Anacostia River, which spans a mere 8.5 miles, but whose watershed continues for 176 square miles across the District and into Maryland. Like many urban rivers, the Anacostia was long neglected, but since construction of the Nationals Park in 2006, the waterway has undergone a slow and steady renaissance.

groomed dogs, families picnicking on the grassy riverbank, bridal parties smiling for the cameras, and couples who just want to stroll in the sunshine along the boardwalk. The diversity of the city can also be found at The Yards’ docks, which are chosen by many boat owners for its community feel. During warm spring and summer nights, the park puts on a watery show as visitors ogle Dancing Fountains, a wading pool with colored lights shooting up into the sky. A free summer concert series on Friday nights offers a slew of great bands, food and beverages, and a variety of restaurants within a brief walk. The music includes many genres, and summer’s line-up is a mix of country, folk, alternative rock, funk and more. Come prepared to dance.

Before building the baseball stadium for the Nationals, developers and environmentalists agreed to clean up the Anacostia and create a green waterfront community. The Anacostia Riverkeeper, a nonprofit that developed programs with Living Classrooms to study and improve the waterway, is a persistent presence at The Yards’ docks. The Riverkeeper focuses on mitigating storm water damage, removing plastic from the river, and monitoring water quality and wildlife along the shore. To explore the Anacostia in a small boat, the Ballpark Boathouse offers kayaks and canoes for rent in the spring and summer. You can paddle around historic Anacostia and check out sites such as the Capitol, Washington Navy Yard and Fort McNair on a two-hour guided tour.

An Upfront Glimpse of Naval History

Walk over to the Washington Navy Yard, the U.S. Navy’s oldest shore establishment, authorized in 1799 by its first secretary Benjamin Stoddert. Today it is home to the Chief of Naval Operations and headquarters for the Naval History and Heritage Command.

Dining & Drinking along the Waterfront The great thing about the Yards’ revival is new restaurants debut often. Here are some favorites: Gatsby, a diner inspired by the greasy spoons of the 1920s, improves on the food while preserving the art deco ambiance of an original American diner. You find throwback cocktails, vegan salads and homemade cakes like mom made from scratch. Happy hour starts at 3:00 p.m. with a cocktail menu that does not disappoint. (202-817-3005, gatsbyrestaurant.com) Osteria Morini offers a dining experience in the heart of the DC waterfront. Located near Yards Park, it doles out authentic Italian cuisine of rich pastas and fresh fish as well as cocktails in a sophisticated outdoor setting. The sunset from its patio is worth the trip. (202-484-0660, osteriamorini.com/washington-dc) The Point, which opened in spring 2021 on Buzzard Point, blends robust flavors from open-flame cooking with fresh seafood. The contemporary design, tranquil open-air patio and fire pits make for a relaxing evening any time of year. (202-948-2522, thepointdc.com) Agua 301 gets it right on all fronts. The food is excellent, the setting is gorgeous with lots of room between tables, and standout dishes include short rib mole chichilo and a tasty seviche. (202-484-0301, agua301.com) Salt Line at the base of Nationals Stadium is the go-to place for oysters. The nautical themed restaurant has a riverside patio and some of the best seafood in the area. (202-506-2368, thesaltline.com) Mi Vida, run by author and acclaimed Chef Roberto Santibañez, showcases the Mexican cuisine he has perfected over three decades. (202-516-4656, mividamexico.com) 12

In its early years, the Navy Yard was known as the country’s largest shipbuilding and ship-fitting facility, but it no longer holds that honor. About 22 vessels were constructed on the Yard, ranging from 70-foot boats to the USS Minnesota, a 246-foot steam frigate. The Navy Yard played a pivotal role during the War of 1812, as a strategic link for defense of the Capital city. When the British brushed aside an American force at Bladensburg, MD, then marched into Washington, DC, American troops were badly outnumbered. Before evacuating, English troops burned the Navy Yard to the ground. Nautical history from the Revolutionary War to present day can be found at the National Museum of the U.S. Navy on the grounds. A new building is in progress so check to see if it’s open before you go.

