Nudist club gets heart-racing news By Boyd Robertson Emergency medical equipment donated by Tablelands Regional Council will get the blood pumping at a naturist club in Koah. The Barrier Reef Sun Club will be able to purchase an automated external defibrillator (AED) after successfully applying for a $1530 grant from council.
The not-for-profit club is putting up $500 for the total $2030 cost of the device, which automatically determines the patient’s heartbeat before delivering an electric charge to stabilize the organ’s rhythm. Most of the club’s 80 members are over 60 years old and the closest ambulance is up to 20 minutes away. The AED can be operated by someone with next to no training. The club will also pay
for the ongoing maintenance costs of the device. The club’s president told The Express the club was “pleased” to successfully obtain the grant, but declined to be named after previous contact with the media resulted in “puerile and titillating stories” that painted an inaccurate picture of the club. “The club’s just a place to provide a venue for naturists in the area to enjoy the lifestyle,” he said. “We could be a garden club or a bridge club – we

just happen to enjoy what we’re doing with no clothes on. There’s no sex or drugs but we do rock and roll.” The president said there were many unjustified public misconceptions surrounding the club. “We’ve been incorporated for 20 years and we’ve been on the Tableland for 15 years. I’d challenge anyone to provide evidence of misbehaviour linked to the name of the Barrier Reef Sun Club.”
