FromthePresident’sPen

I am honored, humbled, and excited to be President of the Southwestern Region of the American Choral DirectorsAssociation.

At SWACDA in Little Rock (2022), I was sitting at a table with several people I knew and a few I didn’t know. I was introduced as President-elect designate to a young director who I had seen before but had never had the opportunity to meet him. As we sat at the round table, the young director leaned over to a friend beside him and said, “Why would SWACDA want a retired person to be president”? I’m sure it was not his intention for me to hear the comment, but there could beotherswhofeelsimilarly.Iamthefirstretiredchoral directortoleadtheSouthwesternRegion.

Now, many of you reading this know nothing about me. You may have questions or it may not matter to you. Were my choirs the best in the world? Am I the best choral conductor you ’ ve ever seen? Am I the smartestpersonwhowasevercreated?Theanswersto these questions are: No, Nope, Far from it But I care aboutchoralmusic.Icareaboutchoralconductors, and I am surrounding myself with people much smarter than I am to ensure that the members of SWACDA haveopportunitiesforconnectionandgrowth.

Instead of the question, “Why would SWACDA want someone who is retired?”, I think my question would be “Why wouldn’t SWACDA want a person who is retiredtolead?”Ihavetime.WhileIdohaveacouple of part-time retirement jobs, being in leadership for SWACDA is now another important part-time job. I takeitveryseriouslyandwillworktodothebestjob thatIcan.I’mfarfromperfectandIknowthattheold saying “You can’t please everyone ” is very true, but I hopetomakeadifference
