Proud to Be Green and Clean! Marinas located in busy urban areas often face challenges keeping their waterways in tip-top shape. So, when the District of Columbia started moving in a more environmentally mindful direction, National Harbor was quick to join its efforts. Its Green Initiative started with the Potomac River Keepers, stewards of the local waters who detect trouble spots and find sustainable solutions. National Harbor guests can look beyond the docks to see the keepers cruising around the basin, taking water samples and testing them in the onboard laboratory. It’s like giving the Potomac a regular check-up to make sure it’s healthy and meets quality standards. Next came a monthly community clean-up effort to pick up trash along the shoreline from May to October. What began as a group of six volunteers three years ago has blossomed into a legion of 700 participants in the past year who fill garbage bags with everything from water bottles and plastic straws to tennis balls and hubcaps. As they share their conservation success stories with friends and neighbors, the number of helpers continues to grow. The most unique green program at National Harbor addresses water pollution with a solution found in nature

— mussels. Most people think of them as a delicious dish steamed in herbs and wine. But when these black bivalves live in waterways, they filter out organisms and pollutants. They can filter gallons of water every day, and because they’re indigenous to the region, they don’t disrupt the habitat. Along the docks at National Harbor, special cages are acting as incubators for young mussels that help clean the water. The marina hopes to plant 50 million mussels in its water over the next 10 years. During your next visit, check out the new babies!

National Harbor has scheduled a dredging project for October 2022 that will allow the marina to accommodate larger boats, up to an eight-foot draft. At the project’s completion, National Harbor Marina will continue to be an iconic destination for superyachts on the Potomac. Captains and boat owners can dock with ease, at more than 400 feet of alongside dockage, while they stay and enjoy everything National Harbor has to offer. Attentive marina staff is on-site to assist with all the service offerings and can coordinate provisioning, restaurant and hotel reservations, and local transportation.

KENNY REPKA DOCKMASTER National Harbor Marina

If you didn’t work at National Harbor Marina, what would your dream job be? I would own a large enough piece of land to farm and hunt. On the property, I would have a produce stand, pumpkin patch for the fall and a tree stand just before Christmas. What is your favorite part of the day at the marina? Walking the marina first thing in the morning with a cup of coffee. It’s like the calm before the storm. What is the one attraction that every visitor should see at National Harbor? I would recommend strolling along American Way. The statues and art speak to the history of our nation, which embodies the spirit of National Harbor.

What is one of your most memorable moments at National Harbor? Every season has unique highlights, but I always enjoy the season-ending party with the team. It’s awesome to sit back and reflect on how each of them grew individually and what impact they made on the customer experience. What is the most important item to always keep on a boat? A fishing rod or beer… :) What do you like to do on your days off? I like to spend the day fishing or getting ready for hunting season.

What part of your work at the marina do you enjoy the most?

What is your favorite water sport/activity?

You absolutely can’t beat the relationships that you can build around National Harbor — the boaters, the community, my colleagues and the team. Everyone here is amazing!

What are your top three songs for a boating playlist?

Where is your favorite place to eat near your marina? The best dining spot for fresh oysters and cold local beer is at The Walrus Oyster & Ale House.

Sport fishing definitely tops my list. “Half Empty Shotgun” by Kyle Park, “Things Look Good Around Here” by Roger Creager and “A Pirate Looks at Forty” by Jimmy Buffett.

Team Bio Harrison Mertins ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER Harrison loves the outdoors and the opportunity to be on the water that comes with working at National Harbor Marina. His favorite parts of the job are his interactions with guests, helping to make their day special. In his downtime, Harrison enjoys working out, spending time with friends and family, and making a day of hiking Great Falls trails along the Potomac River. Harrison has been busy restoring his newly acquired 13-foot Classic Boston Whaler.

National Harbor The Pride of the Potomac

By Susan Elnicki Wade Author of Crab Decks & Tiki Bars of the Chesapeake Bay

A 17-foot tall aluminum arm stretches toward the heavens. Nearby a colossal hand, knee and foot emerge next to the yawning head of a giant who struggles to rise from his subterranean slumber. Laughing children scamper in the sand between his body parts, tickle his toes and marvel at the massive waterfront statue entitled “The Awakening.” This remarkable work of art is an appropriate centerpiece for National Harbor, which has transformed and energized one of the premier destinations along the East Coast. Thanks to the vision of developer Milton Peterson, nearly 12 million visitors arrive annually to enjoy a spectacular waterfront experience on the Potomac River.

Prelude to the Present The story of this scenic property reaches back hundreds of years to when the region was populated by Algonquin tribes. Early 17th century settlements flourished by using the navigable Potomac River for trade, food and transportation. Farmers coaxed a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables from the fertile soil, and watermen pulled delicacies from the waves. During the Civil War, troops, supplies and arms floated downstream to battle fields.

