Central idea of the design Central idea for this garden was the creation of raised beds. Raised beds lend themselves to the development of complex agricultural systems that utilize many of the principles of permaculture. In this case the purpose of the raised beds was two-fold: – – to upgrade the quality and drainage of the existing soil, as well as to conserve water and nutrients and recycle them; and also – – to improve the garden's appearance, usability and accessibility. The material used for the construction of the raised beds was the weathering steel, known as COR-TEN. Corten was selected for its structural strength, for the short time of installation, its life span and of course for its aesthetic values. Its warm hue and provides a superb backdrop against which to see the natural colors of leaves, flowers and soil. It also blends in harmoniously with the dry stone retaining walls surrounding the garden.

Tasks managed during the project •• Detailed study-measurements on site •• Detailed concept design and constructural design for the suppliers •• Market research and determination of the suppliers • • Coordination and supervision of excavation works, groundworks and corten installation

A simple steel structure with a brick base was proposed, for the needs of plants propagation, as well as vegetable growing, matching owner’s requirements. The interior was divided in 3 parts, as it was specified by agriculturist consultants, in order to better control the thermal & moisture conditions. Different pupose was intended for each of these parts — seedling growing, cultivation as well as a resting area.

WINE PROC ESSIN G UNIT

WINE STORAGE TOWER

WINE DEGUSTATION AREA

This small scale winery was developed within the scope of a larger project on a greek island that included the developm ent of infrastructure for the complete food growing & processing cycle. The winery plan was structured around an existing old stone tower, that would serve as wine storage area. Two rectangular structures were attached to it, serving as processing unit and a degustation area.  17

The primary material selected for the landscaping was stone, for the economy of the construction — as the material was in abundance on site — and for the aesthetic qualities it possesses — it's earthy appearance minimizes the visual impact and blends harmoniously with the natural environment. Wood was the complementary material proposed for its flexibility and easy installation. Concrete was limited to foundations. To retain the permeability, the path was proposed to be constructed with dry stone, a technique used traditionally in greek rural settlements.

18

The proposed landscape design was prepared within the project "Technical

Assistance for the Implementation of a phil-eco-culture approach”   for the purpose of rehabilitating an existing farm area, and making it accessible to visitors. To preserve the natural environment minimum interventions were proposed, including a central path for visitors, as well as fencing & infrastructure essential for the animal breeding. The development of the general landscaping design included on-site measurements,

INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT OF URBAN WATERCOURSES & STORMWATER RUNOFF TYPE: ACADEMIC | THESIS PROJECT CONTRIBUTOR: MARIA HATZIYANNI YEAR: 2016

24

This thesis constitutes a systematic research in order to create a methodology, including a set of tools, that can comprise a strategy for integrated management of urban watercources and stormwater runoff. The management of these issues is mainly addressed towards three priorities. Firstly, to mitigate the flood phenomena. Secondly, to improve living conditions for the citizens. Last but not the least, to upscale the overall condition of natural landscape and to enhance the biodiversity and therefore, the urban resilience to climate change. For full review of the thesis paper and its presentation, please go to the following links: https://issuu.com/mariahatziyanni/docs/m__________________________________ https://goo.gl/photos/iJgA241kuZvjSpvKA

The strategic interventions suggested in this project concern, on one hand, the restoration of the riparian ecosystem and the determination of buffer zones and flood detention basins in areas suitable for this purpose. On the other hand, decentralized actions of increasing the permeability of the urban landscape are suggested, with the use of sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS). Consequently, the proposed strategy integrates interventions related both to the urban waterways and the urban built environment, in order to achieve the desired goals.

PUBLIC LIBRARY/ CULTURAL AND LEARNING SUPPORT CENTER IN ANO KIPSELI, ATHENS TYPE: ACADEMIC PROJECT CONTRIBUTORS: MARIA HATZIYANNI NEFELI LAGOUDAKI YEAR: 2012

This enclosed concrete construction hosts the library and the community center. The concrete outer walls are complemented by a steel framework that supports the inner floors as well as the curved roof. A significant feature of this project is a circular stairway defined by a conical concrete structure. Inspired by the J. L. Borges's description of a book as a world and a labyrinth that encloses enigmas, the motion inside this conical tower directed by the light above has an experiential purpose; the movement towards center and the discovery of the inner knowledge.

The aim of this project was to reinforce the usability of the Varvakios square that functions as an open market. This is achieved by the design of a wooden pergola that shelters the pedestrian route and defines the space for the retail sellers to display their products. The center is left open and is complemented with urban furniture, trees and various low-maintenance plants, as well as landscape water features.
