NEWEST REUNION IDEA SPURRED BY CYBERSPACE – by Tim O’Hea ’63, Founding Four Committee Member Have you ever heard of a high school reunion that has gone on for 9 months 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? How about a reunion that you can attend in your pajamas? Well MCHS classes of 1962 and 1963 have just such a reunion currently in progress thanks to the wonderful world of email. It was all started in the late summer of 2007 by my good friend Ed Brown ’62 who had about 10 classmates, one of which was my wife Mary Ann (Ormsby) O'Hea ’62, on his personal email list. Ed's thought was to somehow generate interest in his class’ 50th reunion by updating Marian's list of their classmates with better or more current information. He obtained the list from the alumni office and then split it up among 8 classmates. He had them each try to contact, either by letter or email, everyone on their lists. He also used the website “peoplefinders.com” to locate classmates who were not on the list. What ultimately developed was a list of about 50 or 60 classmates who began to reconnect through their emails. There was a very strong group of about 10 or so who were from St. Joe’s in Homewood who began conversing on an almost daily basis and began to share photos and stories from their grade school and high school years. No one knows exactly how the idea of sharing their bios began, but I assume that when a new classmate joined the reunion someone asked what he or she had been doing since high school and they wrote back with a story of their life since graduation. Then it just exploded from there. When I saw how much fun Mary Ann was having, I decided to see if I could get my class of 1963 interested as well. The initial list of classmates’ emails that I started with was about 90. After my initial invitation to join this email reunion went out we had about 65 who were interested in participating. Some classmates didn’t want to participate or didn’t want their email accounts to get clogged and that was understandable, so we eliminated their names. What most people seem to like about this reunion is that they don't have to think about losing weight or buying new clothes to attend. I cannot possibly express the myriad of emotions that these bio’s have generated among the alumni in our 2 classes. They have run the gamut from hysterical to heartwarming to heartbreaking. One of the difficult things that we learned was that we (class of 1963) had lost 23 classmates from an original class of 190. Roy Carlson ’63 sent out an incredible tribute to a very close friend and classmate Denny Rehberg ’63 who passed away a few years ago. A few classmates in distant states have found that they live only a few miles from each other and didn't realize it. Others have shown a tremendous amount of courage while dealing with adversity. This has been a lot of fun and not nearly as much work as you might imagine. Once you have a pretty good list of your classmates and send out an initial invitation, it’s just a matter of getting everyone to “respond all” so that all on the list are included. Aside from the pleasure of reconnecting with high school friends, I think that the biggest benefit of this email reunion will be the quality of the time that we will spend together at the Founding Four Reunion on September 12 & 13. If this sounds like something that you might want to begin for your class, I recommend it highly. It will give you a chance to rekindle some friendships, maybe begin a few new ones, and make the next time that you all gather together much more meaningful. Cheers! The alumni office is committed to facilitate alumni contact and would welcome your call 708-755-6579 or alumni@marianchs.com. 7
