PORT PERSONALITIES

Matthew Giorgi

Molly Steen

Describe the first time you remember being on a boat.

What brought you to this marina?

General Manager Harbor East Marina

My first boating memory is on my grandparent’s skiff with my family on the Lemon Bay in Florida. My family and I spent the day fishing on the flats in the bay and ended the day swimming and relaxing on the shoal at Stump Pass.

I am originally from Kent Island, MD, and began working for Oasis Marinas at the Kent Narrows location. After college I wanted to advance in the company and gain more experience, which led me to becoming the Assistant General Manager at Harbor East Marina.

What brought you to this marina?

If you weren’t working at the marina, what job would suit you best?

I relocated from Cleveland, OH, to Harbor East Marina in Baltimore to join Oasis’ remarkable team and company. When I heard about Harbor East and the level of service expected at this marina along with everything they offer — including amenities, location and world-class service — I knew it would challenge me and allow me to grow professionally.

What is the most fun part of your work? I enjoy meeting people from Baltimore and all around the country. I also love seeing all the different types of vessels that pull into the marina and hearing what makes them special to each boater.

What is the number one attraction you would recommend for first-time visitors to Baltimore? Visitors must see Fort McHenry National Monument. Learning about the fort’s contribution to the War of 1812 is very interesting, and even if you are not into the history aspect of the fort, you can still enjoy the amazing waterfront views and perfect sunsets.

What’s the best safety tip you can give to a new boater? When docking, whether it be your first time or thousandth time, if you drive slowly problems happen slowly and allow more time to self-correct errors. But if you go fast, problems happen fast. We pride ourselves in our boaters’ safety and would much rather fall behind in our daily tasks and services from helping a safe boater than to be handling a crash or injury.

Describe the perfect meal. What would you eat and where would you be? Without a doubt, I’d want steamed blue crabs seasoned with Old Bay and finished with a freshly squeezed lemon. I would choose to eat this meal surrounded by friends or family, and we would be somewhere on the water of Maryland’s Eastern Shore at sunset.

What is your favorite part of the day at the marina? I most enjoy when I do “slip touches” and get to talk to all our boaters and learn more about their life and what brought them to Harbor East Marina.

Assistant General Manager Harbor East Marina

marinalife.com | HARBOR EAST MARINA

I recently graduated with my BA in criminal justice and will be completing my Masters in counterterrorism. So, I would pursue a career with either the FBI or Department of Homeland Security.

What is your favorite Baltimore attraction? The National Aquarium. I love animals and particularly sea life. It is really cool to be able to see such beautiful creatures up close.

Do you face challenges as a woman in the marina business? One of my biggest challenges is I have to do more to prove my professional merit. In this field, some people feel as though a woman doesn’t possess the knowledge of boating that men do.

What are the advantages of being a woman in this industry? I’m able to bring new ideas to the table and a different perspective on challenging situations. Being an outgoing woman allows me to connect with boaters emotionally and help make their experience more remarkable.

If you could walk in anyone’s shoes for a day, who would it be? Bindi Irwin. I grew up watching her father, Steve Irwin the conservationist, and I would love to make an impact in animal protection and education like she does.

What’s your favorite memory while working in the industry? When mega yacht ARIENCE docked at our marina. I had never seen a boat so big. It’s probably the prettiest vessel I’ve ever seen. The crew was also super friendly and taught me a lot about the mega yacht industry.

Who has been the biggest inspiration, advocate or mentor in your life? My dad has been my biggest inspiration and mentor. He is the one who got me into boating and fishing, which sparked my love for the water. HARBOR EAST MARINA

What’s Happening Around the Harbor? A Powerful Maritime Past Bolsters Preservation of Today’s Waterways By Alexa Zizzi

