Roads earmarked for ugrade in Atherton and Malanda By Katherine Kokkonen TABLELANDS Regional Council (TRC) has earmarked roads in Malanda and Atherton for upgrades after forecasts the bitumen reseal and asphalt overlay programs will come in under budget. TRC debated the inclusion of roads on the Supplemental 2014/15 bitumen reseal and asphalt overlay program at their meeting on Thursday. TRC had approved the 2014/15 annual bitumen reseal and annual asphalt overlay programs at the May 1 meeting and works on the programs have already commenced. General Manager Infrastructure Services Ross McKim explained to council that there was the “potential that money will be left over after work completed” and the officer recommended undertaking additional works “until the annual bitumen reseal budget and asphalt overlay program budget are spent”. Councillor Shaaron Linwood questioned Mr McKim over the inclusion of particular roads and how they rated with
the council prioritisation tool, especially when compared to other roads, such as Glen Allyn Road, which had been left off the supplemental program. He responded that Memorial Drive had been brought to council officers’ attention due to its “dreadful condition” after which the officers determined it was a council responsibility, while Mary Street was a request from a councillor. Mr McKim added that the included roads had higher traffic volume which was taken into consideration and that projects that were currently deferred would be considered as priority projects in the future. “So long as another councillor doesn’t come in with their pet project,” Cr Linwood quipped. The Supplemental 2014/15 bitumen reseal asphalt overlay program was carried with the votes of Mayor Rosa Lee Long and Councillors Geoff Stocker, Peter Hodge and Rod Marti. Cr Linwood did not vote for the program and Cr Marjorie Pagani was absent.
