Repairing and Restoring Wood Damage

Fine workmanship is appreciated for generations. A handmade spiral staircase, glowing pine floors, and your grandfather’s desk evoke memories and pride of ownership. However, when water is left on the surface, beautiful wood suffers both visibly and structurally. When repairing water damaged hardwood floors, wood cabinets and fine furniture, make sure the cause of the moisture is fixed. Then check out these expert tips for repairing and restoring:

DIY Tips for Small Areas MA restoration’s renowned cabinet maker and wood restorer offer these three tips for small, DIY projects: 1) Naturally, Restore Wood Before grabbing a store-bought wood stain, try a natural ingredient. Coconut oil not only rehydrates your wood, but also restores your wood’s natural color and soft glow. It may appear to “stain” the wood darker, but it’s actually a restoration of the healthier, natural color. And it’s much friendlier to the environment. 2) Naturally Stain & Darken To stain the wood a darker, yet more natural color, give vinegar a try. You can use either balsamic vinegar or apple cider vinegar, depending on the color you prefer. If you scrub the vinegar in with a wire brush, it will darken even more. 3) Repair Minor Nicks & Scratches To repair fairly minor damage, combine the natural recipes. Appy ¾ cup of oil and ¼ cup of white or apple cider vinegar, wait, then wipe off. Your wood pieces will look great in no time and little cost.

Repairing Hardwood Floors As for your expensive floor, you need to determine the reason for the damage. Any repairs to the floor will be worthless if water continues to seep in; be sure the original problem has been solved. Then, if there are large gaps in the floor or the boards have begun to warp, you will need to remove and replace the affected areas. If the boards are structurally sound, and the boards smooth to remove any discoloration. They may need to be stained two or three times to get the desired look and color. Remember each coat of stain must dry before the next coat can go on. Once the desired stain look is achieved, coat the spot with a sealer to protect from wear and tear.

Although there are steps you can take to try to remedy problems with wood floors, it is NEVER a good idea to do it yourself without consulting a professional who will know what will and what will not cause more damage to your expensive floors.