Lady Maryland

Lined with vibrant restaurants, trendy retailers, world-class museums and luxury high-rise apartments, Baltimore’s premier Harbor East neighborhood holds memories of a deep-rooted maritime legacy. Energized by diversity and dense population, its high-end establishments are located next door to 18th century pubs and mom-and-pop shops, giving Charm City a unique connection to its community. As a major port for shipbuilding and steamship transportation through the 18th and 19th centuries, Baltimore was built by working-class immigrants, sailors and seaman who paved the way for a booming economy. Canning companies, chandleries, railway, steel and manufacturing flourished in the southeast side of the city, which eventually faced a rough transition into the late 20th century when many of the old industries faded away or left town. Harbor East was left with desolate warehouses and decaying architecture. But by the 1980s, the city began rebuilding its infrastructure and created the thriving neighborhood we see today where visitors can easily dock their boats, wander the waterfront or hop on the water taxi to sightsee charming neighborhoods. Stroll along the promenade that connects Inner Harbor to the far east side of the water in Canton. Packed with family-fun attractions, the Inner Harbor delights kids of all ages with attractions such as the National Aquarium, 14

Maryland Science Center, Port Discovery Children’s Museum and USS Constellation. Just steps from the marina, walk the cobblestone streets of the historical (and some say haunted) Fells Point neighborhood, where redbrick row houses and old-school saloons look the same as they did centuries ago. Directly between Harbor East and Fells Point, Chase’s Wharf is home to the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park, a site dedicated to Baltimore’s diverse nautical past, Chesapeake Marine Railway and Dry Dock Company, the first African American-owned shipyard in the country. As a partner of Harbor East Marina, The Living Classrooms’ Maritime Education Program emphasizes applied learning — or as they call it — “learning by doing,” with shipboard land and sea programs that serve local students of diverse backgrounds and economic means. Here you can see the floating classrooms’ historic vessels including the pungy schooner Lady Maryland, skipjack Sigsbee and Chesapeake Bay buyboat Mildred Belle.

Food, Shopping & Culture Galore For upscale shopping and fine dining, step out front of the marina and follow the circle around the National Katyń Monument dedicated to Baltimore’s Polish-American community. High-end retailers on Aliceanna Street meet

Just steps away from Harbor East, head over to Little Italy for classic pasta dishes from family-owned restaurants in timeless 19th century row houses.

retro mom-and-pop shops intertwined along side streets, offering the best of both worlds to explore. Embrace authentic seafood by feasting on lump crab cakes, jumbo shrimp, fresh fish and raw bars from Harbor East’s Loch Bar in the Four Seasons Hotel and The Oceanaire Seafood Room, or Thames Street Oyster House a few blocks over in Fells Point.

For more history, museums and a mix of traditional and modern restaurants, several neighborhoods are a quick cab ride away. preserve the local waterways naturally. The Great Baltimore Oyster Partnership, a program between the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) and Waterfront Partnership, recruits volunteers to plant thousands of oysters in the Bay annually. Do you know that a single oyster filters up to 50 gallons of water per day?

On game days south of the harbor, you’ll see Ravens and Orioles fans fill the bars in Federal Hill, where you can sift through delectable food options from the newly redesigned Cross Street Market. Discover Baltimore’s Civil War past and catch the best view of the city atop Federal Hill Park.

Harbor East Marina is proud to host 20 oyster cages hanging from the docks. The staff works with CBF’s sponsors, such as the marina’s neighbor Legg Mason, to plant and care for the oysters. Volunteers come to hang spat cages in October and then do a monthly checkup to clean off algae or barnacles. In June, the oysters are sent off on the CBF’s boat to live a long life purifying the Bay. The organization plans to plant more than 500,000 oysters each year through local partnerships.

Cleaning the Bay One Oyster at a Time As a Certified Clean Marina, Harbor East Marina is dedicated to enriching the unique ecosystem in its urban oasis. The staff prides itself on community engagement by teaming up with local organizations such as the Living Classrooms Foundation, National Aquarium and Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore to keep the community connected to preserving the Chesapeake Bay.

Waterfront Partnership’s Healthy Harbor Initiative works closely with neighborhoods throughout the city to build sustainable communities, provide recycling bins, help clean alleyways and host free, low-cost events along the waterfront. Another successful program: the famous Mr. Trash Wheel, a 50-foot-long, googly-eyed mechanical wheel stationed at the mouth of Baltimore waterways absorbing tons of trash and debris that pollute the harbor.