Take Me Out to a Ball Game

For a true Washingtonian experience, walk over and immerse yourself in baseball at Nationals Park. On the way into a game make a quick stop outside the Home Plate Gate to see three statues of long-ago DC baseball icons. The figure of Josh Gibson, who starred for the Washington-area Homestead Grays and many considered the Black Babe Ruth, is near pitcher Walter “Big Train” Johnson who helped deliver DC’s first World Series win in 1924. Frank Howard, a 6’7” player who topped 40 home runs for three straight seasons with the Washington Senators, is also among the local sports legends. After winning the 2019 World Series, the Nationals team has come into its own, and games are filled with excitement. Watch stars of today Max Scherzer, one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball, and Juan Soto, an incredible hitter, carry on the city’s legacy of baseball. Looking for fun American kitsch? During the fourth inning at Nats games, six jumbo-headed mascots costumed as U.S. presidents race around the field.

Enjoy a Riverside Pub Crawl The Yards Marina is uniquely located at the waterfront with stellar views of the urban skyline. Within easy walking distance, sipping selections range from craft brews to aged bourbon.

If you prefer soccer, head to Audi Field where the Anacostia River, Washington Channel and Potomac River

Bluejacket Brewing Co. is a traditional brewpub with a rotating menu of 25 beers including five English cask styles served at room temperature. Housed in a former munition’s factory, Bluejacket offers tastings and its own take on classic bar food. Tours are available. (202-484-9210, districtwinery.com) Walters Sports Bar, just 250 feet from Nationals Park with 30+ TVs and 24 self-pour drafts, shows games from around the country and the world. Craft beers with names like Zombie Dust Pale Ale from Munster, IN, or White Rascal Wheat Beer from Boulder, CO, offer a taste of far-flung micro-breweries. (202-499-3919, waltersdc.com) Bardo Brewing occupies two acres of waterfront fun across from the Home Plate Gate at Nats Stadium and one block from Audi Field. Bring your dog and sample a variety of craft beer made on site. (762-233-7070, bardo.beer)

Atlas Brew Works is a neighborhood production brewery in Northeast DC that crafts artisanal beer in 20-barrel batches and serves them at its completely solar-powered facility. If you want an ultimate urban sports experience, head to the Anacostia River Trail, which covers the 20-mile waterfront and is open to bikers, skaters, runners, hikers and leashed dogs. Check out points of interest along the way such as the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, the only National Park dedicated to aquatic plants, and a National Historic Site honoring Frederick Douglass. When your pup tires of his leash, take a break at the local dog park with expansive views of the river. Transportation options near the Yards include ride shares, the Metro at Navy Yard Ballpark and Capital Bikeshare. If you prefer to walk, the ballpark is a quick stroll from The Yards.

Nearby Attractions: A Day or Night at the Monuments No visit to Washington, DC, is complete without taking time to visit its monuments. A 10-minute taxi or slightly longer bike ride takes you to the park where the U.S. 14

Capitol Building sits atop the city, giving a nod to all the generations that have come before us. Monuments to presidents Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln provide a look back at the country’s founding and the men who risked their lives bringing democracy and the end of slavery to the nation. Others honor Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Franklin Delano Roosevelt for their incredible contributions to society. The marble statue of a contemplative Abraham Lincoln is an enduring symbol of unity, strength and wisdom. Monuments to women are fewer in number but worth mentioning. The Vietnam Women’s Memorial and the Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial are notable, as is the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument honoring suffragists. Remember to visit the memorials to those lost during Korean, WWII and Vietnam wars. The U.S. Capitol Building offers much to see and do inside and on its grounds. The Library of Congress, the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Botanic Garden are also wonderful options. For a quick bite to eat, head over to Capitol Hill’s Eastern Market, reminiscent of large city markets often found in early America and Europe. Local lore says no building in DC can be taller than the Washington Monument, but that’s an urban myth. The Height of Buildings Act was created after the 1894 construction of the Cairo Hotel, whose enormity convinced officials to band together and develop height restrictions for all DC buildings.
