concept / (unknown) not known or familiar. (capabilities) the extent of someone's or something's ability. I do not attempt to provoke a deep philosophical discussion with my concept but to simply acknowledge what I now know I am capable of doing as not only a graphic designer and as an individual and furthermore to recognize that within me exists unknown capabilities yet to be revealed. To reflect on my journey in life so far is to observe the attempts, successes and failures along the way. With every new opportunity, with every new project, with every new day I discover what exactly I can and cannot do. Both ordinary and extraordinary challenges have helped to define my strengths and bring to light my weaknesses. This book documents some of my known capabilities, this book is also one of them.

problem / The objective of this project was to pick a publicly traded company and produce an annual report for the shareholders. The annual report should capture the culture of the company and its customers as well as provide factual information pertaining to the finances and structural organization.

solution / A.C. Moore is an arts and crafts retail store. The annual report was created to highlight the companies values, financial profile and to also serve as a reflection of the customer experience. The use of materials and methods of illustration were all chosen to further emphasize the hands-on arts and craft element of the A.C. Moore experience.

problem / The objective of this packaging project was to chose an existing fashion label and produce a candle line that not only exemplified the brand but also supported a social cause.

solution / United Colors of Benetton, specifically the Benetton Group, has always been synonymous with social cause and awareness, most notably through their magazine, Colors. This candle line was developed to promote and raise awareness of education for underprivileged youth. The use of custom mixed chalkboard paint with hand-drawn chalk patterns emphasizes the educational tone while remaining true to the brand aesthetic through the use of bright colors and geometric pattern. The candle line is meant to be interactive and participatory long after the candles have burnt out. The tea lights are mathematical, the large candles are erasable and the gift box gives you the tools to create, imagine and explore.

problem / The objective of this project was to create a 96+ page bound book based on the broad topic of survival. The book required the use of our own photography and illustrated informational graphics based on our chosen topic.

solution / When most think of defining survival they consider food and reproduction as two important factors, but for most, accomplishing those two factors requires massive movements. My chosen book topic was migration as survival, a movement of masses. This book directly interprets, through typography, layout, photography and informational graphics, precisely how this idea of migration looks visually. Extreme paragraph shifts, rule lines intersecting and overlapping sentences and photographs are all elements that were used to visually display a general concept of migration and movement throughout the book.

Surviving The Journey

99

Also in typical flock migrants, where migration routes are believed to be transferred from adults to juveniles by tradition, major parts of the migration program used nevertheless have a genetic component. Experiments have shown that young white storks (Ciconia ciconia, a flock migrant) that were delayed and displaced in autumn still migrated to their normal wintering area in Africa, including appropriate course shifts when flying around the eastern Mediterranean, and that they could compensate for displacements to some degree (Chernetsov et al. 2004). Recent experiments with long-distance migrating loggerhead sea turtles suggest that the behavioral responses resulting in course shifts during migrations are triggered by the combination of external geomagnetic parameters, including the field’s angle of inclination and intensity, typical for a particular geographic location (Lohmann et al. 2001). In songbirds, the angle of inclination of the geomagnetic field seems to be important to define the latitude, and thus to trigger the consecutive expected course shifts during migration (Wiltschko and Wiltschko 1995). Even if it uses an endogenous program, finding the way from its site of birth to its nonbreeding destination is not a trivial undertaking for a first-time migrant. How do birds solve this problem? Do we find strictly algorithmic strategies guiding them from the starting site to the exact location of the destination? Or do migrants apply some rule of thumb to approach the goal, during all or part of the route? Are there any ways we can find out? One way is to compare observed migration routes with those predicted by theoretical models. There are several alternative routes an animal could take: for example, the shortest route (great circle), fixed geographic or geomagnetic routes, and magnetoclinic routes (i.e., routes in which the Earth’s magnetic field has the same apparent angle of inclination.

problem / The objective of this project was to create a TED conference and build the collateral and identity that supported the conference. TED is a small nonprofit devoted to ideas worth spreading. It started out as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, and Design.

solution / TED conferences are infamous for revealing innovative thinking and igniting a general awareness on a broad variety of topics. For my conference I focused on the developing field of Neuroplasticity or in layman's terms, the ability to change your brain; thoughts, behaviors, etc. The brochure was created out of a filing folder, to emphasize the clinical and scientific topic of neuroplasticity. Vintage clip-art, vibrant colors and informational graphics help to make this seemingly inaccessible scientific topic more appealing and friendly to the general public. A series of posters were developed for the viewer to interact with by solving some brain teasers and the mailer piece takes the form of a customized Rubik's cube to further " Train Your Brain".

