Proud to Be Green and Clean! Marinas located in busy urban areas often face challenges keeping their waterways in tip-top shape. So, when the District of Columbia started moving in a more environmentally mindful direction, National Harbor was quick to join its efforts. Its Green Initiative started with the Potomac River Keepers, stewards of the local waters who detect trouble spots and find sustainable solutions. National Harbor guests can look beyond the docks to see the keepers cruising around the basin, taking water samples and testing them in the onboard laboratory. It’s like giving the Potomac a regular check-up to make sure it’s healthy and meets quality standards. Next came a monthly community clean-up effort to pick up trash along the shoreline from May to October. What began as a group of six volunteers has blossomed into a legion of 70 collectors who fill garbage bags with everything from water bottles and plastic straws to

tennis balls and hubcaps. As they share their conservation success stories with friends and neighbors, the number of helpers continues to grow. The most unique green program at National Harbor addresses water pollution with a solution found in nature — mussels. Most people think of them as a delicious dish steamed in herbs and wine. But when these black bivalves live in waterways, they filter out organisms and pollutants. They can filter gallons of water every day, and because they’re indigenous to the region, they don’t disrupt the habitat. Along the docks at National Harbor, special cages are acting as incubators for young mussels that help clean the water. The marina hopes to plant 5 million mussels in its water over the next 10 years. During your next visit, check out the new babies!

Michael Bannigan

General Manager

Marine Service Associate

For more than 15 years, Kenny has excelled in the hospitality industry. He began serving the National Harbor Marina in October 2018. Kenny's goal is to create a fun and energetic atmosphere at the marina, while maintaining the highest level of customer service on the Potomac River. When not at the marina, Kenny typically enjoys family time with his wife and son. Kenny also loves the outdoors, hunting and fishing.

Mark Woodard Assistant General Manager As a valuable new member of the marina team, Mark likes to keep busy on the docks every day and year-round. On his day off, he enjoys spending time with loved ones, playing soccer, fishing and watching the Washington Capitals. During the cool offseason, Mark is a frequent gym-goer, which can be a time-consuming hobby. He also loves to try new foods and visit new places, such as his dream trip to Aruba by boat to visit the wild flamingos. During the summer, you can find him with the team on the docks where the weather is nice, boaters are happy, and life is good.

8

National Harbor Marina

Mike brings to the Oasis team a lifetime of boating experience that helped prepare him for a job at National Harbor Marina. Going out on the water with family members and eventually working on boats has given him a strong understanding of what customers need. His favorite part of the job is meeting new people, because he believes that getting to hear a new person’s story is always a great experience. When not at work, he enjoys travel and good food. The perfect meal for him is a panini with bacon, Brie and cranberries with a craft cider on the side, which he’d eat while sitting on the beach in North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

Superyachts National Harbor Marina is a wonderful destination, with more than 400 feet of alongside dockage, making it an ideal stop for super yachts on the Potomac River. Captains and boat owners love to dock with ease, while they stay and enjoy everything that National Harbor has to offer. The attentive marina staff will be on-site to assist with all of our service offerings, and can coordinate provisioning, restaurant and hotel reservations, and local transportation.

Port Personality KENNY REPKA, GENERAL MANAGER National Harbor, MD

What is your favorite memory of being on a boat? I can think of countless times of being out on different boats, usually fishing. But my favorite these days is going home to Texas, spending time with my dad and watching my son reel in everything that the Gulf of Mexico can provide. What brought you to this marina? National Harbor is a unique location. It’s got fastpaced, high-touch customer service and is always looking for ways to wow guests by going above and beyond. I’m always up for a challenge and thrive in an environment like this. So, I guess you could say this marina was calling my name. What part of your work is the most fun? You absolutely can’t beat the relationships that you

can build around National Harbor — the boaters, the community, my colleagues and the team! What is the oddest watercraft you’ve seen cruise into the marina? One day a squad of assault boats from a government agency came in for lunch. That was very unexpected. Where is your favorite place to visit by boat? Anywhere the fish are biting! What’s the best safety tip you can give to a new boater? Make sure to have a first-aid kit on the boat. So many different things can occur while you’re on the water, and prepping is key!

National Harbor

The Pride of the Potomac

By Susan Elnicki Wade Author of Crab Decks & Tiki Bars of the Chesapeake Bay

A 17-foot tall aluminum arm stretches toward the heavens. Nearby a colossal hand, knee and foot emerge next to the yawning head of a giant who struggles to rise from his subterranean slumber. Laughing children scamper in the sand between his body parts, tickle his toes and marvel at the massive waterfront statue entitled “The Awakening. This remarkable work of art is an appropriate centerpiece for National Harbor, which has transformed and energized one of the premier destinations along the East Coast. Thanks to the vision of developer Milton Peterson, nearly 12 million visitors arrive annually to enjoy a spectacular waterfront experience on the Potomac River.