The 350 acres where National Harbor stands began as part of a several thousand-acre land grant to John Addison, who immigrated here in 1667 and built a prosperous tobacco farm. In 1927 Sumner Wells, an ambassador to Cuba and advisor to President Franklin Roosevelt, bought some of the property, erected a stately mansion and entertained dignitaries on the grounds. After his passing, the footprint for National Harbor returned to a serene sanctuary for wildlife. National Harbor Marina

13

A Charmed Riverside Retreat National Harbor is conveniently located 10 miles away from the Washington Monument and the first U.S. president’s home in Mount Vernon and five miles from historic Alexandria, VA. You can join the cars zipping along the Woodrow Wilson Bridge or catch the water taxi to reach these destinations. Or you can take a turn on the 180-foot tall Capital Wheel to admire them from a distance and scope out the Waterfront District from above. The Flight Deck lounge at the Ferris wheel’s base ensures no guests get thirsty.

Just outside of Washington, DC, this underutilized property caught the attention of Peterson Company, which bought the land in 1984. At what seemed like the blink of an eye, a new marina, buildings and tree-lined streets appeared. In 2008, Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center opened as the largest hotel between New Jersey and Florida. Tanger Outlets shopping center was launched in 2013, and the Capital Wheel started spinning in 2014. MGM National Harbor first welcomed guests to its casino in 2016.

14

marinalife.com | National Harbor Marina

The atmosphere along the shore is festive and lively. Marina staff extend a warm welcome to boats up to 150 feet and offer a gamut of first-class amenities that make boaters smile — security gate, free Wi-Fi, fuel, pump-out and more. You will find something for everyone at every stage of life. Parents push strollers on the pier past firstdate couples and seniors tossing crackers to ducks dawdling in the waves. Water lovers can become members of Freedom Boat Club at National Harbor and gain access to a fleet of boats to cruise the surrounding waterways on their own (and take advantage of the 300 reciprocal locations). To create a vibrant cultural scene, National Harbor invested about $11 million in public art, and MGM added another $12 million to the indoor and outdoor collections. “The

Awakening” is not the only interactive statue on the premises. Most of the art is approachable, and you are encouraged to play with it and take selfies. An informational tour accessible by phone shares the stories of all the works. Favorites include life-like statues of famous figures: Abraham Lincoln, Henry Ford, Rosie the Riveter, Louis Armstrong, Marilyn Monroe and America’s Team of service men and women from each branch of the U.S. military forces. Year-round events and festivals — such as Cherry Blossom, Water Lantern, Crab & Beer, Chesapeake Oyster & Wine Festivals, and the summer concert series Rock’n Raftup — make every day feel like a holiday. Movies on the Potomac presents free films under the stars on Thursday and Sunday nights in the spring and summer. MGM National Harbor is more than an electrifying place to test your luck at poker, slots and roulette. Its theater showcases national acts for all generations from Chicago and Gladys Knight to Jon Bellion and Mariah Carey. (See a list of events on page 17.)

watering feasts. Cuisines range from take-out Maryland crab cakes that you can devour on the dock to juicy steaks served on tables draped with white linens. With 40 eateries to choose from, nobody goes home hungry. Nightlife features clubs with everything from dueling pianos to a mechanical bull. It’s not unusual to have so much fun at National Harbor that you don’t want to leave. They’ve got that covered, too. With eight hotels, stay as long as you like and let the staff pamper you like royalty.

Fitbit wearers watch their steps soar at National Harbor, because they encounter myriad of activities to keep them in motion. You can bike or stroll along the harbor walking trail to get different perspectives of the waterfront and marina, or rent a paddleboard, kayak or pedal boat for fitness on the waves. Wearing comfy shoes is a good idea if you’re an avid shopper, with 160 stores ready to accommodate your fashion desires from casual attire to high-end designs. The Nation’s River A BOUNTIFUL CATCH IN HISTORIC WATERS

By Capt. Steve Chaconas, National Bass Guide Service, SEOPA, nationalbass@aol.com Native Americans, settlers and George Washington harvested fish from the Potomac River for centuries. In the late 1800s, residents stocked the river with largemouth bass. By the 1970s, bass angling began to take off when subaquatic vegetation returned. All the top professional bass fishing circuits have visited the river. Thanks to the region’s moderate climate, you can cast a line into the Potomac’s tidal fisheries nearly year-round, as the river rarely ices over. The major forage includes shad and crawfish. Fish are found in shallow areas with water up to five feet deep, and you can catch them with a variety of lures in grass, pads and old wooden barges.

16

marinalife.com | National Harbor Marina

While you’re on the water waiting for fish to take the bait, enjoy the scenery along the river. History surrounds the Potomac with views of Mount Vernon, Fort Washington and the Nation’s Capital. Nature coexists as bald eagles take off within sight of Reagan National flight patterns. Whatever your favorite season or style of angling, the Potomac can provide memorable fishing experiences to enhance your visit to National Harbor.