problem / The objective of this project was to create a fictitious company that had a green message and/or service at its core. Logo development, promotional brochures to contain the brand identity, as well as products and a system in which to house these materials, were all requirements of this project.

solution / Urban Dig was developed in response to my experience of city living and the lack of earth at my disposal for cultivation of a garden. With sustainability at the forefront of green discussion I developed a non-profit company to assist apartment dwellers, who have little to no access to land, in creating a sustainable, edible garden within their apartment. The logo is based on the concept of city living, crammed spaces and high rise buildings but leans towards a more organic shape to emphasize the green service of Urban Dig. Custom patterns and products were created as well as a plantable stationery system to strengthen the unique yet innovative company position.

problem / The objective of this project was to create three posters to promote pantone colors. Using only 3-4 pantone colors of our choice we were asked to create a series of posters that promoted pantone as a company as well as expressed the palettes.

solution / I started this assignment by first selecting the concept for the three posters. Finding things, objects, stories based on three was the first way I came to this solution. Posters based on well known child-hood fables, most notably that come to my mind are: the three little pigs, little red riding hood and goldilocks and the three bears. This project began with a sense of innocence that quickly took a down-turn after I discovered the true fables, not the Disney versions that I thought I knew. To emphasize this surprise of story I chose the most gruesome or deceptive moments to illustrate and express the palette.

problem / The objective of this project was to chose an existing restaurant and create a brand extension in either grocery, coffee shop or take-out services. The extension would translate across multiple packaged items and would reinvigorate the current brand identity and create a new market for products and services for the restaurant.

solution / Dopo is a full-service Italian restaurant located in Oakland, CA. Chef-owner Jon Smulewitz and his staff create each day’s menu using fresh fish and seasonal vegetables to celebrate regional Italian cooking and then add lesserknown, seasonally driven dishes to the mix. I developed a sub-brand grocery store product line, Dopo Cucina, that is infused with the fresh, unique experience of restaurant dining but for use at home this includes, prepackaged pasta, seasonings, flour, oil and cookies. This upscale product line functions in the modern kitchen yet conveys a sense of traditional and regional Italian personality into the everyday. The design aesthetic is a marriage of simple and clean design infused with a sense of Italian tradition through the use of hand-drawn patterns and a color coded labeling system.

problem / The objective of this project was to first come up with an innovative, ecofriendly and wildly radical earth-changing product. This product would then require a brand identity system, including a unique name, logo, brochure and stationery system. Finally, to promote the innovative product an event would be held, sponsored by French Paper Company, to invite consumers to become more familiar with this new invention.

solution / Omission is a company that produces filters that you attach to your car's exhaust which then works to eliminate any harmful chemicals from being emitted into the atmosphere. To promote this product a go-kart event called the, White Knuckle Race, was held to demonstrate just how this product functions as it was attached to all the go-kart exhausts. The invitation cover surface is tactile and reminiscent of road pavement with a yellow divider line. The inside has a retro and nostalgic feel by use of patterns, collage elements and clip-art to add a playful and humorous quality to this very serious environmental issue. The promotional poster is a call to "Burn Some Rubber" as a reminder to potential consumers of the product and attendees of the go-kart event. Guests receive a car air freshener in the form of two paper dice as a take-away piece.

This project represents the branding and identity system of the Omission product/company. First, the name omission was created as a play on the very function of the product as it eliminates or omits any harmful emissions from your car. The logo developed is a nod to the scientific aspect of this new invention and shows a molecular representation within the logo-type. The stationery system utilizes a modern layout with die-cut elements within the logo to highlight the molecular form. The brochure was developed to be visually similar to car repair invoices and utilizes a file folder to contain all the information about the company in an organized manner. Carbon copies and hand-drawn illustrations add a more approachable and friendly voice to a very scientifically driven product.

thank you / I will not try to list the longer-than-this-book list of people that I should thank but here are a few that should definitely be in print: To Mary Scott and Hunter Wimmer who have provided me with invaluable knowledge and inspiring support. To every single one of my instructors at the Academy who have taught me to see and pushed me to discover what I am now capable of. To my friends, old and new, it is the coffee breaks, the phone calls and the packages in the mail that keep me going. To Dusty, who endured year after year, semester after semester with such unwavering, and at times unbelievable, love and support. Finally, to my family (Mom, Dad, Michael, Grandma and Grandpa Janosko, Grandma and Grandpa Palanti) in which I find it extremely difficult to come up with the right words to express how grateful I am to have you in my life. There is no doubt that I would not have achieved all that I have in life without your love and support. I swear though, I'm done with school.
