CAREER DESCRIPTION As a Clinical Information Technician, also known as a Systems Analyst, you will help physicians in small medical practices to convert to EHR systems. There are opportunities in the area of hardware selection and installation, workflow design, software installation and training. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required. Jobs may have various levels of responsibilities. Examples include working with physicians to select and install computer hardware, assisting physician practices to re-design their workflow, assisting physicians to select and install EHR software

and assisting software vendors to improve and market their product.

HOW TO GET STARTED The Management of Clinical Information Technology is designed for those with experience working in a medical office or the information technology field. In some cases, those with other degrees and backgrounds may participate with the approval of the program director. GateWay Community College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Management of Clinical Information Technology and six Certificates of Completion in the following areas of specialization: Clinical Technology Consulting, Health Information Technology Implementation Support, Health Information Technology Training, Health Information Technology Technical Support, Implementation Management, Practice Workflow and Information Management Redesign.

Opportunities are available in non-profit organizations that work with physicians, hardware installation companies, EHR software vendors and physician practices. In Arizona, Clinical Information Technologists earn an average hourly wage of $35.04 for an average annual salary of $72,880. Actual salary depends on level of education and experience.

EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK Nearly 95% of primary care is delivered in practices with less than five physicians on staff. In Arizona, only 4-9% of the state primary care physicians are automated. Federal incentives and mandates are expected to motivate the Arizona primary care market to move to electronic health records over the next three years.
