PORT PERSONALITIES

ANDREW RIINA GENERAL MANAGER Harbor East Marina, Baltimore MD

Andrew is a Baltimore native who grew up with a love for boating, thanks to his dad. He attended Annapolis Sailing Camp as a child and fell in love with powerboats during summer vacations to Maine. At age 19, he began working summers as a dockhand in Ocean City, MD, where he learned the ropes of the marina business. He found a home with Oasis in 2017 and managed Horn Point Harbor Marina in Annapolis, Point Lookout Marina in Ridge, MD and opened Tappan Zee Marina in Piermont, NY. He now resides at Harbor East Marina where he can be close to home. What makes Harbor East special or different than other marinas?

Harbor East Marina is the most active and exciting marina I’ve been around. Something fun is always going on whether it’s cruising clubs, boat shows, events, megayachts coming in — you name it. Most importantly, it’s all about the boaters. Being the “new guy” is not always easy, especially when I have large footsteps to fill (Sir Andy Lancos, who is now the regional manager). However, every boater has been so kind and welcoming, that you can tell how much they love this marina and want to celebrate how great it is here. What is your favorite place to visit by boat?

I am going to cheat and answer this with two places. First is Sunset Marina in Ocean City, MD, during the White Marlin Open. My boss and coworkers would take the parasail boat all the way down from North Ocean City to Sunset Marina and watch these amazing boats come in. The second is Sebago Lake, ME, where I learned how to waterski, wakeboard and drive a boat. Maine is a beautiful area and the water is like glass early in the morning — but just a little cold. Who is your biggest inspiration in life?

My dad. Not only did he introduce me to my biggest passion, but he has also given me some of the best guidance and advice. He works incredibly hard and encouraged me to pursue a career in the marina industry when all my friends were looking at finance jobs in New York.

Name the top three songs on your boating playlist:

Is This Love by Bob Marley. When boating in Maine, we would play a Bob Marley Greatest Hits CD on repeat. The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. Just a great song in general. Sabotage by The Beastie Boys. It gets the party going! Obviously, anything Jimmy Buffett too. What is one thing everyone should do or see when visiting Harbor East Marina or local area?

First and foremost — come say hi to me! I love to meet new people. Then, visit the restaurants in the area. The bars and restaurants in Harbor East are fantastic, and the views overlooking the water are top-notch. Then, walk over to the National Aquarium. It is a great place to go with the family, and I have fond memories of going there myself!

AROUND HARBOR

Baltimore’s historic Inner Harbor is making big waves in both the local community and global environmental movement

F

By Alexa Zizzi

rom joining sustainable initiatives to becoming a Certified Clean Marina, Harbor East Marina is dedicated to enriching the unique ecosystem right here in Baltimore’s backyard. Home to an urban oasis in the city’s prestigious waterfront neighborhood, the marina upholds a mission to engage the community, plus attract new visitors. The staff teamed up with Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore, a nonprofit organization committed to outreach through environmental programs that improve local waterways. Thanks to programs from Waterfront Partnership’s Healthy Harbor Initiative, the community is making history with groundbreaking projects.

Meet the Local Celebrity — Mr. Trash Wheel When Baltimore native John Kellet worked as a shipbuilder on the harbor, he was constantly disheartened from seeing trash flowing down the Jones Falls every day. As the 16 marinalife.com | HARBOR EAST MARINA

pollution crisis continued to grow, he invented an environmentally friendly machine to help combat the problem. He launched his company Clearwater Mills in 2007, created a giant waterway-powered trash interceptor, then connected with Waterfront Partnership in 2014 to fund the operation — and thus, Mr. Trash Wheel was born. You won’t catch the 50-foot-long, googly-eyed mechanical wheel cruising around the harbor picking up trash. Instead it’s stationed at the mouth of waterways and waits for trash to flow to it. The solar- and hydro-powered machine resembles a friendly, bug-eyed snail with a wheel under its “shell” collecting trash from rivers before it enters the Baltimore Harbor. The trash then goes to an incinerator and is burned, creating steam and electricity, which is then used for local heating systems. The electricity also goes right into the grid to power Maryland homes. Mr. Trash Wheel quickly became the talk of the town, as Baltimore was the very first city to pioneer this monumental invention. It has more than 30,000 social media followers, and his unique personality interacts with the community in

a fun and engaging way, especially with youth. Let’s just note that it is not easy to get kids passionate about cleaning up trash! Casey Merbler, project manager for Healthy Harbor Initiative, says Mr. Trash Wheel created its own community of people who care about water quality and pollution issues. “People feel so connected to Mr. Trash Wheel and his quirky personality that they even got tattoos of him on their bodies, dressed up as him for Halloween and we also created a secret society called The Order of the Wheel,” says Merbler. Mr. Trash Wheel has collected more than1,356 tons of trash and debris, and still counting. It is stationed to intercept the Jones Falls flow to the Inner Harbor, along with a few other garbage collectors across the city: Professor Trash Wheel in Canton, Captain Trash Wheel in Masonville Cove, and a newcomer for the Gwynns Falls area is in the works. “This is a really positive story for the city of Baltimore, because as of now trash wheels don’t exist outside of here. We’ve inspired people from around the world and get weekly inquires from different countries who want to install the technology,” says Merbler. “It kind of put Baltimore on the map in that conversation.”

Creating Life While Cleaning the Bay Do you know that a single oyster filters up to 50 gallons of water per day? The benefits that these industrious bivalves bring to the water’s cleanliness are remarkable. Not only do they naturally clean waterways and improve water quality,

oyster reefs also create habitats for other marine life. The Great Baltimore Oyster Partnership, a program between the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) and Waterfront Partnership, recruits volunteers to plant thousands of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay annually. They partner with local corporations to plant spats (baby oysters) in the fall, then frequently clean and measure growth over a nine-month period. In the spring, volunteers travel by boat to the Fort Carroll Oyster Sanctuary and pour the oysters into the Bay to flourish. Harbor East Marina is home to 20 cages hanging from the docks and works with CBF’s sponsors, such as the marina’s neighbor Legg Mason, to plant and care for the oysters. Volunteers come next door to the marina to hang spat cages in October and then do a monthly checkup to clean growing algae or barnacles. In June the oysters are sent off on the CBF’s boat to live a long life purifying the Bay. The project exceeded its goal by planting five million oysters by 2020 and plans to keep planting more than 500,000 oysters each year through local partnerships. Healthy Harbor Initiative works closely with neighborhoods upstream to build sustainable communities, provide recycling bins, help clean alleyways, host free and low-cost events along the waterfront, and even offer a Harbor Scholars Program for Baltimore students. Don’t miss its annual Baltimore Flotilla, a five-mile paddling event through the Inner Harbor where people deck out their boats and raise money for local education and environmental funding.
