PORT PERSONALITY
Henry Lautenschlager
ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER North Coast Harbor, Cleveland, OH
How did you get involved in the marine industry?
Describe the perfect meal. What would you eat and where would you be?
Since my early teen years, I’ve been around boats with family and friends and have always been a fan of anything water related. As a result, I’ve been a licensed boater and fisherman for about ten years now.
I’d go for any type of seafood served fresh and right by the water. For a great dining experience, it’s hard to beat the ocean breeze, warm weather and the daily catch by local fishermen. What do you enjoy doing on your day off?
What makes your marina special or different than other marinas? The location at North Coast Harbor is unique as you step off the docks and immediately enter the heart of downtown Cleveland, where you find three major sporting teams and stadiums within walking distance, food for everyone, great nightlife, and attractions for the whole family. What is the one attraction that everyone should do or see at your marina? The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is conveniently located directly behind the marina, and I highly recommend it for fans of all types of music, not just rock and roll. Describe the first time you remember being on a boat. My earliest memory is when I was around five or six years old on boats learning to water ski and wakeboard on any lake I could get to with my family. What is the most important item to always keep on a boat?
Hanging out with my dog is always a good time. I’m also a big foodie and love trying new dishes and cuisines everywhere I go. What’s the best safety tip you can give to a new boater? Only go as far as you are comfortable. Don’t overdo it and don’t overwhelm yourself. Try to learn as you go along and take on more challenges and skills with time. Most important, always enjoy yourself. Where is your favorite place to visit by boat? The Florida Keys. What is the most fun part of your work? I love being directly on the water in such a beautiful spot and interacting with boaters who come in from all over the country.

“We’re located right in the heart of downtown on the East 9th Street Pier,” says Henry Lautenschlager, Assistant General Manager at North Coast Harbor Marina. “You step off the docks, and you’re immediately surrounded by food, parks, nightlife, sporting events and more, all within walking distance. Coming on land for the food and drink in Cleveland is an experience in and of itself.”

The city recently appeared on a National Geographic list of the 21 best places to visit in the world, one of only two other U.S. destinations. Offering visitors a combination of waterfront and walkability, a short stroll from the marina up East 9th Street and a right turn on Superior Avenue brings you to Public Square and the heart of downtown. Here you’ll find a dizzying array of bars, restaurants, clubs, hotels, shopping malls, Willard Park, Cleveland Public Library, House of Blues, and JACK Cleveland Casino. Whatever kind of entertainment or epicurean adventure you seek, it’s right here.
Sports fans can catch the Cavs, Indians and Browns ... all within an easy stroll from the Lake Erie waterfront. A few blocks west and you’re in the Flats, the city’s riverside recreation district and home to the Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica’s summer concert series, featuring acts such as Barenaked Ladies, Goo Goo Dolls, Alicia Keys and David Gray. And let’s not forget the Great Lakes Science Center and the city’s centerpiece: the I.M. Pei-designed Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, both literally steps away from the marina. A wealth of things to do, all at your fingertips.

Cleveland’s renaissance is in full bloom these days. The city’s revitalized downtown and lakefront are popular destinations among residents and day-trippers from the suburbs, as well as a growing number of out-of-towners sampling all Cleveland has to offer. Yes, Cleveland is cooking, and Oasis Marinas at North Coast Harbor is a key ingredient in the mix.

The Best Location in the Nation Cleveland’s fortunes have always been tied to its strategic position on the southern shore of Lake Erie, which affects the weather, defines leisure activities and facilitates commerce. When Moses Cleaveland came from Connecticut in 1796 to survey the state’s Western Reserve (part of its “sea-to-sea grant” negotiated after the Pennamite-Yankee Wars of the late 1700s), he founded the city that bears (most of ) his name where the Cuyahoga River empties into Lake Erie. Its eastern shoreline forms a natural protective barrier, and the area’s 600-foot-high inland bluffs offer commanding views for miles in every direction.

Cleveland quickly became an essential port on the Great Lakes, an ideally located manufacturing center for importing raw materials and exporting industrial goods that were sent by ship via the Erie Canal and St. Lawrence River to the nation’s East Coast population centers. The Ohio & Erie Canal’s opening in the 1830s connected Cleveland to the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, further enhancing its position as “The Best Location in the Nation,” as the lakefront city was known in the early 20th century, being within a day’s journey of more than half the population of both the United States and Canada.

Sunset, Sunrise Some say you’ve never seen a sunset until you’ve witnessed one on Lake Erie. They are, in a word, breathtaking. They’re a fitting companion to the new day that’s dawning in Cleveland — spectacular sunsets bring on an equally spectacular sunrise. Like Cleveland, Lake Erie offers its own array of activities and attractions, and Oasis Marinas at North Coast Harbor presents the perfect jumping off point for aquatic pursuits.
“The marina is immersed in the heart of the city, located right off the open water,” says Lautenschlager. “We’re directly in front of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on land and just east of the steamship Mather on the water. That’s what makes us such a popular destination for visiting boaters.” Oasis Marinas at North Coast Harbor is in perfect proximity to a multitude of Cleveland activities, amenities and adventures. Whatever kind of fun you’re looking for, we’ve got it right here!
Lake Erie thrives with perch, walleye, steelhead and bass. Savvy fishermen know that Erie’s fish populations are the most abundant of the Great Lakes partly because of the lake’s relatively mild temperatures and plentiful supply of plankton. Steelhead Alley Outfitters and Midtown Fishing Charters are just two of the many options available for anglers seeking local experts’ advice and assistance. Kayakers find a lot to like about the area too: everything from the serene surface of the upper Cuyahoga River to the more challenging chop of the Lake Erie coastline. Try River Cruiser Kayaking or Great Lakes Watersports for rentals by the hour or the day.

Visitors enjoy paddle boarding, water skiing, touring maritime attractions such as the USS Cod submarine and the William G. Mather steamship, or just relaxing on the beach at Edgewater Park. No matter what you’re doing, Cleveland and Lake Erie are inextricably linked.

FOOD & DRINK Marble Room Steaks & Raw Bar
Housed in the old National City Bank building, Marble Room opened in the cavernous, restored space in 2017, with antique fixtures, tiles and furnishings contributing to its eclectic décor. It’s the place to go for unsurpassed quality, service and charm. (216-523-7000) Described as a “hip, dimly lit cantina with wrestler decor, patio seating and creative, modern Mexican dishes,” this Ohio City establishment relies on seasonal and local ingredients. Featuring seven different guacamoles, unique small plates and interesting takes on standards like flautas, chile rellenos and carne asada, the menu is a revelation and a revolution. “If I lived in Cleveland, I would probably eat here every day,” said one recent visitor. Beef, chicken, fish, lamb and vegetable entrees and pitas offer something for everyone. An extensive wine list highlights a good selection of Lebanese wines (both red and white), and beer drinkers might want to try an Almaza, a favorite Lebanese pilsner. (216-274-1170)
