the public arena that might take advantage of the use of these venues. The Art Society welcomes any inquiries. Mary Lewendon Mareeba Arts Society
No support for arts community As stated in the papers recently, Mareeba Art Society stepped into its second half century with its annual art show. Thanks to the artists that exhibited their works and the small but willing band of members and helpers that ensured that everything went well. The art works were down in number, but of a good standard. Public attendance was also down this year. This is probably due to a growing trend in both public and official apathy to events run by local communities, especially the arts. It was very disappointing to note that none of our local councillors, politicians or press saw fit to attend the opening or closing nights. This is a once a year event, and as stated, has been for more than 50 years, it would be good to see representatives of the community attend. The Mareeba Arts Society has worked hard over many years to give Mareeba it’s only artistic outlet. It is very sad to see that so few people take advantage of this long running group. Many in the community may not realise that, over the years, not only have the group run the annual art show, which it might be added, has helped many talented artist to go on to bigger and better things but it has also managed to raise funds to build not one but two buildings. The largest of these buildings is used to display and sell locally made arts and crafts. Alongside the shop is the newly opened “Gallery 58”. This gallery is for use by artists and craftspersons to hold exhibition of their works. It is free for them to exhibit. The second building is for use as a workshop. This is also available for anyone that might wish to run any form of art or craft classes. It is hoped that there are people out in
Tremendous performance On Sunday afternoon, August 4, I was lucky enough to attend a most wonderful orchestral music performance, all for the cost of a gold coin donation. The musicians, and I use that term deliberately, were all from Years 6 to 9, and attended a wide variety of state, catholic and independent schools from the Cairns and Tableland region. These young musicians had participated in a whole weekend of workshops that covered woodwind, brass, percussion and strings, at St Mary’s College in Cairns. Personnel from the Griffiths University’s Conservatory of Music ran the program which is called the, “State Honours Ensemble Program”, and has been going for 10 years. To be in the audience and witness the talent of these young people was indeed a privilege. The high achievers in our schools, like these, need to be supported and encouraged. Unfortunately, with the current emphasis on a narrow curriculum which is “tested” to extremes, and must appear absolutely boring to students with any amount of creativity, these wonderfully talented kids will probably not even be acknowledged at their respective schools tomorrow. I can personally verify that there are musical instruments growing mould in storerooms in some Queensland Schools, and this is simply because Music, the Arts, Languages Other Than English and Physical Education are all being neglected : the whole emphasis is on NAPLAN, the results of which decide the funding given to schools.