Prelude to the Present The story of this scenic property reaches back hundreds of years to when the region was populated by Algonquin tribes. Early 17th century settlements flourished by using the navigable Potomac River for trade, food and transportation. Farmers coaxed a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables from the fertile soil, and watermen pulled delicacies from the waves. During the Civil War, troops, supplies and arms floated downstream to battle fields. The 350 acres where National Harbor stands began as part of a several thousand-acre land grant to John Addison, who immigrated here in 1667 and built a prosperous tobacco farm. In 1927 Sumner Wells, an ambassador to Cuba and advisor to President Franklin

National Harbor Marina

Roosevelt, bought some of the property, erected a stately mansion and entertained dignitaries on the grounds. After his passing, the footprint for National Harbor returned to a serene sanctuary for wildlife. Just outside of Washington, DC, this underutilized property caught the attention of Peterson Company, which bought the land in 1984. At what seemed like the blink of an eye, a new marina, buildings and tree-lined streets appeared. In 2008, Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center opened as the largest hotel between New Jersey and Florida. Tanger Outlets shopping center was launched in 2013, and the Capital Wheel started spinning in 2014. MGM National Harbor first welcomed guests to its casino in 2016.

A Charmed Riverside Retreat National Harbor is conveniently located 10 miles away from the Washington Monument and the first U.S. president’s home in Mount Vernon and five miles from historic

Alexandria, VA. You can join the cars zipping along the Woodrow Wilson Bridge or catch the water taxi to reach these destinations. Or you can take a turn on the 180-foot tall Capital Wheel to admire them from a distance and scope out the Waterfront District from above. The Flight Deck lounge at the Ferris wheel’s base ensures no guests get thirsty. The atmosphere along the shore is festive and lively. Marina staff extend a warm welcome to boats up to 150 feet and offer a gamut of first-class amenities that make boaters smile — security gate, free Wi-Fi, fuel, pump-out and more. You will find something for everyone at every stage of life. Parents push strollers on the pier past first-date couples and seniors tossing crackers to ducks dawdling in the waves. To create a vibrant cultural scene, National Harbor invested about $11 million in public art, and MGM added another $12 million to

the indoor and outdoor collections. “The Awakening” is not the only interactive statue on the premises. Most of the art is approachable, and you are encouraged to play with it and take selfies. An informational tour accessible by phone shares the stories of all the works. Favorites include life-like statues of famous figures: Abraham Lincoln, Henry Ford, Rosie the Riveter, Louis Armstrong, Marilyn Monroe and America’s Team of service men and women from each branch of the U.S. military forces. Year-round events and festivals — such as Cherry Blossom, Water Lantern, Crab & Beer, and Chesapeake Oyster & Wine Festivals — make every day feel like a holiday. Movies on the Potomac presents free films under the stars on Thursday and Sunday nights in the spring and summer. MGM National Harbor is more than an electrifying place to test your luck at poker, slots and roulette. Its theater showcases national acts for all generations from Chicago and Gladys Knight to Jon Bellion and Mariah Carey. (See a list of events on page 19.) Fitbit wearers watch their steps soar at National Harbor, because they encounter

myriad of activities to keep them in motion. You can bike or stroll along the harbor walking trail to get different perspectives of the waterfront and marina, or rent a paddleboard, kayak or pedal boat for fitness on the waves. Wearing comfy shoes is a good idea if you’re an avid shopper, with 160 stores ready to accommodate your fashion desires from casual attire to high-end designs. Don’t worry if all this activity works up an appetite. Irresistible aromas drift out of restaurants perched on the gentle slope of Oxon Hill, as chefs concoct mouth-watering feasts. Cuisines range from take-out Maryland crab cakes that you can devour on the dock to juicy steaks served on tables draped with white linens. With 40 eateries to choose from, nobody goes home hungry. Nightlife features clubs with everything from dueling pianos to a mechanical bull.t It’s not unusual to have so much fun at National Harbor that you don’t want to leave. They’ve got that covered, too. With eight hotels, stay as long as you like and let the staff pamper you like royalty. ■

The Nation’s River A BOUNTIFUL CATCH IN HISTORIC WATERS By Capt. Steve Chaconas, National Bass Guide Service, SEOPA, nationalbass@aol.com

Native Americans, settlers and George Washington harvested fish from the Potomac River for centuries. In the late 1800s, residents stocked the river with largemouth bass. By the 1970s, bass angling began to take off when subaquatic vegetation returned. All the top professional bass fishing circuits have visited the river. Thanks to the region’s moderate climate, you can cast a line into the Potomac’s tidal fisheries nearly year-round, as the river rarely ices over. The major forage includes shad and crawfish. Fish are found in shallow areas with water up to five feet deep, and you can catch

them with a variety of lures in grass, pads and old wooden barges. While you’re on the water waiting for fish to take the bait, enjoy the scenery along the river. History surrounds the Potomac with views of Mount Vernon, Fort Washington and the Nation’s Capital. Nature coexists as bald eagles take off within sight of Reagan National flight patterns. Whatever your favorite season or style of angling, the Potomac can provide memorable fishing experiences to enhance your visit to National Harbor.■

Celebrate the Cherry Blossoms at National Harbor Cherry blossoms are the most eagerly awaited sign of spring in the Washington metro area, and millions of visitors swarm the Tidal Basin when those delicate little buds pop open. But if you’re looking for a less crowded place to relish the pink petal splendor, come to National Harbor. Years ago, 100 cherry trees were planted along the walkways and throughout Gaylord National Resort. In 2019, National Harbor placed an additional 100 Okame cherry trees

18

National Harbor Marina

on the Harbor Trail. When the blossoms bloom in March, the rosy branches create a magical atmosphere and their fragrant aroma is lifted into the breeze. The cherry blossoms’ refection in the water brings a splash of pink highlights to the Potomac’s gentle waves. In a tribute to their exquisite colors, the Capital Wheel’s lights will shine in pink above the events for National Harbor’s Cherry Blossom Festival. It’s a sight you don’t want to miss. ■
